So many of the surround speakers are huge (IMO) boxes with dimensions like 12HX8WX12D. Are you actually hanging these goliaths on your walls? Whatever happened to the small, diminuative, almost invisible surrounds?

Kal Rubinson 02-26-08, 07:37 PM So many of the surround speakers are huge (IMO) boxes with dimensions like 12HX8WX12D. Huge? My surrounds are 41HX9WX13D! (By surround, I assumed you meant the ones in the rear. My front speakers are much larger than that and I am not unique.) Are you actually hanging these goliaths on your walls?Of course not. They sit on the floor. Whatever happened to the small, diminuative, almost invisible surrounds? They sound lousy. Some people buy them and discover that they are inadequate. oztech 02-26-08, 07:45 PM I consider mine average 15 x 8.250 x 13 on 29inch stands. steve71 02-26-08, 08:27 PM These are about 12x24x9 (40lb) and hang on the wall. I tried smaller speakers but didn't like the result. sourbeef 02-26-08, 08:50 PM These are about 12x24x9 (40lb) and hang on the wall. I tried smaller speakers but didn't like the result. OMG  What kind is it? steve71 02-26-08, 09:01 PM OMG  What kind is it? Just an old Polk Monitor 7A speaker that I painted black. The 6" is active and the 10" is a passive radiator. steve71 02-26-08, 09:08 PM .... Cruzin 02-27-08, 04:24 PM I just finished mounting my Dali concept 2's on the rear wall.15 pounds each. They are 10x8x16. Since they dont have a wall mounting hole any where,I was looking for a way to mount them without drilling.I found these mounts at a local B&M.They clamp on to the speaker :) imromo24 02-27-08, 09:54 PM you bet some people hang big speakers. It would take me forever to find the picture but I saw a girl around here hang these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XSBJRWover the ends of a couch! Pinstripe 02-28-08, 10:58 AM Depends is you have a dedicated HT or a living room. g_bartman 02-28-08, 12:36 PM I have definitive technology bipolars on my rear wall. they are 22x11.5x7.75 and have the same mid/tweeter configuration as my mains (2 6.5's 1 above and 1 below the tweeter) They match the wall and got waf. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee316/speakerman_ht/2007_092280monpro0001.jpg Tom Brennan 02-28-08, 01:06 PM I used to use these as surrounds. JBL 4560 bins with LE-15Bs and JBL LE-175s on McCauley lenses. Wish I still had the lenses, they had a very wide pattern, 120 degrees, that made for a very spacious effect. And they looked really cool. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh92/Irishtom29/Mammoetguys065.jpg boomster 02-28-08, 01:39 PM You won't believe what you are missing with the smaller invisible ones. I've learned since my small speaker surround days that there is a lot of information in those channels that just surrounds you better when you get all of it. While a subwoofer can be used for the low ends, I still think having each surround support full range frequencies sounds much better. There can be a lot of base and treble in surround channels. PULLIAMM 02-28-08, 01:48 PM My surrounds are floorstanders, about 80% as large as my mains. Were they factory white? I am looking for rears for my Boston Acoustics E100 fronts. On Deftech website the BPVX/P looks impressive but not available in white. Help me out. Cheers A g_bartman 02-29-08, 10:35 AM They are the bpvx. The bpvxp has powered drivers so need an outlet near by. I got them used off audiogon, don't know if they are still available in white. porsche951 02-29-08, 12:38 PM They sound like crap. +1, audio fecal matter... |
