Hello,

I'm looking for a High Def HD recorder.

Specifically, for a device that will take a Component input from my HD cable box, and then record in High Def.

Does such a beast exist? I've been looking at some recorders but only found ones with Composite and S-Video inputs.

Thanks!

You should be able to do that with this via IEEE 1394:

If money is no object, there are a couple of devices that fit the bill. I think one of them is called the Pegasus.

If money tighther, you might want to wait for the Hauppauge HD-PVR. It's supposed to be coming out in April/May and retail for $250. As with the Pegasus, you'll need a computer as it is not a stand-alone device.

There are few threads here discussing the Hauppauge unit.

Thanks for the reply. I'm strictly looking for a set top box. As the guy showed above, I'm going to check and see if my digital receiver has Firewire. If so, I wonder if there is a hard drive version of the device he posted. (Not too interested in tapes)

Is there a hard disk version?

The Mitsubishi HD-6000 supposedly can record HD to its hard drive via IEEE-1394 (Firewire).

The Gefen HD-PVR and Cypress CHD-PVR1 can record HD to their hard drives via YPbPr (analog component).

There really isn't a set top stand alone DVD recorder that can record in HD in this country. They exist in Japan and will eventually be available here.

I record HD programs from my Comcast DCH3416 via FireWire on my MacMini using the capture programs discussed in this forum.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=386740

Play them on my HDTV in beautiful 1080P. And once on the Mac they can be burned onto DVD using Toast or other burning software, copied to other computers over the internet, etc. I have my network set up so that I can log into the Mini over the internet, program a recording to the hard drive (using the iRecord utility to change the channel and start at the desired time), then download it over the internet and watch it anywhere when it's done.

The only shortcoming is that only non-DRM channels (such as local networks HD channels, ESPN and some others) can be copied, most cable channels cannot and can only be recorded and viewed from a Comcast box.

I guess live TV will HDCP pretty soon if everybody is making HD copies of television programs. The exact reasons that the Hollywood pictures studios set HDCP onto the discs, so people can't make hundreds of copies that are as good as an original.

Please links to these "exist in japan" standalone DVD recorders, and not just drool.
And I'm not talkin about the stuff with built in japan-only terrestrial/satellite tuners that re-encode to H264 and write to HD-DVD/BD-R, or those that are strictly HDD-only recorders with no way to copy material off, I'm talking about a device that this thread mentions, that is with HDMI/component input and HDD/external media output.
