I painted my ceiling black yesterday. I had two coats of gray Glidden gripper primer on the ceiling before I started. I used Pittsburgh Paints Speedhide flat black, number 6-753 (It's a commercial grade paint designed for theaters and photo darkrooms).

After two coats, the ceiling looks really good and it's very black. Are there any advantages to adding a third coat to the ceiling? The paint is reasonably priced and it covers well so it wouldn't take much time or extra money to add a third coat.

Let me know what you think.

It's all up to you, Dave. If it looks like it needs a third coat to you, put one on. If it looks great after 2 coats, then stop.

If you need to ask, then put on a third. If it looks great, then no need to ask, no need for a 3rd :D

To put it another way, same as the above post?

I don't think anybody would do an extra coat just for good measure.

I didn't know if there were advantages to a third coat of paint such as wear or cleanability - regardless of how it looks with two coats.

Your ceiling should get much wear or need to be cleaned that often. Most black ceiling I've seen that look bad, look bad because of over rolling or back rolling and it not looking uniform. I think if it looks great to you, leave it alone.

Alternatively, I noticed mine got a few smudges as I installed rope light ... and at that point I repainted again, but once it is up, it isn't like a wall and has constant risk of somone touching it.

bigDvette,

My ceiling is pretty easy to touch when you stand on the riser...
