This may have been asked before, but I have searched for it and have not found it. Can anyone tell me what the VR in the Sony VPH-70VR stands for? I asked Curt Palme and he did not know.
Thanks,
David

Fast green phosphor
Not as bright
Optimized to run at high refresh rastes for stereo projections

Does that mean that I should stay away from a VR version for HT use?
Thanks,
David

The thing I remember about the VR from many years ago was that it has better lenses but rare as hen's teeth. The trick was to put the VR lenses on a regular G70, one of the few "tweaks" you could do to the Sony. Hopefully Cliff responds, he was the one who had it.

Given that description, how would this projector perform in a regular HT application with a flat screen?

Thanks,
David

:D What's up big dog!!!!!!

The VR in G70 VR stands for Virtual Reality. It has special lenses and fast retrace phosphor. The lenses are KICK ASS and there are only 2 8" sets I've ever seen that do a good 1080P and that is the G70VR and XG1352LC with the SAME lenses and fast retrace phosphor green tube. I owned both. The XG is Gary Murrells now.

The VR is every bit as bright as the G70.

I'll look and see if I can dig up the pictures........

Cliff,

Do you think a standard G70 could do good (better) 1080p if these lenses were used in a retrofit, or do the tubes make the bigger difference.

there's no way a fast Phosphored Green tube (and yes it's only the green) can increase the resolution of a given PJ.

It allows you to run faster refresh rate.
HD-134 is desined to be able to focus on curved screen as well.
These lens are tack sharp.

Considering the size of these monsters they are really sharp.
My XG competes extremly well in sharpness with my Optoma hd7300.
But the detail is even better is static shots. Not kidding!:) Obviously that is 720p vs 1080i. So take it with a grain of salt.:)

Cliff stated correctly as he usually does. I too owned a XG1352LC VR at one time. After Ken Whitcomb calibrated it I was floored. I would have never sold the unit, but I found a Sony G90 at a good rate. Of course I've now turned to the Light side?? I have the JVC RS1 now.

Good to know that Ken has worked one of these XG's.
I am happy with my own set up but I might have him to dial it in.

Would the VR len's fit a 12XXX series as they are both 8" tubes

The Reverend of Raster is The Master of XG. He LOVES NEC. It's one of his favorites next to the G90. :D:cool:;)

XG's Rock. Especially LC.

No.

Only a G70 or XG LC...and possibly a 8" LC Barco, but you'd need donor C elements.

A 12xx (excluding the 1292, which has HD-10s) is air coupled, not liquid coupled. The optic setup is completely different.

I bought a set of the VR lenses from Gary last year for my G70. Yup they ARE sweeeeeeeeet. The corner focus was what I was most stoked about. I only run 1080i though.....but no one who has ever watched movies here complains about the image.

I don't see any drawbacks in using a VR G70 in a theater setup!

As far as the Green is concerned worse comes to worse you can always swap it for a non fast refreshed one.

And yes those lenses are awesome!!!

Mark if yours was a VR it would have said VR next to the G70 logo!

Your raves about them Cliff, are the reason I jumped on them when they were posted over at Videogon. I LOVE THEM. Besides just looking real cool, the corner focus was definitely easier to nail down. It may just be my wishful thinking, but the picture seems crisper too. I really don't have any desire to A B the difference though. It's such a PITA

Naw man. My PJ isn't a VR, my lenses are. I thought there was a thread at Curts' place about the different types of lenses. The rare as hens teeth comment is no exaggeration either. Search the site for talk of the elusive VR lenses.
