Hello everyone,

So I've searched and read through a lot of the 360 HDMI threads. However, my situation is slightly different from most. So let me explain :).

I own a samsung ln-s4596D. As many of you probably know, the tv has quite a big of overscan. As most of you ALSO probably know, there was a firmware update released that eliminates overscan. The catch is that the source has to be 1080p or 1080i through HDMI. So the funky situation is my 360 can output 1080p (because it can upscale through hardware to 1080p), but I don't have an HDMI port.... so I can get a 1080p frame, but am missing the HDMI as the source to eliminate overscan.

So you may be asking, "Why does this idiot copybeaver guy just use vga since there's no overscan there?" The answer to that is that the picture settings availability for the tv using vga are crippled. It has been a while since I've used it, but I believe you can only change the red and green balance.

So that's my situation. Now I need a solution. Here's what I've discovered I could possibly do:

1. Sell my 360 (which is probably on the verge of death anyways... it IS a 360 after all :P ). If I do this, should I really go ebay or gamestop? I read the thread that gamestop will take your 360 without hard drive for 150 bucks. I don't think anyone on ebay will do that. So it looks like I could get the most money oddly enough... trading it in a gamestop. I also wouldn't have to deal with the backing up of hard drive since I'd get to keep it. So I'd be out 130 bucks + tax + hdmi cable cost to get hopefully a quieter (my 360 is loud as hell), more stable (uh... we'll see about that), unoverscanned picture (yay!) 360.

Another question relating to this... can I just use any ol' hdmi cable with the 360? I'd hate to have to pay out the butt for Microsoft's official proprietary crap hdmi cable. I'm cheap... I could just keep swapping the hdmi cable between my 360 and ps3 :D. Though I probably wouldn't do that...

2. Get some cheap crappy component->hdmi converter. As I've read in other threads, this can introduce lag. Furthermore, the conversion from analog->digital->analog sounds like it can produce some artifacts? I'm looking at the prices for the madcatz hdmi cable conversion kit... and I might as well just get a new 360 and trade my old one in! Are there any other cheaper options in this realm?

3. 1 and 2 was all I had :(. Any other options to eliminate overscan through HDMI for my tv?

Thanks for the help everyone!

not really without going into the service menu and tweaking, but you need to know what you are doing in there or possibly really mess things up.

I personally am leaning to the new 360 as in theory the new ones should be better.

and any HDMI will work ( might have to mod original cable for fiber optic if you need it). That is the only benefit of the official HDMI kit. no modding

I'm leaning towards trading in my crappy, ready to fall apart, loud as heck, chunky 360. I suppose 100 some bucks is worth the upgrade...

I have a Falcon and it isn't exactly quiet. It's quite audible while gaming (even in a cool place out in the open).

Just so you don't run into any surprises (was sort of mentioned before), if you need the optical audio out from the 360 to go to surround sound then you'll either have to buy MS's HDMI/audio pack or you'll have to bust the cover off the A/V cable it comes with so the HDMI cable will fit underneath it.

Try to see what you can get on craigslist. I managed to sell mine for $250.

lol you already know what you gotta do so why make a thread... you HAVE to sell your 360 and buy another if you want rid of the overscan issue...

You really managed to sell your 360 without a hard drive for 250 bucks? That's a crazy good deal you got there!

EDIT: I think I'm gonna go with a new 360... looks like I can get about 190 on ebay. I can toss out some games I don't want along with the system :P.

So before I jump in... attaching my old hard drive to a new 360 won't cause any problems right? The hard drive data doesn't have some sick attachment to the actual 360 hardware does it? I'd hate to have like my xbla games going nuts and what not.

no, but you will probably have to recover your XBL gamertag the first time you attempt to sign in on the new 360, because the HD will discover that the new 360 has a different serial number. it's done for security reasons. i had to recover mine when i moved the same HD around on 2 different 360's, for that exact reason, so i'm guessing the same thing will happen to you...
