View Full Version : Blu-ray vs. HD DVD Paramount Dilema?

The other day I was able to return some movies to FYE and get full credit for them, so I picked up Shooter, Coming to America, and Mission Impossible on Blu-ray @ no cost (would have cost $100). I was able to get these 3 same movies on HD DVD for about $12 each from amazon/ebay. Now I have about 76 HD DVD movies and about 90 Blu-ray, and I would prefer to eventually have all movies on one format. Do you guys think it would be smart to just keep the HD DVD versions and wait for the Blu-ray versions to drop in price?

The second one. It will be a while before all the catalog titles make it to BR.

Just my guess and opinion:

Paramount:
For dual releases prior to April or May, most of the HD DVD versions had better PQ. After April, it's debatable whether the extra bit-rate added much, but at least you wont be downgrading. New titles released duringe exclusive period.. If released on blu-ray in short term, probably will be the same or better. Catalogs -- probably same or better.

Universal:
In the short term, my guess is the encodes will be the same on blu-ray as they were for HD DVD. In the log term, they may have remasters, etc...

Warner:
My guess is for most of the catalog and early exclusive HD releases, they will have identical encodes. As far as sound, not sure. If you own any Warner titles on HD DVD, chances are the sound was better on it than for blu-ray.

My overall thought is this. If you own a significant amount of HD DVDs, there's no reason to lose money on them trying to swap them for the blu-ray counterparts. In some cases, you may be throwing away money and getting a version that isn't quite as good. In other cases, you may be spending a few bucks for the exact same thing.

I personally will keep them, and when the blu-ray version comes out, if it's a movie I really like (rather than an impulse buy during BOGOs), I will check to see what it offers and if it's significant enough for me to replace the HD DVD version with.

I agree, I would prefer to have all my titles in one format but for now and the forseeable future, I do not want to lose the menu systems, PIP, extra content and interactivity I have had on many of the HD DVD releases.

I think it may be another 2 years before BR reaches the level of interactivity for these releases that HD DVD already has. When they do though, I will consider replacing my discs at that time.

I say sell the exclusives now while they are still exclusives. They will be worthless once they are released on Blu-Ray. The ones that you have that are released on both formats I would just keep till your player dies. At that time the Blu-Ray version should be cheap if Blu-Ray is still around.

Why sell your exclusives and be without the movies?

Because in a few months when you can't find it in stores anymore it will be worth something to someone. I'm just looking at it from a way to recoup some money to spend on new Blu-Ray titles. After they come out on Blu-Ray they will be worth way less.

I have approx. 140 HD-DVD's, and I do not see replacing them with the Blu Ray version any time soon. Unless, the Blu Ray version that come out is significantly better and in the $5 bin at Walmart. Otherwise I have enough players to be playing these discs for years.

Why sell your exclusives and be without the movies?Yea ,no kidding.

I looked at the list of exclusives and made sure I had all that I wanted. Some will be a long while before they see BD release. If you already have an HDDVD player this is simply a no brainer IMO.
