View Full Version : Viewing distance and Size...
Hey guys, I am the owner of a panny HD RPTV 53" and sit 13 feet back. As soon as the 08 Sasung models come out, I am sure interested in the LED 7 series...
I am trying to make my 1st decision about what to go with, 61 or 67"? 61 is already 8 more inches on the diagonal then what I have. I don't want my decision to make the image become less crisp in detail because of size.
What are your setups and what have you noticed about image detail?
davegow 02-28-08, 12:51 PM From 13 feet back I would get the 67 inch. Even decent quality SD should be quite watchable from that distance.
Humm 13’, 80” would be good. :D
Sam61HD 02-29-08, 12:13 PM I have the HLT6187 LED DLP at about 12' and viewing is WOUNDERFUL!!!
Wesley5 02-29-08, 12:57 PM Resolution is also a factor, if it's a 1080p set, with 1080 source, you can sit a bit closer than 720pset/source.
Here is a chart I googled: http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.png

The TV still is not big enough
John Mason 03-01-08, 01:51 PM The goal, while not absolute due to viewing tastes, is for a 33-degree-wide image (for greater immersion). A viewing distance of about 1.5X screen diagonal, or ~3X screen height, achieves that. -- John
westa6969 03-02-08, 06:47 AM I've view a 57" LCD FP Sharp for 16 months at 8.5' and crave bigger, my biggest regret is not going to the 65" back then when the difference was so little but I feared it being to big at the time. Same two million pixels get bigger and bring out more details and WoW factor. Even my SD isn't all that bad until you put on a quality BD or HD or turn on CNN HD vs SD. Go Big and you defiinitely have the distance for the 67" if you primarily view HD Content.
I'm considering the Mits Laser later this year if it proves to be a true innovation and in it's biggest available size.
Enjoy!:)
Artwood 03-02-08, 10:08 AM Go with a Mitsubishi 73-inch!
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-02-08, 10:13 AM Only problem with them is they seem to have lamp failures around ~2-3K hours.
Which for a main viewing display isn't very long.
They are also said to have a extra loud fan compared to other rptv's.
I had been considering a 73734 or 73833 until I read of the lamps, fan and premature L.E. failures.
I'm hoping Samsung took a leap forward in PQ with their soon to be released 67" LED's.

It even has metric if that tickles your pickle.
Lets keep it on track here, mind is already made on Samsung 08 LED DLPs...
Just let us know your experiences with the inch Display and feet you are sitting...
65 inches at about 9.5 feet. TV is too damn small at that distance. 70" would be about right but I could live with bigger :)
All these posts all the time about worrying about a tv being to big? You guys are all crazy :)
I do have my eye on these new samsung's and plan on getting the LED 67". Price looks really attractive if it's true that that's what these price will start at around. I'd really to get the 70" plus size but it's only lamp based? WTF?

I guess if all you watch is HD, 70" at 9.5 feet is ok. I watch SD along with HD, and for me, at 9.5 feet, 50" to 55" is about perfect. But then, I never did understand wanting to sit within the first 10 rows in a movie theater.
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-02-08, 05:15 PM Well, a 70" display @ 9.5' isn't the same as a movie screen from first few rows.
In the first few rows you really have to move your eyes back and forth, not so for a ~70" display from ~9.5'.
I guess it's all personal preference. For me, a 70" is ok until the action picks up and then it's just too much movement too close. A lot more comfortable for me to sit back a few feet and take it all in.
HiramAbiff 03-02-08, 09:21 PM First few rows? I sat there when I was younger, but not anymore. The ideal place in an actual movie theater is around one-half to two-thirds back. You want the screen to take up a 30-40 degree viewing angle (horizontally). Not too far away, but not so close that you have to crane your neck around to see parts of the screen.
FWIW I sit 5.5 feet from a 42" screen for 1080i, 8 feet back for 480p.

A 70 viewed from 9 provides about the same viewing angle as sitting in the back row of the cinema.
Sit any further back and it will be like viewing from the foyer. :D
JOHNnDENVER 03-03-08, 11:00 AM 8' from 106" 16:9 diagonal here... The bigger the better. :)
Ken Wilhelm 03-03-08, 12:00 PM I seat 10' from my 61" Samsung and I enjoy the HD channels, but sometimes I wish I had the 56" when I have to watch SD. Will HD digital take over all TV channels in 2009 and make things clearer?
davegow 03-03-08, 02:07 PM ...Will HD digital take over all TV channels in 2009 and make things clearer?
No. In 2009 U.S. OTA signals must switch from analog to digital but this has no direct affect on the amount of HD content, which remains a purely commercial decision.
I dont mean to hijack the thread, but would you reconsider screen size for SD or gaming? If so, to what capacity does it alter your suggested screen size?
For example, I have about 10 of room and most of the equations and sites you guys have mentioned suggest 78 80. This seems ridiculously large considering its use will be pretty evenly divided between PS3, SD, and HD (inc. movies).

If I had 10 feet max, for gaming and SD and HD, I'd go with a 61 inch. No higher then a 65. i'd get sick with a 70-80 inch game screen in 10 feet...
tbing13 03-04-08, 12:50 PM I am also 10' away and trying to decide between 57 or 65. I personally want to have quality pic over size.
tbing13 03-14-08, 10:20 PM went to big box store and local av store everybody is saying by the 57 and dont go over 60. I am 10 feet away, however everyone here is saying 65. I am confused!!!
Sweet thread, just what I was looking for......
Building a dedicated HT room, due to floor layout I have decided to go RP, 1080p....I sit about 7'6" - 9' (when fully reclined) from the screen....the question is 65" - 73"?
