View Full Version : Rockband vs. Guitar Hero III - Which one to get?
y2k02c5 02-26-08, 10:41 AM So i'm interested in getting one of these games, but have never played either. I realize rock band is multi player with the different instruments, vs GH only having a guitar.
for those of you that have played both, or perhaps own both, which one do you find the most replay value on?
Is Rock Band a hassle to setup? Or is it pretty straightforward? What is the quality of the indvidual instruments themselves?
Thanks for your input
number1laing 02-26-08, 10:43 AM Rock Band by a mile.. unless you only want to play the fake guitar. Then GH3 is probably better. Problem with that is, Rock Band's drums are great.
WalksInDarkness 02-26-08, 10:54 AM ROCK BAND! ROCK BAND!! ROCK BAND!!!
I have all of the GH games, and Rock Band blows them away. Rock Band gives you the choice of 4 different "instruments", GH only gives you Guitar and Bass. Also, GH is very limited in it's DLC so you have to buy more $50 discs; whereas RB you buy one disc, and download the rest. The only upside to GH is there is a slightly more "hip" selection of songs (RB can be a little bit "top 40" at times...).
GrooveRite 02-26-08, 10:56 AM Rock Band in a land slide!!
FIVE ONE SIX 02-26-08, 11:01 AM GH2 is still one of my top 5 favorite games, and i've played RB on my friends 360 and didn't like it. either of the GH guitars are DEFINITELY better than the RB one, and anyone that tells you differently never played GH. i would agree with everyone else and say RB, but the guitar is made too cheap for my taste, but that's just my opinion...
bottom line, pick up both RB and one of the Guitar Hero's, because you're going to need a 2nd guitar for bass in RB anyway. also, you can use a GH guitar with RB but you can't use the RB guitar with a GH, just to let you know...
WalksInDarkness 02-26-08, 11:10 AM GH2 is still one of my top 5 favorite games, and i've played RB on my friends 360 and didn't like it. the either GH guitar is DEFINITELY better than the RB one, and anyone that tells you differently never played GH...
Curious, me and all my buddies have both GH & RB setups; and we ALL prefer the RB guitar. The reason is that we are all Real guitar players (I am formally trained in jazz in classical), and to us the GH guitar feels like a tiny boxy cheesy kids toy. The RB strat has a more realistic shape and size and feel, and the strum bar has a more lifelike sense of string kickback (espescially for Bass plucking). The only downside to the RB guitar is that it's durability is clearly not nearly as good as the GH ones; but all that being said, my buddy already broke both of his GH ones, but the RB one is still going strong...
Rockband b/c of the drums...so much fun, multiplayer or not. And certainly strong download content support is a major + with at least 3 songs each week for the forseeable future!!!
Sunkist 02-26-08, 11:15 AM GH2 is still one of my top 5 favorite games, and i've played RB on my friends 360 and didn't like it. the either GH guitar is DEFINITELY better than the RB one, and anyone that tells you differently never played GH...
as far as GH goes, 2 is more punk and 3 is more rock, so get the one for whichever music you like better...
bottom line, pick up GH (GH2 if you want a guitar with a cord, or GH3 if you want the cordless guitar so you can walk around your room) and RB, and use the GH2 guitar with RB. you can use a GH guitar with RB, but you can't use the RB guitar with GH, and if you're really into it you're going to need a 2nd guitar anyway for bass...
I also have every GH and recently bought RB and I prefer RBs guitar myself. In fact we got GH3 just for the extra guitar for RB and have not even opened up the plastic wrapper for GH3 yet (although we have played the game before). RB is fun with a group of people, I have not played it alone yet and would rather not, gotta play with my whole band! If I wanted to play alone I would just pick up GH unless I really wanted to get some drum practice in (actually haven't even touched them yet).
the red worm 02-26-08, 11:26 AM I agree with five one six about the instruments, I'd buy a gh2 bundle cheap and get the rockband bundle.
I like RB a lot more than gh but I still like the gh2 guitar best.
I would have to say guitar hero 3, but this is mainly because i didn't find the drums on rockband any fun, i beat the whole game with my friends. I played guitar the whole time, its more enjoyable to me. Plus i thought a lot of the songs on rockband were very bad.
Start with Rock Band and then pickup GH2, GH3, GH:Aerosmith at your convenience.
People who limit themselves to only one game in this genre need to get a second paper route... ;)
RafaelSmith 02-26-08, 11:47 AM Curious, me and all my buddies have both GH & RB setups; and we ALL prefer the RB guitar. I much prefer the RB guitar over the GH ones. I am no guitarist or musician but when I play with the RB guitar I actually feel like I am holding a real guitar...while the GH guitar feels like a toy. Silly I know but it probably means something. The GH guitars may actually be better "game controllers" for the game...which would mean something for people that play less for fun and more for getting those high scores, 5-stars etc. But for me I play for fun...and to pretend I am in a Rockband =P
As for the original question in this thread....Rockband would be my suggestion. Its ALOT of fun for not just you but for friends...I have even gotten non-gamer friends of mine hooked.
I do not own GH3...but have played it. Honestly I would probably pick up a copy if I could play it with my RB guitar...it has some songs I would love playing.
properbostonian 02-26-08, 11:48 AM I agree with Groove. Rockband in a landslide. No contest whatsoever.
You play guitar, bass, drums, and sing. Hello?!?!? Doesn't everyone at one point dream of being in a band?
Unless you have a LAN set up with multiple TV's and Xboxes, Rockband is the ultimate local multiplayer game.
Even if you don't have friends :) and you cannot form a rock band, you can still do the solo tour with all three instruments and singing.
The Sapient 02-26-08, 12:02 PM I've got GH2, GH3 and RB. All of them are worth the asking price, but RB is the one I generally turn to. I have a slight preference for the RB guitar, but it is the other features of RB that keep me coming back. Aside from the drums and the mike and the ability to play as a band, I think the little extras make the game far more entertaining. I like that I can still build up "star power" while star power is active. I like the way I was able to really customize the look of my characters. I like that errors in my play are audibly noticeable without making the songs sound like crap. It's just a more refined game design. I also enjoy the more mainstream song lists over the guitar wankery of the GH series.

I've been playing rhythm games for a long time and have owned
Frequency
Amplitude
Gitaroo man
Guitar freaks
Drummania
DDR
Beatmania
GH1, 2, 80's and 3
Rock band
GH3, beatmania, and Guitar freaks being the worst.
My RB guitar has lasted much long than my GH3 one and IMO it fits the guitar sections of the songs much better. I love having the solo buttons available(I play on those most of the time now). The only time I play GH3 is at my local bar during tournements.
Andrew_B 02-26-08, 01:29 PM I agree with most of the other posters. Rock Band, and it's not even close.
KLUNKDM 02-26-08, 01:39 PM GH3 was my first game and I loved it, but once I got RB then it was all over. I haven't played GH3 in forever and I can't get enough of RB. Love the DL songs each week and being a guitarist, I like the RB guitar better. Drums are a blast and I even have fun singing.
FrankJ.Cone 02-26-08, 01:54 PM Rock band. If I was to suggest a GH game it would be II not III.
WalksInDarkness 02-26-08, 02:05 PM Rock band. If I was to suggest a GH game it would be II not III.
Agreed. After playing through all of the GH discs I still occasionally play GHII, but I only play GHIII for one song "Raining Blood" (metal is forever...).

I like raining blood but hate GH3's exaggerated note chart so instead I go back and play Cowboys from hell on GH1.
DerekinMerrick 02-26-08, 02:45 PM I dont like all the wires on RB thats my complaint I will get the second one when it comes out wireless
RafaelSmith 02-26-08, 03:04 PM I dont like all the wires on RB thats my complaint I will get the second one when it comes out wireless
My friend has GH3 and he told me he would rather have to deal with running a USB cable to the back of the room than having to swap out or recharge batteries every 10 songs.
Ive noticed there will be a standalone wireless RB guitar soon..wonder if they will also make the wired one available standalone?...I would like to get a 2nd one...but would prefer to skip the wireless crap.
With a game like RB that is so picky about AV/input lag...last thing i need is low batteries adding more issues.
Ive got a rather nice setup atm...I have a long USB cable running from the back of my 360 under the carpet to the back of the room where the sofa is...USB hub mounted along the wall where I plug the RB instruments in...works great...and people that have come over like the setup.

I have 2 of the wireless GHIII guitars and I'm amazed at how long the batteries last. I got the game at Christmas, and I've only replaced the batteries once.
Perhaps he should buy some better batteries? :)
I also don't get why people like GHII better. GHII has so many more covers than GHIII does. And some of them are REALLY bad. Like, unlistenably (yes, I made up that word) bad.
WalksInDarkness 02-26-08, 03:15 PM I like raining blood but hate GH3's exaggerated note chart so instead I go back and play Cowboys from hell on GH1.
Hmm, maybe that is why I can't get past medium on Raining Blood. I used to be able to play several parts on a real guitar, but that was back in 1986 when I was 18... Oh yes, and I occasionally do like to go back to GHIII for "Before I Forget" also, that rocks too.
yamahaSHO 02-26-08, 03:16 PM I've had GH3 for about a month or more and I'm still on the original batteries. The only thing I would like better is if the Guitar would accept the Xbox controller battery pack as I have the rechargeable batteries. I used to hate the days of Nintendo, Sega, PS1/2 when I had to have the cables strung across the floor, so I LOVE wireless controllers.
I was one of those people who originally made fun of the people that played the GH games... Then one night while a bunch of us went snowboarding for the weekend, someone brought their Wii to the condo and with a little bit of alcohol, I started playing GH3. I had a blast and the day I got back home, I went and purchased the game for my Xbox. The fiance and I were trying to decide if we wanted GH3 for $100 or RB for $170(?). NOW, we are considering buying RB for the replay value of multiple instruments. I hear the guitar I already have will work for RB, so we'll have two to battle with.
If you really like these type of games, I would suggest RB as you get quite a bit for your money.
RafaelSmith 02-26-08, 03:49 PM If only Activision would get off their high horse and patch GH3 so it could be played with the RB guitar...I would run out and buy GH3 game today.
Ive tried like 10 times to play using my friends GH3 guitar...and its just uncomfortable for me. Not sure why...he seems to like it.
TimBob5259 02-26-08, 03:49 PM I've been wondering about these two games as well. I have never played any games like them, and have no idea if they are even something I would enjoy (not a huge music fan). Also, don't know anyone who has either so no way of trying it out. But, for some reason I just feel the need to try it out and see what all the buzz is about.
I ended up ordering the GHIII bundle from yourfree360games last friday. So, it'll be two firsts for me. Trying out one of those free websites and if that works, trying out a new game genre. Worst case scenario: I paid 9.99 for a one month blockbuster membership.

Curious to see how it works out for you. I have been tempted to try those offers but something in the back of my mind has always stopped me from doing so.
Whats the earliest you can cancel the Blockbuster offer and still get credit for the offer?
TimBob5259 02-26-08, 04:21 PM I had to sign up for two offers. I chose stamps.com which was free for the first month. I have to hold it for 21 days. If I don't cancel by the 28th day I'll get charged for the next month ($15).
I'm not sure how long I have to keep the blockbuster one, but I just replaced my netflix subscription with blockbuster so it doesn't really matter to me. I think it said I just needed to register and queue a movie.
Supposedly they ship within 2 weeks, but we'll see. I assume if I cancel something before the required time, they wont allow me to use their service anymore. I'm a bit skeptical, but I've read positive stuff about the particular company running the offers so thought I'd give it a try.
twinkletowz 02-26-08, 05:05 PM i would say RB as well... but beware if buying for the PS3... the GH guitars are not yet compatible. in fact there are no other guitars that are compatible with the PS3 version... 360 is fine though, and I believe PS2 is fairly compatible.
I love Rock band because I can play it with my kids... everyone can play at individual levels of difficulty. I have had the game for about a month now... only replaced the batteries in the wireless guitar once (probably 10-15hrs of play). Sadly I have to RMA my guitar as it decided to die. however this process is very simple and Harmonix seems to good with customer service. (they are sending me a new guitar with packaging to sent my broken one back to them no charge!!) yes there are issues with the instruments... but they are being handled incredibly well IMHO.
some great info can be found here (http://www.rockband.com/forums/) and here (http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/)
I've owned: GH1, GH2, GH:80's, GH3 (all for PS2) and Rock Band for the 360
I think Rock Band is the most engrossing game out of all of them so far.
GH1 still probably has the most hours put onto it, but that's mainly because I haven't had RB for as long. I still think GH1 might have the best set list out of all of them, but the interface wasn't as polished as it became in GH2 (after which I don't think it has changed that much).
The only reason to get GH2 or GH3 over Rock Band is if you want to challenge yourself on the guitar parts. GH2 and later has a much easier Medium track than GH1 but much harder Hard/Expert tracks. Rock Band has a medium track that is comparable to GH2, but Hard/Expert that is comparable to GH1 so it's easier all around on guitar. It is miles ahead though in terms of entertainment value, replay ability, and multiplayer (both online and locally).
If I had to rank them I'd put them in this order:
RB
GH2
GH1
GH:80's
GH3
DerekinMerrick 02-26-08, 06:01 PM I have 2 of the wireless GHIII guitars and I'm amazed at how long the batteries last. I got the game at Christmas, and I've only replaced the batteries once.

10 songs I have played over 100 songs and still on the same batterys. Who ever told you that they always need to change the batteries need to stop doing so with their used TV remote ones. New batteries last a very long time. Also there is this new technology called rechargable its good stuff.
PD4Ever 02-26-08, 06:21 PM I totally prefer the GH3 guitar over the Rock Band guitar. I had a friend that was the same way but he eventually switched over the the RB guitar. For me the main diff is the clicking of the strum bar. I have to have the click to know when a strum registers. Also the wireless is awesome. I was having intermittent connection problems between the neck and body of the GH3 guitar that would make some of the frets stop working, but it hasnt been a problem the past couple weeks. Ive had all of the GH PS2 guitars including the wireless one, the 360 GH2 Explorer, GH3 Les Paul, and the RB Stratocaster and I would rank the RB guitar last on my list. Also I've gotten to the point that Rock Band guitar on expert isnt a challenge except for Green Grass and High Tides. However GH3 on expert after the first 30 songs becomes nearly impossible. Rock Band does have a much better party atmosphere too. If you are buying for 360, I'd say pickup the GH3 bundle and then get a game only copy or Rock Band and the seperate drum set. BTW if u do go for the whole Rock Band set get it at Sam's Club for $150 instead of $170 everywhere else retail. Or there is a Gamestop 10% off coupon that you could use on RB or GH3.
GrooveRite 02-26-08, 06:25 PM Its ALOT of fun for not just you but for friends...I have even gotten non-gamer friends of mine hooked.
Ain't that the truth! I have gotten about 5 buddies and their non-gaming wives hooked on this game. Its the main reason they come over my place now, lol! Of course I foresaw this when I demoed RB at Best Buy for the first time
darklordjames 02-26-08, 06:43 PM Rock Band would be the one to buy first, as the full kit. Then if you really like it, pick up GH3 with the wireless Les Paul for your second guitar.
Barnacleez 02-26-08, 06:49 PM Both are fun. Rock Band is funner. Plus the massive amount of DLC is awesome.
I have to use the GHIII guitar, batteries have lastest me a LONG time on it. I think I might need to solder the neck connections soon, but that's an easy mod. I don't like the strat.

This brings up the biggest complaint I have with Rockband. They make it to be a fun party game yet they sorta cripple the band tour in that everyone essentially has to move up in difficulty level if you wanna continue to unlock stuff. Alot of my friends play rockband once in a blue moon..usually when we all get together. I have created a band that we all use together and we essentally cannot get more fans..and progress because they just cannot play at higher levels..they try but it just becomes frustrating and defeats the whole fun party aspect...we usually just goto freeplay. Its also a sorta negative thing in that my friends see me at hard/expert while they are stuck at medium...its just that I play the game alot more...but I still do not think the game should be setup the way it is...there had to be other ways to provide the sense of "accomplishment".
I cannot think of other games that stop progress because of the difficulty level. Sure they lower scores, etc..but not stop progress.
It may seem like a minor thing but when you are with a group of people..some of which are not regular gamers...they wanna have fun and keep trying new songs and new venues....some (mostly the women and wives) like getting the virtual $$ and buying new cloths and such for their rockers.

Hehe ive always known I was the oddball. Seems like preferring the Strat over the GH3 guitar puts me in the minority.
Rock Band by a mile. If you really want just a guitar game get one of the Harmonix produced Guitar Heros.
I definitely prefer the Strat though I wish the strum bar was a springy as GH's.
Charlie Kocis 02-27-08, 07:46 AM It's funny how all you guys complain about the GH guitar feeling like a "cheap plastic toy". What do you think the RB guitar is made of? And either way your not playing a "real" guitar. And the Xplorer from GH2 was my fav, but sold it cause I couldn't stand the cord.

I agree with you 100%. This is an easy fix. They should simply have two options.
Option 1: play the game as is for the hardcore gamers who have friends who play often.
Option 2: have the ability to play the entire band tour on easy, while at the same time continue to accumulate fans, money, tour buses, etc. They should not "cap" progress simply because folks are stuck on easy or medium.
With the 2nd option, it would be local play only. No contact with the servers, leaderboards would not be applicable, and there would be no achievements.
darklordjames 02-27-08, 08:46 AM Option 2 sounds great! Me and my girl stopped playing the Tour because we hit the Medium cap. I am mostly on Hard now, but she has not had the time to practice so is still on Medium. We can't play anymore until she gets better, but she can't get better because she can't play Tour with me and have it effect anything. It's a vicious cycle that kills the game for people that want to play in a group, but don't care about being great at the game.
Duane T 02-27-08, 09:06 AM Another vote for Rock Band. I own RB and Guitar Hero II and III, and I just have more fun with Rock Band.
As someone else said, if you enjoy it and have friends over to play, pick up GH too for another game and the extra guitar.
SSpectre 02-27-08, 09:29 AM Hehe ive always known I was the oddball. Seems like preferring the Strat over the GH3 guitar puts me in the minority.
I prefer the Les Paul over the Strat. I do like the neck of the Strat, but the strum bar is the dealbreaker. Of course, I think my friend's Strat is broken (strum bar problem, he has one of the first ones to come out). He belives it works fine for him (he must jam down on it hard) so therefore it's not broken. I showed him on the menu that the selection doesn't always move when I press down, but whatever.
I still think the strum bar on the Strat feels like a wet noodle or something, but if I play with one that actually works right, then I might have a better opinion of it.

I understand people frustration. Not all my friends can play at expert level(well really just steve and me, and then I'm the only one who can do hard/expert drums). However it's a logical part of the band tour mode. The whole point is to be a band trying to make it big. It's not easy at all to make it big in the music industry. You go big or go home. To move ahead it's only logical to try and become better musicians/get better at the game in your respective parts. If my friends and I get stuck we just go to band quick play which still lets us use our custom rockers.
HMX's only mistake IMO was not being able to implement band world tour into xbox live in time. Then you could go online to progress further.
I've tried 3 or 4 times to use the Strat that came with Rock Band. I hate it and went back to the Les Paul almost immediately. Didn't care for the strum bar or the buttons on the neck. Since I don't have a ton of time to play there's no reason for me to try and learn to deal with the RB guitar.
RafaelSmith 02-27-08, 09:41 AM Well, after taking part in this discussion yesterday...I decided to finally use that $25.00 Circuit City gift card...picked up GH3 bundle.
The guitar I got does not seem as bad as the one I had played from a friend... I have to agree that the strum-bar is more responsive..however I much prefer the button/frets of the RB guitar.
As for the game...some good songs..some of which bring back some memories...that said...I do question the title of the game..."Legends of Rock"...I have not seen too many artist that I would consider "legends".
I checked the DLC and Rockband has GH3 beat by a landslide when it comes to downloadable content. I think I saw one pack I would be interested in and its cost was rather high when compared to the RB packs.
I have only played on Medium...but I will say that medium on GH3 is abit harder than medium on RB. Course it could be I am still not used to the guitar...I seem to miss the green fret alot..even when it looks to me like I got it. Hard/Expert should prove to be interesting.
I am using rechargeable batteries...so far no issues...So i really think my friends guitar was messed up in several ways.
I think overall I still prefer the RB guitar..it just "feels" better.

Obviously games should get harder the further you get into them. However, the user is usually able to select a difficulty level that raises or lowers the difficulty across the whole game. In Rockband, the solo career gets harder as you progress because the songs get harder. You don't have to increase the difficulty settings to move to the next set or venue. That is the way it should be in the world tour. Gamers should be able to access the entire world tour at a difficulty level they can handle and/or enjoy.

Medium on GH3 is a little harder than RB, Hard is a good bit harder, and Expert is MUCH harder on GH3, IMO. Some say the note charts on GH3 are unnecessarily complicated, and I agree on a lot of the songs. To me when I play GH2 or RB the charts seem more natural and I feel more like I'm "playing" the song vs. GH3 which feels like I'm just playing Simon with music in the background (on some songs, not all)
I like GH3 but haven't played it much at all since I got RB, especially since I'm addicted to the drums now
SpeedyHTPC 02-27-08, 12:59 PM I think you'll want to get both but RB first and then GH3. That is because you'll soon want another guitar, now, since we're talking about 360.
RafaelSmith 02-27-08, 01:11 PM Some say the note charts on GH3 are unnecessarily complicated, and I agree on a lot of the songs.
Personally I find the GH3 "screen" very distracting while playing. Wish there was a way to turn off all the little pops..."xx note streak", "star power ready". etc.
I much prefer Rockbands display. I can keep eye on the overdrive bar, the score, the # of stars (which i sorta use to gauge how close I am to the end of the song) and the crowd meter(handy playing with friends that are new to the game and I need to know when to save them)...all without missing a note. With GH3 i often found myself missing notes because I was distracted or tried to look at something on the screen.
Again, i am still getting used to GH3...so I figure eventually I will get used to things..but from an initial perspective...the GH3 screen, notices, indicators, etc seem messy.

I hated the popups at first too, got used to them tho. But I agree RB got the on-screen display almost perfect. I love that you can see how many stars you have during the song. Let's face it, there is a LOT of info on the screen. Rock meter, multiplier, score, stars, overdrive, etc. And RB does a much better job of letting you track all that without taking your eyes off the notes.
I also like the RB graphic style more vs. the over the top style of GH3, but thats just personal preference.
I do I miss the way GH3 tracks your high scores for songs in quick play. The RB interface for the leaderboards and setting up a band is clunky at best.

Yeah the RB interface for picking instruments, setting up bands and such is pretty bad. I really wish only one instrument/controller could be in control...cause more often than not when I get together with friends...everyone is just having a good time...naturally when someone first picks up the drum sticks they wanna start banging the drums...all the while I am trying to set things up for our band.
I do not do anything with leaderboards, top scores and such so that really does not matter to me. I actually only let me 360 have access to the internet when I need to D/l something...the rest of the time I am offline.
I might be the minority but if comparing single player career for guitar in both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, I'd say definitely GHIII. Might not be as 'realistic' as compared to RB charts, but GHIII is just so much more FUN to play.
Tomcats 02-28-08, 11:35 PM RB is soooo much more than GH.... however, the whole Aerosmith thing is cool, although I do not think that trick can be pulled off twice.
FIVE ONE SIX 02-29-08, 10:49 AM the only reason to get GH3 bundle should be for the guitar, and e-bay the sealed game immediately after purchase to get some of your money back, because GH2 is much better AND cheaper...
another gripe about GH3 is the high cost of DLC for it. i mean really, if you download a few music packs you're close to the $20 range give or take, in my opinion too much for game that started off at $59 to begin with...
darklordjames 02-29-08, 05:55 PM GH3 is the weakest of the bunch, but it isn't so horrible that it must be banished from the house forever. :)
headcase151 03-01-08, 11:11 AM The recharge pack for the Les Paul,is great.I`ve only had to charge it twice since Christmas. My daughter, and wife play everyday.
Hiredgoon 03-02-08, 04:09 PM Rock band, and its clear as day which one is preferred here.
I lurked on this thread and based on input here and several other sources, purchased Rock Band last Wednesday. I have been playing it as much as possible ever since. I cannot get enough. I thought I might enjoy it but never dreamed it'd capture me like this. I am working through the career mode on easy with the mic and drums and medium with the guitar. I hope to beat all of those and then go back and turn the difficulty up a notch on all of them and redo it.
I played online with a buddy of mine last Friday night. We simply could not stop. We were up till almost 2 in the morning jamming together.
I even got the wife to pick it up and sing a couple songs while I played the guitar. She said she was only going to do one but she ended up doing 3 :)
A couple questions for you guys...
1. I downloaded Fortunate Son this morning and noticed the text on the right side of the screen said to be careful because it's possible to download the same song more than once. Was that an indication that it is possible to PAY for the same song more han once on the same account? I assume not because Live has never worked like that. But I just wanted to check because I have 2 360s and usually download the content to both.
2. If I download a song and want to play it online with a friend, does he have to download it as well?
NoThru22 03-03-08, 09:15 AM You can download the same song twice if you buy it in a pack and separately. For example, if you bought the Police Pack 01 and Roxanne, you'd have purchased Roxanne twice.
Sunkist 03-03-08, 09:38 AM It might mean do not download the pack if you already bought one of the songs, and yes both of you have to get the song together I believe.
NoThru22 03-03-08, 09:44 AM If I host a match and I have a song and you do not, the song will be grayed out.
LandShark22 03-03-08, 09:45 AM You can download a song more than once, no problem. You'll only pay for it once even if you download it 10 times. But like the other guy said, if you then downloaded a pack that contained the same song, you'd be paying for it twice.
And yeah, for online multiplayer, all players have to have the song or it will be grayed out in the list.
Edit: Ninja'd by NoThru...
Having started with GH II, then GHIII and now Rock Band, I can, without hesitation, say Rock Band is by far the BEST. GH III was NOT good to me. The wireless Les Paul is nice, but I love the stratacastor form Rock Band. I too like GH II better than GHIII. GH III has great songs, but its WAY to hard at parts. I can play expert on Rock band, and struggle at Hard in GH III. I admit, if I could use the stratacastor in GH, i would be better, but until then, i dislike the game. I had my first 4 person band session this weekend, and we played for about 7 hours straight and had a blast. I have spent $80 on downloadable songs for Rock Band, and still dont own them all. GET ROCK BAND
RafaelSmith 03-03-08, 11:07 AM Well ive had some time now to compare GH3 and Rockband...and Rockband is clearly the better product.
After about 10 or so songs of playing GH3 with the Les Paul...my arms and hands are strained & hurting..I just cannot seem to find a comfortable position for the Les Paul.... My left/fret hand is the worst. i think the layout of the fret buttons just does not agree with me.
However, I can go play RB with the Strat all night long and not feel any strain or pain in my hands or arms.
Ive probably spent close to $80.00 on DLC from RB ....only saw one pack that I would consider buying for GH3.
GH3 has a few nice songs...but thats about it. In my opinion, RB has it beat in just about every category.
Actually in terms of songs...I still think GH2 had some of the best ones.
imho:
gh2 - awesome
gh3 - awesome
rock band - greatest achievement of mankind
i have purchased every gh2, gh3, and rock band dlc song.
i understand the rock band love, but why the gh hate? if you can only afford one but not the other, how is that gh's fault?

Not really GH hate....its just that when its all said and done...RB is everything GH3 is and more. The biggest difference is with the guitar...which it seems is entirely a user preference thing. I personally find the RB guitar more comfortable to use...especially for longer periods of time.
And, I am no EA fan but I think EA/Harmonix are handling RB and its DLC much better than Activision is handling GH3. And activision has rubbed me the wrong way by not allowing the RB guitar to work with GH3. Rockband did not block the GH guitars.
All that said...in terms of guitar tunes...I would have to say that the Eric Johnson tune in GH3 is my favorite and most fun to play :)
Barnacleez 03-03-08, 12:46 PM Your answers:
1. The disclaimer is for songs that are available as both singles and in packs. For example, last week a Nine Inch Nails pack was released. You can buy it as either a bundle of 3 songs, or each of the same songs individually. They just want to make it clear that you can pay for the same song twice if you buy the single and the pack.
2. Yes. You both need to DL the songs to play it over the net.
