Just wondering really............I understand that colour banding and macroblocking for instance are a direct result of the encoding process, and that an increase in bitrate would cure these, but what causes edge enhancement?
Is it also a result of low bitrates, or is it created deliberately by the person authoring the encode?

It's when the studios doing the encode think it doesn't look sharp enough so they add in artificial edge enhancement sometimes
PS: I don't think increasing the bitrate would always cure colour banding (it might also be a limitation of the HDTV or the 12 bit to 8 bit conversion or the 8 bit source)

It's deliberate, it's the artificial boosting of contrast along already contrasting edges.

Here is a good read about EE (http://www.videophile.info/Guide_EE/Page_01.htm).
