A Year or so Ago i had the problem and it went away,
but it crept back up, seems the image is really contrasted, and the color convergence is getting worse by the day, and the Status LED on the front blinks 4 Times repeatedly while the TV is off or ON. so, I have it unplugged for now, but Im more than likely gonna get me a 50 Inch LCD to replace it.
YES its behind a NICE surge protector, Yes I've cycled the Power... I have no idea what causes the TV to start this.

While unplugging it usually fixes it (dunno why),
im still having some bad convergence on the edges, everything either has red or blue shadows....
the service menu options for D-Conv have no effect.

Have you experimented with bypassing the surge protector? Surge protectors do deteriorate over time. The MOV component can change characteristics after repeated use. The MOV device basically shorts to ground any surge voltage.
4 blinks of the Standby LED has the following service manual entry as one of the symptoms: "Power Line is Shorted". Maybe the MOV is shorting it?
Are non-functional DCONV parameters a known issue with the HS420s or is this just your set? I think that I've posted this before, but according to the HS510 (and others) service manual, the dynamic convergence (DCONV) is disabled during static convergence alignment by disconnecting connector CN903. Is it possible that this is still disconnected after factory alignment?

oops, its 5 Blinks, not 4... but I'll try that anyway,
funny unplugging it for 20 minutes fixes the blinking light for about 30 minutes, but color convergence stayed off, I dont remember how I got it to stop last time it happened, (maybe it was the circuit breaker).
as for the D-Conv in my SM. I dont know, its never worked even when I first tried it, some one said that its disabled, but why would it be in the SM if its disabled...
the TV is pretty much out of warranty with SONY, (checking my notes, this is what happened last time, and Sony told me to take it to a repair center, yeah I keep a folder with notes on S.M. Changes and whatnot),
anyway, it Is 5 Flashes, Pause, 5 Flashes, whether I have it on Or off.
My Service Agreement with Sears on this TV doesnt Expire till 03/2009..
but, they no longer carry thing model and they'll try and rip me off with a small LCD, as an exchange more than likely.

the blinkin' has stopped for now, but the color convergence issues that was normally only on the extreme edges fo teh screen now plague the entire screen,
as it was last time, the brighter colors TEAR across the screen to the RIGHT.
