I am the owner of a Panasonic 50PX75U and a Philips HTS6500 2.1 system. The 6500 is capable of upconverting and it is a progressive scan DVD player. Honestly, I don't know what all this means. I know that the upconverting feature should make my normal DVD's look better, and I'm assuming the progressive scan function should also make it play better.
My question is whether I have to program the player any special way to enable both of these functions? Or are these functions automatically carried out by the DVD player if it's properly hooked up?
Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Presumably the player's controls let you select the output signal resolution. If it is producing 480p, it is "progressive scan". If it is producing 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, it is "upconverting".
Try the different options and see if you like any better than the others. For best results, use a calibration disc.

Normally, upconverting is only possible over an HDMI connection.
A few players can be hacked to upconvert over component.

I do have the HDMI connection, so is the upconversion usually an option I can select on a menu?

Or a button on the remote. Did the player come with a manual?
