15 Demo Worthy Blu-ray Scenes to show off your Surround Sound System

As home theater enthusiasts we love to show off our home entertainment systems. Let’s face it we have put lots of blood, sweat, tears and money into our labor of love so why shouldn’t we sit our friends, neighbors, relatives and anyone else that happens by down for a demonstration? Like many of you reading this I still get a kick out of watching people react to a great demo scene played back in my 7.2 channel theater. Of course this type of setup isn’t required to derive the awe factor as each room, system and enthusiast is different. The advent of surround sound gave... read more

5 Best Wireless Routers For Your Money

By Eric Podolsky, 9/10/12   As we collectively hurtle into the brave, new world of streaming, our ever-increasing bandwidth demands present us with constant challenges. The amount of data we stream continues to increase exponentially, and the routers we use to transmit said data are becoming obsolete faster than ever before. Thanks to a growing pool of streaming HD entertainment and games, the typical 300 Mbps wireless router just isn’t going to hold up to demands pressed upon it.   Naturally, as our hardware becomes increasingly unable to handle the... read more

AVS Forum's Top 9 LCD TVs

LCD TVs have taken over the flat-panel market big time. For one thing, they are much brighter than plasmas, which means they catch shoppers' attention much better in the store. They can be made ultra thin with LED illumination, which also offers the added benefit of being much "greener" for the environment than the old fluorescent backlighting. In fact, virtually all LCD TVs these days use LED illumination in one of two configurations—LEDs placed around the edges of the screen (edgelighting) or in an array directly behind the screen (full-array backlighting).   [Jump... read more

Top Blu-rays for 2013

It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2013. When I began thinking about assembling this list there weren’t as many titles coming to the forefront of my mind as I’d hoped. Once I began going over this year’s reviews I didn’t have any problem coming up with 25 titles that either look, sound or look and sound great making them worthy additions to the collections of enthusiasts. While the year isn’t quite over I wanted to post this article prior to the beginning of the holiday shopping season. I have included remarks from my review of each along with a link to... read more

AVS Guide to Media Servers, Part 1

If you're like me, you've collected hundreds—if not thousands—of shiny silver discs in various formats, including Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. Not only that, you might also be downloading and/or streaming audio and video content from the Internet. Having access to so much content is great, but it's also confusing, with multiple source devices connected to multiple inputs on your AV receiver or preamp/processor—not to mention finding what you want in a library of discs, downloaded files stored on various computers, and streaming content.   One solution to this... read more

AVS Forum's Top 6 Streaming Media Players

Physical media such as Blu-ray and CD face serious challenges, due in large part to the proliferation of online media streaming. Of course, content streamed from online sources is typically not the best possible quality because it must be highly compressed to flow without interruption through the limited bandwidth available to most consumers. But no one can deny that streaming content is more convenient than physical media, and it's available on many different devices in the home and on the go.   In fact, many (if not most) TVs and Blu-ray players—as well as game... read more

Sony Launches 4k Ultra HD Flat Panel - AVS Coverage at the Event

Last night, Sony launched its much-anticipated 4K Ultra HD flat panel at a gala event held at a palatial private residence known as the House of Rock, located in the high-end Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. The 84-inch XBR-84X900 (seen here with the lovely Allison Holmes of Sony's Cierge customer-service group) is now available to well-heeled consumers at a list price of $25,000—but don't expect any holiday-shopping discounts, at least not this year! Sony is using the term "4K Ultra HD" to distinguish the pixel resolution of this flat panel... read more

Cutting The Cord Part II: Best Streaming Devices

By Eric Podolsky, 8/14/12   For those looking to free themselves from the shackles of the all-powerful cable company, there are plenty of hardware options that will help you declare your independence and still get all the content you need from your TV. The world of streaming video has expanded dramatically in the past year, and though the picture quality of streaming video is still not quite up to speed with cable, the money saved through reliance on these services makes a strong argument for switching over. We know that the amount of streaming boxes on... read more

AVS Forum's Top 8 Low-Cost Surround-Speaker Packages

When it comes to surround-speaker packages, there is no shortage of great ones out there—SoundandVision.com lists over 50 in its Top Picks! And they range in price from several hundred to tens of thousands of dollars. So to keep this buying guide manageable, I've decided to limit it to surround systems with an MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) no more than $2500. I realize that $2500 is hardly "low cost" for many people, but there are several systems far below that in this guide—and believe me, even $2500 is low cost compared with the top end of the speaker... read more
