Ok...after Snowkarvers build....I'm in. Mine has a twist. I have set aside a 13ft by 16ft space for the main theatre....since I had to compromise with the wife and the 'kids space'..I threw in an 11ft by 16ft space for a "Wii Wall"...I just picked up my Sharp LC46D82U flat panel for that...I just hung that this afternoon in a temporary spot over the fireplace upstairs...let the build begin...Pictures to follow. :) I may be a bit slower than some of you faster guys as this also includes a bathroom and separate bedroom/gym.

Ok....Time to start....been working hard so lets get'er done. The plan...well, I have a spot in the basement 13feet by 16feet...problem is the open wall - the planning committee won't let me close it up....still hurting over that one, because that means in-walls and ceiliing speakers....but we can hit that later.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a207/SWFunk/P1030527.jpg

Here's the back end...I had to hack out the wall and angle it to make keep my 16 feet....does that make sense? I think I'll scan the plan and post it...oh, on the floor I drew my center spot for the monster leather couch my wife ordered....its not a u shape, rather a gentle U...i.e. 22.5 degree bend rather than a 90degree... will get that picture too....

Here's the hackout a week after...a nice little 22.5 degree angle

Back shot....the length is 16 feet....will be 12 feet away from the screen...looking at 100 inch screen (Elite Screen 16:9) and either the Epson 1080UB or the Panasonic PTAE2000U.....

I've started the speaker wire, and bought some CAT5e....I'm trying to get some HDMI (15ft) and some component wire from Monoprice, but for some reason they are always out of stock....I'm thinking of running some RG6 for the subwoofer to three different spots...you never know about sub placement until last - - I have an old PSB Alpha Subsonic 5 that has alot of life left in her....just ran down to take a snappy...I also framed the front and rear....please be kind, I'm not a framer and will never claim to have that skill!!

I ran a dedicated 20 amp (yellow wire on the left) for the receivers and the projector.....I picked up some safe and sound insulation and will start that soon...tomorrow I plan to grab some drywall....found a place that has a sale $9.67/sheet...I'll steal one of my dad's cube vans and grab the max. 50 sheets.

Just did this to give you a visual.......I also just unloaded 50 sheets of drywall for the first go round...need to go get some sound proofing too....on the back wall there is an old rounded fridge going in (re-enameled red) and then I'm going to build some maple cabinets with a black or super dark stain beside it...this is also where the equipment will go, so I'm looking for some ventilation ideas too.....

Looking for my pictures of the wiring, but its almost done - so I went ahead and threw up a bunch of insulation...will work on that and hopefully start drywall on the weekend. I was stalled because of a gas line in the way....had to move it a whole 18 inches over......

here's my dads 'little shop' where I'll build a row of cabinets along the whole wall behind the couch - also where all the equipment will be going....I will make maple doors with his shapers, drum sander and square machine....then I'll stain them black.....thats a huge spray booth in the back....

I have the projector choice down to the Epson Home Cinema 1080UB or the Panasonic PT-AE2000U....the screen will be 100 inch and I have blocked the ceiling at the 11-13 foot mark to hang it....so far I've run 2 cat5e, 2 RG60, 1RG59, 2 HDMI (waiting on monoprice), 1 RGB component, and I ran a 20 amp line to run the projector and the receivers/dvdplayer etc...and a 15 amp to the front dedicated to the subs; I placed two spots up front for those but will only run one for the time being....I think I've decided on the JAMO in-walls....

So it looks like up front I'll have 3 of their 626K4 Dual 3-Way 6½ speakers and in the ceiling I plan on running two of the 6.521K4 3-Way 6½ speakers....I'm wired for 7.1, but I'm not convinced I need that just yet...again, it is wired for it.

Any thought on those speakers would be appreciated.....

So, I'm getting ready to order speakers - I'm going to beef it up and go with POLK AUDIO.....the screen is 100 inch and space up front measures 13 ft across and the total length of the theatre is 16feet (remember open on one side due to a veto by the planning commitee)...I'm lookin at the LC265i for front L and R .....for the centre channel I will get the LCiC speaker....now my dilemma. I have wired for ceiling speakers, specifically I was thinking about the LC80i's cause they can be aimed to the seating area - currently they are wired for just behind the seating area the same width apart as the fronts....OR...should I get the LC65i's and place them directly in hte wall behind the seating area (they would be about 4 feet from the seating) and space them the same width as the fronts (currently wired this way, but can easily be moved closer).... The room is small and these speakers should be awesome....my sub is a PSB 10inch LFE powered sub that goes in the front....... THOUGHTS???

MUD'NNNNN and TAPIN! At least its not me! Small change.....kinda like you Scott....I'm seriously moving towards the 2.40:1 screen....BUT I have to move my projector back a couple feet to get the throw ratio up above 1.3....I think I'll get the HTBrothers Anamorphic lens when I head to California in October....I just have to move the plug from the face of the bulkhead to under it ~ closer to the back wall, again no biggie.....Hey Smakovits....I have a wife who's like a dog on a bone.....she's hardcore no foolin around...its driving her nutz its taken me this long...plus I have to paint the shed, lay more grass in the yard, put the railing around the 27x13 deck, then block it off underneath cuz we bought a dog......no end in site.....!!! :)

I really want to go CIH, but I have issues with my throw.....I can get 13 feet back if I mount the projector under the bulkhead but I think I need at least a 1.6 throw...I'd like a min 96inch wide screen, but I'll get out the masking tape and see what happens....If I can make it work (with a big enough screen) then its a definit GO.

dyslexic
06-25-08, 07:24 PM
quick research shows that if I do a curved screen with 30' arc will help big time....

dyslexic
06-26-08, 12:25 AM
ok so I've calculated my throw ration wrong! This is good...I think; will crunch some numbers now :)

My problem was using the wide screen width rather than the 16:9 width.....it took a while for that to sink in.....correct me if I'm wrong,

a) 96 inch screen diag. is 84W X 47H for a 16:9 measurement of viewable screen....I have about 12 ft of throw.... therefore my throw ratio really is 144/84= 1.71

b) 100 inch diag is 87W X 49H for a 16:9 measurement of viewable screen....again, I have about 12 ft of throw, therefore my ratio here is 144/87 = 1.65

c) 92 inch diag is 80W X 45H for a 16:9 measurement of viewable screen; therefore my ratio here is 144/80 = 1.8

So based on my brutal math, and the fact that I'm in the 1.6 - 1.8 throw ratio range, I can get away with;

a) 2.37 x 47 = 111 inch screen; or
b) 2.37 x 49 = 116 inch screen; or
c) 2.37 x 45 = 106.65 inch screen
(width not diagonal here)

Based on my 13 feet across scenario and my seating being 11-12feet away, I think I'll stick to something a tad smaller - when in doubt, pick c. Maybe I'll round that up to a full 9 feet..... I'll be calling SMX to see how much that last screen will set me back; further I have to email Randy at HTBrothers so he doesn't think I'm on crack with my math I sent....d'oh!!

My $0.02.

I didn't want to drag sand downstairs either. Especially since my stage is designed to be removable should I ever want to change it, i.e. it is carpeted all the way underneath it to the back wall.

I did however go gonzo stuffing it with insulation. Sounds pretty dead to me and have noticed no ill effects that I can detect at least.

scottyb

I still think sand is over the top for an HT.
Yea it's probably the best but as Mr. Hamster says and I can attest to, insulation will work just fine.

I compromised on the sand... I did about 1/3 of my stage with sand and the rest with insulation. Since I have a fairly shallow stage, it only look about 5 50lb bags of play sand to do it. I basically filled the two most likely spots that my sub might be sitting on. :)

If you don't want to sand the whole stage, you could just sand the parts of the stage underneath where your speakers will stand. Like Jamis said, then you can stuff insulation in the rest of the stage.

carpet is ordered and coming approx first week in september, furnace cleaning guys coming this wednesday, ordered the leather sectional that is shaped like a crescent moon (I think you call it crescent moon) - instead of theatre seating it's a bit more cozy (costs more than the projector!!)...ordered cork flooring for the bathroom and the doors should show up by end of the week.....I was not happy with the ceiling and am still fart'n around with making the butt joints invisible.....I think I did it; I have the primer on and saw a couple of touchups I missed, but other than that were good to go. Once that carpet and baseboards are installed I'll start on the stage - simple squared off, no fancy curves - where the subs go I'll put sand in that part. We're going to disneyland in October where I'll swing by Home THeatre Brothers and get my anamorphic lens :)

dyslexic - looking nice! I like the Wii area you have set up. I never have enough floor space to have more than two people playing at once, so having a dedicated (or at least planned) area for it is a great idea!
Are you keeping the walls white in the theater room or are you going to color them differently or treat them acoustically?

Hey Thanks, the Wii area is working out better than anticipated already! The screen wall will be black and the walls will stay the same as they are now...sortof a light grey/green...can't tell in the snaps...I do plan on wall treatments, but not for a while. I was reminded today why I need the HT.

1. Tickets for a family of four = $50.00
2. Popcorn/Pop = $20.00
3. Chairs getting kicked = FREE
4. Annoying kid talking beside you = FREE
5. Getting up to pee with no pause = FREE

WOW! Great Projector! My wife is also impressed, this is goooood. First movie was CARS. Now I have to figure out my settings and make the screen. I was only able to get the projector 12ft 3 inches so my 120inch is a bit smaller....needed the room for air circulation and the plug sticks straight out rather than the 90 degree that I was hoping for. The screen using the Behr Silver Screen is working really good (two coats does fine) as a temporary solution til it warms up.....I did get my samples from Seymour AV as I was thinking about that as a screen now too....the laminate thing is still on my mind, but the prices of Seymour AV is making me seriously consider a possible accoustic screen....problem is that the distance between the speaker and the screen is supposed to be around 10 inches (or so I've read) - that may not be possible in my small room.....

I have 4" between my speakers and Seymour AT screen material, some people as little as 2" with no problems. I had a Carada BW screen before my acoustically transparent screen, and a diy Wilsonart laminate screen before that. I can highly recommend the Seymour (Phiefer) screen material.

Is this not the original material used by SmX? I believe I read that the SmX screens only needed a few inches between it and the speaker.

Yes, the Phiefer Shearweave material. It can be placed very close to the speakers.

if I can get away with 2 inches, that'd be fantastic; it would clear the front of any speakers and give me some great sound. Then I'd switch to the Niles Audio Stage front IW2650LCR's with a new 12 inch SVS sub and then done.

Alrighty then - been having too much fun with the projector and am guilty of being a slack@$$. So - did a couple things.

1) Moved projector back to increase throw ratio (future anamorphic lens)
2) Increased screen to 2.37 aspect ratio; viewable screen will be 115inches wide by 48.5 tall.
2) Ordered me some Shearweave 4500 to build accoustic screen
3) Ordered some Niles Audio IW2670s for LCRs
4) Bought some black velvet to cover the frame I just built.
5) Bought the wife a new bbq.....well for me but who keeps score. :p

This should keep me going for a little bit.

Did a quick paint as my screen material will be here in 3 weeks as the supplier is out of stock. Also, my speakers are here and I just need to arrange pickup. :D

QUICK EDIT - I upgraded my speakers to NILES PROSOUND IW2670's and my wife said they've arrived:

Well, I hooked em up and WOW. Love them. First disc to go in Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Music Hall [Blu-ray]. Sounds FANTASTIC. I do have my sub with them but if you don't have a sub (IMHO) then get one. I threw in some Transporter, Underworld and a couple other titles to hear them out and I'm loving them. My wife even mentioned (about 20min ago) about how she can really hear more sounds than my old PSB's. Anyhow, definitly a speaker that hasnt had any coverage but should.

Very slick! Have you had a chance to test the speakers yet? If so, how do they sound?

Just picked up a Marantz MA500 monoblock and hooked up the bass shakers...I also added an FMOD crossover (50hz low pass) so they don't shake everytime some bass shows up....they work great...now I just need to finish the stage, and get some bass traps made....oh, and now I want the new OPPO......

Equipment Recap:

Panasonic AE3000
PS3 for Blueray
Onkyo 876 receiver
2-Axiom QS8's for surround
3-Niles Audio In Walls IW2670s for fronts
DIY 2.37 Shearweave 4500 accoustic screen (115 inches wide)
Marantz MA500 monoblock - 2 Aura Pro bass shakers cross'd over at 50hz
10 inch PSB Sub
APPLE TV

Wanted:
SVS PB12-NSD subwoofer
OPPO BD-83
HT Computer

For that kind of $$ you may want to consider building a MaelstromX 18" LLT or sealed design

http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?products_id=681

Even if you had to pay a carpenter to put it together it would cost less and outperform that SVS sub

something to consider maybe

Back on the wagon.....made a stage and started the velvet walls - left side done, right side has the frame (shown).

ok....I'm also repainting the grey/green walls a waaaay darker color....stage will be black carpet.....I've pulled down the horrible looking AV stand and am visiting my dads shop to build book cases (for the upstairs) and then to make a row of cabinets behind that couch - just deep enough to sit the equipment in/on (will have granite top in black).....

I did order an in-wall subwoofer to keep with the in-wall theme....I'm happy with the Niles in walls and the sub will be Def Tech's IW1010 and 600 amp - it will hopefully go below in the middle of the screen, but I will test different spots....I've read all the arguments on in-walls blahblahblah versus 'the box', but just don't have the room or the wife approval....plus with kids this will be outta side outta mind......hope no rattles, but I did screw the crap outta the front wall.

Easy install. Amp is just as heavy as the Onkyo. Added about 40 screws to the front wall to stop the vibration when it really went deep.......easy install, I think people should seriously consider this if they need to please the wife....people who call foul on in-walls have just never heard them......

oh, and don't forget about placement. I found a great spot in the corner - and I found that the golden rule of "never place it in the center of the room" is totally right. hmmmm, wouldnt mind a second one on the other side......paid too much already (only down side).
