Since new, I have only connected a JVC HM-DH5U DVHS recorder to a Pioneer Elite screen via firewire. But after two years of ownership, I decided to try the HDMI out - it was dead. JVC was very helpful on the phone and suggested a firmware update might fix the problem. The unit was returned to JVC Factory Service. Within a short time, they reported the issue was not firmware, and (hold your breath) $716.12 would restore the HDMI signal. I declined. JVC returned the unit with no service/shipping charges.
Has anyone experienced HDMI failure with the model?

Wow, $716 is probably more than you paid for the unit initially, isn't it? Did they say what the problem was?

Nathan:
Yes, the service charge is more than I paid for the unit - an indication JVC is not interested in DVHS repairs. This would be understandable if the selling price was under a hundred dollars, but this is a fairly expensive VCR.
There is a well shielded circuit board on which the Firewire and HDMI ports are mounted. I am quite sure this is the point of failure. While a blown capacitor could be the culprit, JVC elected to replace the entire board, rather than make a component level fix. :(

Of course it's a board replacement! Seems very few electronics companies replace broken smt's anymore.
James,
So far my 5U has been holding up, along with the 40k units.
You could always buy Nathans Marantz DVHS player...no hdmi, but all black case...shameless plug for Nathan:D

Tony,
OT here, but I've always been curious about you being a HD user since 1984?
Can you fill in the details? I'm not questioning if you did, just wondering what it was.
Thanks

In a service invoice, JVC indicated the failed part as:
LPA10254-01B - DIGI. PWB ASSY
Unit cost @ $555.31

PWB=printed wiring board
my guess just generic term for board swap. and a more specific failure of a component was not listed.
