View Full Version : is there a better router than the............
epicbloodline 03-01-08, 09:19 PM linksys: WRT54GS
that will support a PSP and 2 xbox360's and a home P.C. all running @ the same time ?
money isnt a object!
bkchurch 03-01-08, 09:39 PM Two of my friends have that router and it's fantastic. I say go for it. The thing I love about it is if you ever need a wireless receiver it's incredibly easy to flash the firmware and replace it with the firmware from one of the Buffalo routers and turn it into a very good wireless receiver. But it's a great router as well.
darklordjames 03-01-08, 09:53 PM My Linksys WRT54G has been a great little router. Same thing as the GS, without Speedbooster. I would make sure to find one that works with the custom firmwares, or just get the WRT54GL which is designed for custom firmware.

rahimlee54 03-02-08, 12:58 AM +1 for WRT54GL with tomato it is rock solid and you get QoS if you arent to lazy to set it up like me. The Egg usually has a rebate on them so they end up costing the same as the regular WRT54G.
Villanman 03-02-08, 08:59 AM D-Link 4500
It replaced my Linksys WRT54GS.
hummus23 03-02-08, 09:22 AM No. Don't bother with the Speedbooster.
I remember reading a review that showed that the 54GS had better range than the 54G, even in normal non-speedbooster mode. I have two 54GSs and am very happy with them.
eminence55 03-02-08, 11:05 AM the new wrt54G(versions 5,6,8)is not as good as previous versions. and they all have issues with p2p maxing it out and you must reboot it. the Gs is same router with higher speed/gain unlocked.
I had a v4 model that I used as is and then tried 2 different linux based firmwares. All three firmware would drop my connections to BF2. The HyperWRT was the best though.
I since tried a Belkin N1 ( 3 antenna model). It was more stable and didn't have to reboot quite as much.
I now using a Dlink Dir-655 it has been runing perfectly fine for 3-4 weeks now. Love the fact it has QoS ( belkin didn't have it). Although don't notice differnce really with QoS with 1M/5M ISP I am not often maxing it out. as I don't download much stuff or have many users( myself and my wife only).
All three are pretty solid routers, but I would caution the new ones that don't end in an L in it's name

assasyn 03-02-08, 01:52 PM I have that router and can't stand it.
joey791 03-02-08, 02:22 PM D-Link 4500
It replaced my Linksys WRT54GS.
Didnt the 4500 replace the DGL-4300?
If so I am running a Dlink DGL-4300 Gamers Lounge, cost me 100+ but the best gaming router I have ever had, if your going to make a purchase I would recommend it or the 4500(newer version I believe)

Router has worked great for me the year that I have had it. What problems have you had?
mishmosh 03-02-08, 09:50 PM D-Link DIR-655...the mother of all consumer routers.
datatrident 03-02-08, 10:09 PM I have the Dlink 4300. Works great with multiple xbox 360s behind it, all on XBL with multiple accounts and guests.

You know the deal
BigD5213 03-03-08, 04:19 AM I'm using the WRT54G router flashed with the DD-WRT v23 firmware, and it takes everything I am able to throw at it.(2 computers and a 360 hooked up to it) So, I'm able to download things on both computers and play on Live at the same time with no slow-down, and I haven't rebooted my router due to p2p issues in about a month.
leftkidney 03-03-08, 07:58 AM a router is a router
if you want a gaming router they do make some but for the most part it is designed for PC games because you can use jumbo packets which I am not sure if th e460 can do that
lmychajluk 03-03-08, 01:41 PM Get the WRT54GS and grab the the HyperWRT / Thibor firmware here:

lunaticpuma 03-03-08, 01:47 PM D-Link DGL-4300 (or 4500 if money is no object as you say).
I replace my Linksys with this. Best decision ever in my home networking life.

Why are you recommending a firmware that hasn't been updated in 2 years?
SSpectre 03-03-08, 06:30 PM I'd get the WRT54GL and put DD-WRT on it as soon as it came in.
dezertrat 03-03-08, 07:26 PM WRT54GL + Tomato - 50 pc's hooked up, QOS, Access Restriction and external logging. Nice and stable
ebackhus 03-03-08, 07:39 PM I have D-Link 624M with the 2.70 firmware. I have 4 PCs, 5 consoles, and 4 laptops connected to it.

for the same reason ATM's use OS/2, it works fine no need to fix it

Right, it's got a ton of features and it works. What more do you need? There's something to be said in that it hasn't needed an update in two years.
