View Full Version : PS3 and Lumagen VisionHDP
I recently got a PS3, more for playing Blu-ray movies than for gaming. I was thinking of hooking it up to my Lumagen VisionHDP via component video. In doing that, I now see that I won't be getting lossless audio as the only way to get lossless audio from a PS3 is to use HDMI. I don't have a receiver that accepts HDMI. It only had a DD5.1 decoder and 5.1 analog input.
If I were to get a receiver that could accept HDMI, then how would I go about feeding the video to the VisionHDP? Perhaps HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver for audio and video, then HDMI from the receiver to a HDMI to DVI adapter, then to a HDfury, then to my VisionHDP, then to the projector (Sony VPH-1292Q CRT projector)?
It's looking more like I should just take the PS3 back and get a stand-alone Blu-ray player with 5.1 analog output, as my receiver has 5.1 analog input. That would save me the cost of lots of additional equipment, even if I'd lose the PS3 as more than just a Blu-ray player.
I want to take advantage of the VisionHDP's ability to take 1080i @ 60Hz to 1080p @ 48Hz for film content. I also want to take advantage of my 1292Q's ability to display 1080p @ 48Hz for film content. Any suggestions? Thanks!
usualsuspects 02-26-08, 12:43 PM I run Toshiba XA2 and PS3 via HDMI to my receiver first to get the audio, then to my Lumagen HDQ on a single input for video processing then to projector. HDMI receivers that process high bit rate audio have come way down in price in the last year. I like the PS3 for the promised 2.0 profile support in the future. If your receiver is several years old, I will bet that just getting a new receiver will make a positive difference in SQ before you add on the HBR audio via HDMI. On the HDFury, I would put it on the Lumagen output. That way you can keep the video in the digital domain for processing in the Lumagen with analog as the final step before the PJ. I run my sources at 1080i60 through the receiver (it will not accept 1080p) - the HDQ does de-interlacing and other magic, then outputs at 1080p48 for film, and 1080p60 for video. I would not use HDMI to DVI adapters - for the cost of the adapter you can get a cable from Monoprice.com with HDMI on one and and DVI on the other - more reliable than an adapter.
So you are suggesting this...
PS3 ---[HDMI audio/video]---> Receiver ---[HDMI to DVI video cable]---> Lumagen VisionHDP ---> HDfury ---[VGA to RGBHV BNC breakout cable]---> 1292Q
I wonder how that would affect my other non-HDMI, analog video sources on the analog inputs of the VisionHDP. Would the VisionHDP pipe those out the DVI output? Hopefully my DVI output didn't get disabled when I had it upgraded with RGBHV outputs by Lumagen. I guess that's a question for Lumagen.
usualsuspects 02-26-08, 03:11 PM AFAIK The BNC mod should not have disabled the DVI output. Analog sources can be output on DVI, but not the opposite for HDCP protected digital inputs. What analog sources do you have?
I have a region-free DVD player on s-video, MyHD card on component, and Toshiba HD-A1 on component to the HDP. I guess it's just a matter of trying it all out. Thanks for the info!
I'll have to check out what's out there for HDMI receivers. It would probably be good to get one that can handle 1080p as even though Blu-ray movies would be fed as 1080i through the receiver and out to the HDP, PS3 games would be 1080p @ 60Hz from the start. I'd also have to make sure that it doesn't process the video as that's the scaler's job! I bet I'll pay a premium for a receiver than can receive 1080p video via HDMI. Doh!
occammd 02-26-08, 06:53 PM my blu ray movies are 1080p
My Blu-ray movies are 1080p @ 48Hz.
Oliver Klohs 02-27-08, 07:13 AM Mike,
1080i via a receiver to the Lumagen works flawlessly in the signal chain you describe.
I would also suggest to add a DVI out board to the MyHD - definitely worth it.
Oliver
occammd 02-27-08, 07:43 AM I guess I'm confused as to why your BD movies would be fed 1080p @48 and not 1080i @ 48 through the receiver. I'm obviously missing a basic point. I have a PS3 and myHD as well and thinking about a scaler so I'm interested in your final conclusion.
I have my PS3 outputting 1080i @ 60Hz and my VisionHDP is converting that into 1080p @ 48Hz because I have a CRT projector that can refresh at 48Hz, which is better for film content because it's a multiple of film's frame rate of 24fps. That way motion is smooth and judder-free.
For now I'm not going through a receiver as my receiver doesn't accept HDMI. Right now I'm doing this for video and audio...
PS3 ---[component video]---> Lumagen VisionHDP ---[RGBHV BNC]---> 1292Q
PS3 ---[optical digital audio] ---> receiver
I'm noticing that my VisionHDP doesn't like being fed 1080p @ I assume 60Hz via component video. Component video should be able to accomidate 1080p @ 60Hz, right? The signal goes in and out when I test that resolution. Maybe I just need to tweak some settings with the VisionHDP for it to stabilize? I remember 1080p being an issue when setting up my HD-A1. I think I had to play with some size controls and that got the picture working. Though in that case it was 1080p output that was the issue as the HD-A1 outputs 1080i. I guess no 1080p input for now is only a big deal for games that support 1080p.
Another annoyance with the current setup is that it seems a Blu-ray movie would have to support DD5.1 for me to get surround sound. I bought Shoot 'Em Up on BD and that has DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. But through optical digital audio connection to my DD5.1 decoding receiver, I only get stereo sound! Lame! Maybe I'm doing something wrong or maybe that's what I get for using a 8 year old receiver. Though my HD-A1 happily sends 5.1 analog audio to me receiver. I wish the PS3 had analog audio out.
I guess I'll be saving up for a new receiver now. Something tells me I'll be trying a Blu-ray standalone player with my old receiver before forking out $700 for a new receiver and a HDfury.
My VisionHDP no longer has any free component video inputs available. I was thinking of getting a VGA to DVI cable for hooking the MyHD up to it (I was connecting it through component before). Oliver, thanks for reminding me that there is a DVI add-on for the MyHD. That would probably be the way to go, as opposed to getting a VGA to DVI cable.
occammd 02-27-08, 10:12 AM Sorry, now I get it, I output 1080p@24 and my plasma runs it at 72.
RandyFreeman 02-27-08, 03:27 PM With recent software loaded the LumagenHDP can accept inputs up to 1080p30. This includes 1080p24 which is the native resolution of HD-DVD and Blu-ray players.
Best regards,
Randy Freeman
Thanks for the reminder, Randy. I'll have to check what firmware I'm running. Here's the link to the update page for anyone interested in knowing how to do that and update their firmware...
