I'm looking for input from anyone who has seen it compared to a teranex mini, or Toshiba HD-A35. For instance, when we upconvert BetaSP through the teranex it looks...well, bad. No real shocker there, but I was surprised to see the amount of ringing it added. And I swear it adds grain to cover its tracks too...
On a related note, I just recently picked up an HD-A35 for home and again--ringing. Certainly not terrible, but definitely there. Both these units have been praised for their upconversion prowess (in their own right). Would a Lumagen HDQ fare better? I've seen the radiance test chart--impressive but I'm wondering about the HDQ and actual program material.
Anyone seen any combination of the above and care to compare? Thanks!

I own a toshiba 35 and the radiance. For SD content, I use an OPPO with 480i via HDMI out to the Radiance. there is no comparison between the OPPO/radiance combo and the toshiba 35. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of ringing on most problem titles vs the Toshiba (or prior to the DVDO VP50). I have still found some problem titles like Evan Almighty's SD dvd, but 95% of the titles with the Radiance in the loop, I do not see the nasty ringing that I were problems with other components.

Thanks for the input. I have an oppo 970hd for future 480i ouput (but now i learn of an HDMI bug over 480i...*sigh*). How much of the difference is in the Radiance vs. the HDQ I wonder?
In terms of ringing alone the HDQ is noticeably better than the '35.
And the HDQ is easily equal - if not superior - to the '35 overall in the 480 > 1080i or 1080p processing, all things considered.
How much? Hard to quantify - and dependent upon your display source and screen.
Based upon my time-limited experience to my new Radiance it is visibly better than the HDQ in this regard, mainly in deinterlacing and scaling video to 1080p. Even without the superior deinterlacing the color purity and dynamics are better than the HDQ. That quality difference will be highly dependent upon your setup.
And the HDQ is no small competition, either. Something had to be second. ;)

Ive been trying to convince the VP manufactures to add a steep notch filter at the frequency where the ringing takes place. The upper end Teranex has this and once you see it in action you will think its the best thing sense sliced bread.

However a steep notch filter is extremely difficult to design - be it analog or digital. That's why only the highest end boxes have it. The sharper the skirts of a filter's response, the more likely it is to ring. A notch filter with the limited processing power in these sub $5K consumer scalers would only make the problem worse.
