First as I break my lurker status I want to thank all of those that have shared their builds.
My build:
I converted a 16x28 unfinished second story room over the master into my HT. It in the finishing stages now and I have chosen a deco/mid-century style.
The walls and ceiling boarded and the ceiling is getting Anderson "tin stamp" look tile installed now.
I chose to use the dormer as my screen wall. There is an 109" electric screen mounted above the ceiling a few inches from the wall. I had extra blackout added to the top of the screen so the screen starts well over a foot from the ceiling when extended. I chose this route to preserve the window behind the screen for resale purposes. I figure If all else fails I'll plug it and put GOM over it. I have fabricmate track and GOM fabric (Anchorage onyx, goose, and cappuccino) awaiting installation.
Curently there is a row of four Berkline 99s. I plan on adding two more end chairs and having two rows of three. With a riser bar I figure I'll have seating for ten.
My delima:
I would like to wrap large decorative white crown and baseboards around the room in the deco style. I even think I'll add a deco "medallion" to the crown centered on the screen.
Another idea would be to end the crown on the sides of the dormer and have an valance around the screen in the deco or mid century style.
I fear I may not like the white trim above the screen.
I'm looking for some guidance/ideas from you guys.
Here is my first stab using Sketch up:

Ok before I get comments...the coke machine is a vendo 81 from the 50's, the candy machine is from the 40's and the popper is the Gold Medal deco model with matching base.

I don't know if I haven't given enough information or if I need to clarify what I'm asking.
I just want to know how to finish out the dormer. I haven't seen anyone use a dormer as their screen wall. Someone must have some suggestions for trimming it out in deco style.
Here are a few photos of the build to date:

You can see the fabric, track and tiles over in the corner waiting to be installed.

Yes I will paint the entire ceiling black. I started painting the tiles while I waited for the adhesive to come in.

You can see the challenge of wrapping molding around these corners. Also note the wall receptacles bumped out with trackmate track and extension rings. It was really easy.

This is a view from the second row. The silver foam board is covering a double window. I plan on wrapping it in the black fabric with no molding and installing black mini blinds.

I mounted the screen above the ceiling. The idea is to trim out the board like a valance.

Here are the colors I picked for the walls.

Here is my idea for concessions.

I like how this entertainment center has the added deco keystone medallion in the center. I was thinking about using it centered over the screen.
Ok, Let's here your ideas on how I could finish my dormer screen wall.

I got inspired from this picture.

Here is a poor sketch to show my idea. I think I’ll paint the trim gloss black not the way it is depicted in the sketch. Remember I still have to paint out the rest of the ceiling.

The crown has a similar profile to this.

I also found the following picture as inspiration. I like the trim just above the transom window. I think I could recreate it by streaching it across the top of the screen. I also like the pilasters flanking the doorway. I have to figure a way to make something similar for columns. Maybe I could also add deco details to the slopped walls simular to the panels on each side of the door.

Which way would you guys go?

I am really digging the bottom picture. I really like what you are doing. It is going to look great when it is completed. Very cool..

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I finished tiling the ceiling last night. Now I need to tackle the screen wall.
While I’m deciding on the trim I am thinking about a stage because the HT is directly over the Master suite. I did use 60# tar paper under the wood floor to help deaden the sound. It made a big difference. I think a few inches of sand will help out even more. If I framed out using a 2x4 (2” high) with would there be enough mass to make a substantial difference?

here is an interesting photo I stole some time ago and saved away. May give you some ideas for columns and walls.

Big,
Thanks for sharing the photo. I see several ideas. Love the soffit. I had wanted to build one as a bass trap but hadn't seen one that fit the room until now.
I also like how he painted the baseboards black and used stained baseboards around the columns.
The most inspiring thing in the photo is the screen on the walls between the columns. I would like to incorporate those on the sloped sides of the dormer (screen wall).
Wow, I still have a lot of work ahead. :(

Here are the pilasters that I am thinking of using on the sides of the screen wall. I think it needs something across the top. Should I make a fluted beam and use rosettes for the corners?

Dave,
I have alot of pictures of Art Deco styles, unfortuantly most of them are in books that I have collected over the years. I am a sucker for Art Deco styling.:)
Here is a shot of the stag theater at Skywalker Ranch that may give you some ideas

Here some more photos for inspiration

This type of styling is very easy to recreate, MDF is your friend here :), it can be cut, stacked and routed to make just about any form you want.
Looks like you and I have similar taste in the antique vending machines as well, I have an old 51 cavalier Coke machine like yours, I also have a old stoner candy machine about the same size as yours, pretty cool stuff!

Thanks for sharing the pics. Feel free to pm a title or isbn# if you think I should check out a book or two. I really like the soffit and trim in your picture. I have been considering adding a soffit but think the 8' ceilings make it a tight fit. I would like to use them as bass blockers. Anyone else with 8' ceilings and a soffit feel free to pipe in. I am teetering with the idea and need to make a decision.

This just posted on the bay today. I wish I had the cash to win the auction but as you could guess by my name I should hold off. I bet it would look good next to your Cretors popcorn popper. :)
