View Full Version : Golldmun Blu Ray Player $16,900
Steve Bruzonsky 02-26-08, 11:58 PM Whose gonna buy one of these?
http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/news/2008/02/goldmund_introd.php
Woops. Its under $20K. Does it quality for this forum? HA!
Steve Bruzonsky 02-27-08, 12:03 AM And I beat Cinemax to the punch. He typically is first to announce this sort of stuff!
bigbrother52 02-27-08, 02:33 AM From the Goldmund website.... http://www.goldmund.com/news/
"The new player can play DVD and CD's in addition to the Blu-Ray discs. But the standard of these is not up to the level encountered in the other players of the company and that its design aimed at improving the BD disks in priority"
Given what they say about the quality of the rest of the player, I'm disheartend.
The Eidos 20BD Blu is only a player in their "High End" line to begin with, hence the under $20,000 tag. It seems they'll need a Blu player of the Eidos 36A/D "Ultimate" line and over $20,000 before it can do more then one thing really great!
I guess I'll wait to see, what I expect will be a modified Esoteric DV60 Blu.
I have no doubt they'll also use the same Pioneer parts but come in at maybe half of what is required to be on this forum but would hope the old parts of the machine play just as well as the new Blu part for 6-10g's less then Goldmund, so we might get to go back to a single player once more.
A machine that does all the things it's supposed to do...WELL!!!
Is that too much to ask for?
Chu Gai 02-27-08, 07:17 AM And whose internals did they take out this time and put into a new box?
Steve Bruzonsky 02-27-08, 07:52 AM Isn't it amazing just how quick they came out with a Blu Ray player right after
Toshiba declared HD DVD dead? What a fantastic design team they have to design their new Blu Ray player in a matter of less than several weeks!!!
mburnstein 02-27-08, 08:07 AM So did you order it already Steve??:)
Chu Gai 02-27-08, 08:24 AM I'm sure we can expect more of what's like below from that stellar innovator, Goldmund.
http://www.eden-audio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=222&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
As far as Steve's astute observation about their rapid introduction they undoubtably had something like a Toshiba and Sony guts prepped by their design team. Kind of like it didn't matter who won the SuperBowl because the shirts and hats were already in the works.
Alan Gouger 02-27-08, 10:00 AM And whose internals did they take out this time and put into a new box?
;)
jm_etue 02-27-08, 10:14 AM And whose internals did they take out this time and put into a new box?
Every player, including Denon's uses some outsourced components.
Its the love and care given to the unit and the extra engineering steps
that make it worth the 5,000% markup.
We should set-up a power-buy.
joeycalda 02-27-08, 10:38 AM Boulders new CD player should be topping out at over 20k..worthy of a forum review:D
And whose internals did they take out this time and put into a new box?Chu, but it is a very nice box.
Chu Gai 02-27-08, 12:52 PM Yes, just like pet rocks came in a box.
There was a time when a high end DVD player can claim one advantage over the commercial units. This advantage was that the high end unit would have better analog outputs because they take better care or use more expensive components in this aspect of the design.
However, nowadays the Bluray/DVD/CD players are all digital. The connection to the TV is all digital (HDMI). Furthermore they all use a selection of chips from the same chip manufacturers namely Gennum, Realta etc.
If the chip manufacturers introduce the next generation of their processors, the previous generation of players become obsolete. So you can spend $800 a year for a new Bluray player and it will take more than 20 years to match the price of the Goldmund. In 20 years, you will own an $800 Bluray player which is 20 generations ahead of your Goldmund. But you do not need to wait 20 years, in one year the next generation Bluray player would eclipse the previous generation of products.
Essentially, investing in a Bluray/DVD player is becoming more and more like purchasing a PC.
Suddenly the Denon 3800 is starting to look like a bargain!
Alimentall 02-27-08, 05:58 PM This thread reminds me that the label "troll" is purely a matter of whether the net catches fish when you throw it. Fortunately, there's not too many Goldmund owners here to get incredibly indignant.
I would say that there's a lot more of this in high-end that doesn't get challenged and Goldmund is hardly the only one, though they may be a bit more blatant and ridiculous about it. Sure happens a *lot* at the lower end though they might tack on $100 or $200, not $16K.
MSmith83 02-27-08, 06:01 PM I'm sure we can expect more of what's like below from that stellar innovator, Goldmund.

I am really in the wrong business if there is a market for their players. If they can sell these players, then more power to them.
Something tells me that I need to buy some Pioneer BDP-95FD Blu-ray players, toroidal power transformers, and palatable HTPC cases. If I put these together and sell them under some arcane company name, then I could probably market them for about $15,000 each.
Anthony A. 02-27-08, 06:05 PM just for everyones fyi, there is another thread on this topic in the blu ray player forum.
Alimentall 02-27-08, 06:09 PM There are guys that mod $150 Oppo players and charge $1500 for them. Still noisy, still bright, still harsh, so sure, get your soldering gun out!
Chu Gai 02-27-08, 06:37 PM The modding business might be one of the biggest cons out there. Recently I heard my son's Oppo and I didn't get that same impression as you John.
Alimentall 02-27-08, 06:39 PM Well, maybe the stock one sounds better than the modded one i heard. Of course, the Oppo is most perfectly used as an all digital transport.
Haroon Malik 02-28-08, 01:49 AM For the time being Pioneer and Denon are the two brands that one must look at for the high end in Blu-Ray. Players costing more like the Goldmund are just luxury names but lacking a lot compared to the price tag.
The eventual Meridian unit should be a good one once Meridian gets over its valid reservations of the super duper connection called HDMI 1.3 (& counting). :D
QueueCumber 02-28-08, 01:10 PM For the time being Pioneer and Denon are the two brands that one must look at for the high end in Blu-Ray.
I hope Denon comes out with a universal like the DVD-5910 that supports Blu-Ray as well as SACD, DVD-A, DVD-V. I want to be able to replace my DVD-5910 instead of adding an extra unit just for Blu-Ray...

It makes sense to have one fantastic unit to play all video formats.
The flagship behemoth in a Blu-Ray version will arrive eventually. I read some rumours here on AVS about a unit being introduced later this year. However, I don't think that such a unit will be available this year. Maybe next year at this time the model will be available with Blu-Ray Profile 2.0, THX Ultra II and all the formats that you mentioned above. The wait will be a little long but well worth it IMO.

Except ValhallaPC does all his own work in-house, albeit chock full o' nuts. :D
Bhagi Katbamna 02-28-08, 04:13 PM I'm not sure why the tweakers are busting ValhallaPC's chops. After all, he's taking tweaking to the ultimate level.
Given the nature of the high-end, Goldmund will probably sell as many as they make.

Unbelievable. I never imagined you could get so little for so much money. What a joke. Most people who spend that much get something interesting at least.
Thank God Goldmund makes their own cables also... I would hate to think they would outsource something they could make 6900%, or more, profit on. I came away from that article with a new found respect for Monster Cables. Goldmund makes the Monster Cable con look righteous.

Alimentall 02-29-08, 11:02 AM Qualifies for the forum though.
Of course, the title should be 'rich people do stupid things sometimes' All that for a plasma TV in an apartment?
cctvtech 02-29-08, 11:05 AM Its the love and care given to the unit and the extra engineering steps that make it worth the 5,000% markup.Love and care? We are talking about a piece of electronics equipment, not a first-born child, right?
Alimentall 02-29-08, 11:39 AM I consider 'love and care' when they bother to take care to do the little things that lower noise floor and improve the circuit board design, rather than design by computer and drop it in a box. Of course, I'm not so sure there's $16K in TLC in moving a couple of boards and dropping in a toroid. if it were $2k, mebbe.
Michael Grant 02-29-08, 11:46 AM something tells me (was it the call for a powerbuy?) that jm_etue was being a bit sarcastic :)

The company that became Goldmund U.S.A sold me my Theta Casablanca. They were a Theta dealer before they became Goldmund's U.S. distributor. My original box had Goldmund U.S.A. tape all over it.

How much extra did they charge for putting Goldmund tape all over the box?

Multiple quote is easy. Ever heard of drag and drop.
Open up your word processor. Do your first quote and drag and drop it in your document. Now go back to the original thread and drag and drop your second quote to the document. Now take the entire text of the document and drag and drop it to your post.

I don't have to spend my time on the internet propping up moribund companies by posting that their expensive processor "will soon be updated". Or trying to rationalize that them being bought out will be good for the company.
The ears soon follow.

Bhagi is a legit Missouri doctor, per the above search.
He might be good with his patients and just a BUGGER on the web.
After all, I am good with my clients and yet somewhat of a BUGGER on the web.
Steve Bruzonsky 03-02-08, 01:34 PM Apparantly personal attacks are allowed as long as you're one of the golden boys.
Your personal attacks have been allowed.

Is being a vocal critic of a "troll", an 'anti-troll', if you will, the act of being openly bothered by a 'troll' any better than the original act of trolling? Just seems to raise the noise level as far as I'm concerned, but hardly shows any better discipline.

Alimentall, you are right on this.
But a catfight sometimes is more fun than catnip!
Alimentall 03-02-08, 01:47 PM If you enjoy 'the catfight' as you do, that's one thing, but if one vocally pretends to be annoyed by it while actively being involved in it that's hypocrisy.
Personally, I like joking around about silly matters and deep, even heated discussions about important matters. But some people seem to lose their sense of humor after spending lots of money. Thats why I found the Goldmund thread ironic. Is spending $17K on a modified japanese player any better than, say, spending $10K on cables or $50K on amps if no one can prove any audible improvement? Goldmund is an easy target because, AFAIK, no one here owns any. Substitute a few other brands in this thread and there would be blood on the floor.

Once again some legitimate posts by one who at time posts hypocritically as well. Congrats.

Everyone is a hypocrite at times, the trick is to avoid making a pattern of it.

I don't give a $hit about Goldmund or any of their products but this above post is irrational. So now you feel that fighting back against a troll is a bad thing ? It just makes no sense to be a troll ,like yourself, and not derive pleasure from being attacked, what other reason is there for you to troll ?

See signature below. Fighting back against trolling is like launching missiles against war or hitting your wife for complaining you don't love her enough. The only way to stop trolling is to not respond to it. A fisherman can't catch you if you don't bite. If the fish don't bite, the fisherman gets a new job, but real fish don't have evolved brains. If you respond to what *you* think is a troll, then you're worse than the troll. Especially since 'trolls' generally are only expressing a viewpoint with which you angrily disagree. Real trolls may thrive on being personally attacked, but I don't nor does Bhagi or most other people here that are falsely labeled as trolls when in reality, they just think differently than you do. You're not fighting back against 'trolling', you're fighting back against people who don't always agree with you.

once again a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
you're preaching to the choir John:o

Well then anwser the question, why do you troll ?
Art
Alimentall 03-02-08, 04:58 PM Well, answer this question, why do you beat your wife?
Or did you mean to ask why I have different beliefs and experiences than you do?
Or maybe you're asking yourself why you bite, even when no one is fishing?
oneobgyn 03-02-08, 05:10 PM Let's all guess how many more posts in this thread before John gets it closed down....ooops I forgot the topic was all about the Goldmund BluRay Player rather than beating our wives.
John we would probably all beat our heads against the wall if it would stifle you and make you go away.
Hughman 03-02-08, 05:16 PM Can you guys please return to backslapping and telling each other what wonderful people you are just to get things back on track.
Alimentall 03-02-08, 05:17 PM A more intellectually honest phrase would be 'let's all guess how many more posts in this thread before we get it closed down.
See, what I'm pointing out here is exactly how you can't put all the blame on everyone else for your participation in an argument. "Trolls" are only effective against people with no self control. Calling someone a 'troll' is an admission of having no self-discipline.

I've been accused of worse but those who know me would never characterize me as lacking self discipline. I think you are a troll John. Telling us that you should be able to be a troll (if you like call it something else) and then responding that those of us who call you on the behavior have issues is some of the best projections I've seen in a while.
I hope at some point you will look in the mirror .

That's funny. I thought that was John posting a picture of himself looking in the mirror as Art suggested:)

Calling someone a troll is also a way of devaluing their opinions and contributions. The grand majority of my posts are actually answering questions and helping people on the forum. It's a bit egocentric and myopic to look at a few posts that bother you and then call names based on that. It's like calling Halle Berry ugly because she had a bad hair day. Or saying you're an "JVC hater" as though that defines your entire forum persona. In your case, perhaps using the term 'troll' is an indication of being overly sensitive.

I agree ,most of your posts are looking to help others that's true ,I should not accuse you of being a troll as that is too one dimensional just of trolling which I wish you would simply stop.

Alimentall 03-02-08, 07:14 PM Well, if you mean occasionally attempting to joke around with OB, sure, I can stop that, since his sense of humor goes only one way.
Alimentall 03-02-08, 07:51 PM I ordered three players already based on Steve's unconditional recommendation for it :)

Actually, i legitimately think VPC could do a better upgrade than Goldmund, though it might not look as pretty. If I believed it would make that difference, I'd hire the guy, he's a bit out there, but he's dedicated and not just slapping in 14 gauge wire.
joeycalda 03-03-08, 01:52 AM valhalla pc.....that guy set him self up for criticism with that whacked out paper job, and he has shown in the past that he doesn't care what people think...and I am sure that he likes getting mentioned in jest than not get mentioned at all!!

VahallaPC does his antics strictly for notoriety. He luvs to be mentioned however wherever. He never takes it personally like most. He never strikes back. And he never uses any test gear and has no idea the accuracy of what he is listening to. What a guy!!!
