Is there any way to hookup an over the air (broadcast) antenna to receive broadcast analog and HD TV signals and get them into my AV receiver? I'd like the broadcast video to pass to the TV over a single HDMI cable and to play the associated audio via the receiver just like all my other sources (DVD, PS3,...)?

I was hoping the receiver would do this for me (I was hoping it would have a TV tuner built in) but I now see it does not. As a newbie, I find it very "funny" an AV receiver, especially a flagship model like my SONY STR-DA5300ES, does not include a TV tuner. This means my AV receiver does not actually "receive" TV signals.

I searched the SONY web site and they do not sell any such unit. I looked at SONY because I want to use the remote from my SONY AV receiver.

Standalone boxes that can receive both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC, including HD) TV OTA are scarce. There's the PrimeDTV PHD-205 which seems to be sold only by its maker, online. There are also the Sony DHG-HDD250 and 500 DVRs which are discontinued but can be found secondhand. They're also much more expensive.

The only standalone digital receiver that's commonly available in bricks-n-mortar stores is the Samsung DTB-H260F. There's a long thread about it in this forum. There are some others that are available online, and many older models that you can find secondhand. See the sticky thread titled something like "AVS STB Synopsis," at the top of this forum.

To get analog TV also, you can use an old VCR. It doesn't matter if it still works as a recorder/player, so long as the tuner still works.

For HD, stay away from the "converter boxes" that are coming out now for the analog-to-digital OTA TV transition. They don't have HD outputs, only SD, because they're intended specifically for use with old analog TVs.

That's probably because they're descended from audio-only receivers which include AM/FM radio tuners, as opposed to integrated amplifiers which don't have any tuners at all. It would seem natural to include TV tuners as an extension of the receiver concept. I guess manufacturers figure there wouldn't be enough demand to offset the increased cost, considering that most people have TVs with built-in tuners already. Except for digital tuners, but that's a temporary phase.

AV Receiver manufacturers take note:

I LOVE this idea. There are lots of us out here with front projectors and other monitors which don't have tuners in them so we need tuners.

I would love to be able to ditch my standalone tuner and have the tuner built-into the receiver.

This would be especially interesting if you also put a high quality video processor into the receiver so that we could get rid of the separate processor box too.
