Hey guys,

I am curious if anyone has seen and resolved this specific issue with Xbox Live. There is one friend of mine whom I cannot hear through the Live communicator while in a game or game lobby. I can hear him if we initiate a private chat but not while in the lobby.

Things I know about this problem:

1. We both have an OPEN NAT.
2. We can hear other people in the lobbies/games, just not each other.
3. We can hear each other if we join a private chat.
4. My router is neither on the approved nor disapproved list of routers (See Here) (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox/homenetworking/compatible.htm)
5. I am using a wired headset.
6. My router is a Belkin N1 wireless router. (See Here) (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=273526)

Lately, I have been considering swapping out my router. But I am interested in the new Apple Time Capsule which is also not on the list of compatible devices. So, I have no idea if that will help.

Anyone have this problem before. If I could use this thread to find a few ideas, that would be great.

From everything you describe and it appears you have narrowed it down to a Live Specific issue (in game). If you can hear each other in private chat, then I would think that eliminates either of your routers.

If it were me having this issue, i'd get us both go through our live settings together one by one and make sure something little isn't set somewhere on one side or the other.

To what Live setting do you refer?

There is a setting that restricts your chat to "friends only." However, in several games, if you have this turned on, you will not hear or be able to speak to anyone at all, including your friends. PGR4 and Gears of War are two games where this setting doesn't work right.

It turns out there is an option in the guide to mute a specific person. If you click on that person's gamertag you see options such as "Invite to game" or "Invite to Private Chat". Well, there is also an option called "mute". I thought this setting existed somewhere but did not know where to find it. Somehow, he had become muted. So, on mine it said "unmute". I clicked it and then was able to hear him loud and clear.
