View Full Version : Games that sucked that you loved
benjamin-benjami 03-04-08, 09:56 AM What games did you love that are universally accepted as sucking...
for me it was rise of the robots on PC, i spent countless hours on that game beating it over and over again.....outside of that i love point and click games like monkey island that have died off because i have been told that i am the only person that plays those games.......so what games for you..
Bomberman: Act Zero  I'll admit it!
jremy510 03-04-08, 10:04 AM Monkey Island and other point-and-click adventure games DID NOT suck. They just kind of died out as a genre as game technology evolved.
Ultima 8 was the first top-down RPG I ever played, and therefore I loved it. Even though looking back and reading reviews of it written at the time, I realize now that it was an incredibly bad game.
SKoprowski 03-04-08, 10:05 AM I really enjoy Shadworun..... and still do.
Pantie Bandit 03-04-08, 10:15 AM Cool-Spot for the SNES (yes, the game featuring the 7-Up Logo).
I was a tool, what can I say?
scottro 03-04-08, 10:25 AM LOL I loved Cool Spot!
Thoraudio 03-04-08, 10:26 AM Pac-man for the Atari 2600.
An absolutely horrible game that I played till I wore out my joystick.
Most of the rest of the free world hated Enter the Matrix. It had more than a few problems, especially the horrid driving and flying sequences, but the bullet-time combat and canonical integration into the Matrix universe was really well-done. There was a great sequence when you're running away from an Agent, making super-jumps around a construction site, that remains one of my favorites in all gaming.
luigionlsd 03-04-08, 10:43 AM Regardless of having Perfect Dark Zero, PGR3 and GRAW (2 years ago this weekend) the first weekend of owning my 360, I still concentrated on playing Kameo from start to finish. BTW, GRAW was crap, and totally not worth the hype :p
CHAVAN30 03-04-08, 10:45 AM Soldier of Fortune: Payback
sirjonsnow 03-04-08, 10:50 AM The original Mario Bros. on Atari, where you were in a room full of pipes spitting out kupas and other monsters like those icicle things. Atari had the deal where you could mail in photos for badges or something, so I was going to take a pic at 1 million points - turns out that game resets after 999,999 and counts up again from 0.
Most original video games kind of tick me off now - they all either cap out at a certain difficulty and then go on forever (Bump 'n Jump, Tapper, arcade Gauntlet) or they just get harder to the point of impossibity (River Raid). They almost never had an ending, the only really old games I can think of with an "end" are Pitfall and Pitfall 2.
properbostonian 03-04-08, 10:51 AM Brute Force on Xbox. Universally panned but I thought it was pretty good. :)
Replicant Nexus6 03-04-08, 10:59 AM I really enjoy Shadworun..... and still do.
Forgot all about Shadowrun. Do you still find player servers easily? I figured by now, no one would be lpaying this. Total lack of downloadable content too, right? I was very dissapointed.
Billbofet 03-04-08, 11:06 AM Shadowrun was my favorite game last summer. If people are still playing, I may have to pick it up again.
I also love Perfect Dark Zero even though everyone bitched about it. So many options you could do whatever you wanted in the game.
That is awesome that someone else remembers the atari patches I had like 3 of them. The one I remember most was something like spider fighter.
sirjonsnow 03-04-08, 11:34 AM How about Decathlon for Atari.
I actually played my Atari games on a Colecovision with the adapter. For Decathlon you could turn the controller sideways and because Coleco had the stubby knob instead of a stick you could move it back and forth real quick. Only game that ever gave me blisters LOL
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/bjursca/588372_40230_front.jpg
My friends and I used to play this almost everyday. The game didn't even include golfers...just a top-down view of a ball and lots o' green. :D
LOL @ Cool Spot....that was fun. This is a tough question, Im really having to think about it! As a kid I pretty much liked anything enough to play it.
2panther 03-04-08, 11:37 AM Conflict: Desert Storm
bland graphics, it had horrible controls, and even worse AI for the 4 man fire team you were part of. That said, it has to be one of the most fun games I've EVER played COOP with a buddy of mine. We ran through the entire campaign together and had a blast. You could share ammo, medical kits and whatever weapons you picked up which made for some cool fire fights.
me: %*!#$ I'm on my last mag!
buddy: I've got extra, cover me and I'll drop some at your feet!
good times! I purchased Conflict: Vietnam hoping it would give us the same kind of fun but we were severely disappointed.
number1laing 03-04-08, 11:47 AM I like stuff like this. Gaming is too hit driven, it's like everyone's favorite games are exactly the same.
I really enjoy Shadworun..... and still do.
Shadowrun doesn't suck, though. The gameplay mechanics are very solid. It was criticized because it (A) made no use of the license, (B) had a dearth of content, and (C) was sold at full price. None of these things has anything to do with the quality of the game and videogame reviewers lost sight of this.
benjamin-benjami 03-04-08, 01:00 PM The original Mario Bros. on Atari, where you were in a room full of pipes spitting out kupas and other monsters like those icicle things. Atari had the deal where you could mail in photos for badges or something, so I was going to take a pic at 1 million points - turns out that game resets after 999,999 and counts up again from 0.

bump n jump is one of the greatest games ever....
sirjonsnow 03-04-08, 01:14 PM Oh I loved Bump 'n Jump, I was just commenting on how old arcade games didn't have endings.
maximuslcd 03-04-08, 01:31 PM Barbies wild horse adventures.....
J/K
For this gen console I would have to say Two Worlds
jasonstiller 03-04-08, 01:31 PM the entire need for speed series since underground 1
SuperGrafx 03-04-08, 02:27 PM I thought Kameo was a great title, particularly for the 360's launch.
Lots to see and do, but not overly long where you'd get bored of it right away.
whiskey > work 03-04-08, 02:31 PM let's go through systems of the games I played that sucked that I enjoyed
Atari: Raiders of the Lost arc (besides et, the most frustrating game ever),
NES: Karnov, Home Alone, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, 3d World Runner, The 3 stooges
SNES: can't remember
360: Root Beer Tapper
Arcade: Toobin
Billbofet 03-04-08, 02:47 PM I couldn't get enough of King's Field back on the PS1. It was almost universally panned, but there was just something so unique and creepy about it. I threw it in about a month ago and it still has somewhat held up. I just can't get used to the controls now after years of dual analog sticks.
This would be a great next-gen franchise to remake for the 17 of us that would buy it :D
Just a weird concept to begin with......but still pumped a ton of quarters into it for some reason.

So was Brute Force I loved
and then for xbox thier was Shenmue 2 I would say shenmue 1 but it had a pretty big following on the dreamcast.
Daekwan 03-04-08, 03:23 PM Solitare on Windows.. all the way back since Windows 3.11.
Matter of fact im going to play right now on my laptop.
Shizelbs 03-04-08, 03:38 PM I think I'm the one person that played Two Worlds for more than two minutes.

guyutemsg 03-04-08, 03:58 PM Holy crap!!! I played Goonies for months!!!! Thanks for that flashback!!
I could never figure that game out.
Anyone play Adventures or Tom Sawyer for NES?
That was bad but fun. Oh and Jaws for NES too, that stunk but I always played it.
sirjonsnow 03-04-08, 03:59 PM no Custer's Revenge fans?
I hope not.
Ages ago, I bought a video card that came with a game called Outlaws. It wasn't great but it was the first Wild West FPS I'd ever played so I liked it.

The others not so much.

jremy510 03-04-08, 04:05 PM I loved Red Dead Revolver for PS2...it didn't really suck but it seems like it was very unpopular.

oo7evan 03-04-08, 05:23 PM Turok Evolution for PS2.
I know the flying levels sucked BIG TIME. But I loved the original N64 games, so I stuck with it when it went to the PS2. Tried the demo for the 360 Turok, wasn't very impressed.
DerekinMerrick 03-04-08, 05:33 PM This is nothing like goonies 2

Mine has to be Blade II on Xbox. It had horrible voice acting and it was hilarious to hear Blade's one liners. I don't know why but that game was so fun to me.
Stangs55 03-04-08, 06:16 PM I really enjoy Shadworun..... and still do.
Me too!
HDTV-NUT 03-04-08, 06:42 PM Barbies wild horse adventures.....
hahaha, that is funny right there.
I can't remember which one, but it was twisted metal 3 or 4 where you could play as calypso in a semi truck that had like a nuke on the back lol. I would turn on God mode and play for hours just blowing everyone up... good times.
Ineedausername 03-04-08, 06:45 PM Solitare on Windows.. all the way back since Windows 3.11.
Matter of fact im going to play right now on my laptop.
haha, I've been playing games since pong and I still play Solitare on Windows. Weird.
YellowLight 03-04-08, 07:20 PM How about Decathlon for Atari.
I played Decathlon on PC, around 84 or so. I remember you ran by alternatingly pushing two keys for the legs. Blisters is right! :D
My favorite universally panned game was Marauder on the Apple ][... this was around 82 or 83.
Pharcyde23 03-04-08, 07:49 PM Carmageddon - PC
Mad Dog McCree - PC
Spent lots of time with both.
Morkeleb 03-04-08, 08:28 PM Azurik for the xbox. I thought it was great all around but never heard much talk of it.

chadly25 03-04-08, 08:35 PM EDF....Earth Defense Force 2017
mproper 03-04-08, 08:38 PM Ok, I don't know if I remember this correctly, but I played through ET for Atari and didn't think it was that bad (I was like 8-10 at the time). It was years later that I became aware that it was pretty much universally despised.
I definitely don't remember thinking it sucked. I'm sure it does though, but through my faded, fuzzy memories through the eyes of a child from 25 years ago, I seem to remember liking it.
perpetual 03-04-08, 08:55 PM Conflict: Desert Storm

Brute Force on Xbox. Universally panned but I thought it was pretty good. :)
My friends and I really loved these two games. I had no idea that they universally suck. Four player co-op on those two games was a blast. I really miss games like these.
BTW, Project Eden for the PS2 was another one we liked, but I'm pretty sure it universally sucked as well.
EDF....Earth Defense Force 2017
YES! I love EDF! Still working on beating it.
Chase117 03-04-08, 09:08 PM Azurik for the xbox. I thought it was great all around but never heard much talk of it.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/a/azurikriseofperathia/details.page/
Hahaha you're kidding right? I thought that was universally known as the worst game on Xbox. I think OXM gave free copies of that game to their letters of the month as a joke.
Anyways I would say Shadowrun. That was seriously an amazing game I can't believe it got such a bad reputation it's one of the most balanced online shooters ever and it actually took skill:eek: maybe that's why everyone hated it.
There was also this game on xbox called Enclave that I thought was a blast but I don't think anybody but me bought it haha.
jolietconvict 03-04-08, 09:24 PM Most of the rest of the free world hated Enter the Matrix. Totally agree. The driving and flying sequences did almost sink the game for me. The bullet time was awesome though. Are any of the other Matrix games any good?
Leo_Ames 03-04-08, 09:52 PM Here's a few of mine that come to mind.
Miniature Golf/Arcade Golf (Atari 2600)
Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. (Atari 2600)
Word Zapper (Atari 2600)
Pole Position II (Atari 7800, a great port of a arcade classic that didn't get the praise it deserved due to Atari delaying it and the 7800 for 2 years due to market conditions until 1986, when it was overshadowed by the NES)
Super Off-Road: The Baja (SuperNes)
Half-Life 2 (Xbox, this is somewhat of a stretch, but it got attacked by many people for frame rate issues, that I barely ever noticed and which never made it unplayable, except for a freeze at the elevator scene in the last 5 minutes of the game)
Sega Classics Collection (PS2, Universally panned by critics, but the redone version of Outrun was great, and it had several other quality titles such as Fantasy Zone).
New Rally-X (Xbox Live Arcade, people didn't treat this arcade classic very fair upon release, though it was overpriced I'll admit)
E.T. was mostly attacked by people that never played the game. Those that played it and gave it any attention recognized that it was a decent game, a solid C title that was largely a disappointment because a A title was expected out of it.
Pac-man for the Atari 2600.
An absolutely horrible game that I played till I wore out my joystick.
Its only horrible if you expected arcade Pac-Man. Replace the characters and you'd have a game that's fondly remembered, instead its remembered for being a disappointment for those that expected a home rendition of Pac-Man.
RC Pro-Am.
R.C. Pro-Am was a very popular title that got a lot of praise, doesn't fit the criteria of this list.
The original Mario Bros. on Atari, where you were in a room full of pipes spitting out kupas and other monsters like those icicle things.
I don't remember the 2600 port of Mario Bros. being attacked, seemed to me like a decent port, and about as close as you could've hoped for on that hardware. Activision was the one that did the patches though, I don't think Atari did it for anything including Mario Bros.
There are a lot of Atari 2600 titles and games for other systems back then that had endings, though for most the allure was for playing for high scores. River Raid sort of has an ending, with practice you can flip the score and have the score become !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, which is quite possible with a lot of practice. I thought Gauntlet had a ending, or perhaps I'm thinking of the NES port? I love Bump 'N' Jump and Tapper btw.
House of the Dead 1 and 2. Horrible graphics and even MORE horrible voice acting.
Fun as hell to play!
Those two games are hardly universally accepted as sucking, your far from alone in thinking that they were fun, which is why there's several in the series and games still being produced for the franchise. They don't qualify, imo.
Solitare on Windows.. all the way back since Windows 3.11.
Matter of fact im going to play right now on my laptop.
Again, who hates on this?

assasyn 03-04-08, 09:55 PM RC Pro-Am.
blazin_it_alwyz 03-04-08, 10:18 PM Shadowrun really doesn't qualify as a sucky game. Most review sites gave it a medium score not because the game sucked, but because lack of content. The thing is, the content it does have is top class, as opposed to the 15+ maps on Rainbow Six Vegas, which only 3 or 4 are really played so you have to look at it like that. It's also still a real popular game, I just bought it.
I have to admit, I have always like the Dynasty Warrior series. I know it sucks, but I like going through and destroying waves of enemies and improving my skills the whole time, I loved it the first time I played it.
I also like The Pokemon Trading Card Game on the Gameboy, that game was freakin awesome.
The Dark Cloud series I don't know what people think of, but I liked the Dark Cloud series too.

A lot of people have the mindset that if it's old then it's not all that great.
I still hate Joust for nes. Even if it was loved or not.. I cringe when I think about renting that game when I was younger.
Leo_Ames 03-04-08, 10:46 PM I'm not sure how well the NES port of Joust turned out, but if it was made by the same developers that brought Defender to the NES, another Williams arcade classic, I'm not shocked that it sucked.

The first survival horror game so to speak that I've ever played. I must've been 3 or 4 but I remember it being difficult to get out of a house and what made it even more nerve wracking was when it read Jason is in the house.
darklordjames 03-05-08, 02:57 AM Most recently? 24: The Game.
It was pretty much panned in reviews, and yes, the driving sections were horrible, but it did a really good job of capturing the feel of the show. The production values were top notch, it was no slouch graphicly, and it had a cover system that worked! It averaged 64% in reviews, but the quality of the game really is more in the 75% range, and in the 80% range for fans of the show.
Maybe the reviewers were expecting something different, or the review copies were horribly buggy? I don't know. :)
Edit: Looking at the review aggregators, users rate the game in the 77% range. It seems to just be one of those games that reviewers and users just could not agree on.
Big Brad 03-05-08, 03:35 AM Didn't really get started until the Genesis/SNES era. I did received a Nintendo when I was around 5, but I don't remember playing it much. I was an outdoorsy type of kid. Anyway... Here are my fond memories that people say sucked:
Genesis:
Comix Zone
Haunting: Starring Polterguy
SNES:
Mortal Kombat 1 (enjoyed the alternate less bloody fatalities)
Cool Spot
Sega CD:
Double Switch
Night Trap
Ground Zero Texas
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Sewer Shark
The Adventures of Willy Beamish
Sega 32X:
Metalhead
Fahrenheit
Jaguar:
Tempest (I think?)
3DO:
Way of the Warrior
Crash 'N Burn
PS1:
Double Helix
PS2:
Red Faction
Resident Evil: Dead Aim
Dreamcast:
Seaman
XBOX:
Brute Force
Pariah
360:
CSI: Hard Evidence (Who killed Rachel!?)
Perfect Dark Zero
PC:
Redneck Rampage
Postal 1 & 2
There are probably a lot more that I'm not thinking about, but my brain is falling asleep right now.

AHDTVDiet 03-05-08, 04:49 AM I LOVED Overlord (but then so did a lot of people, just not reviewers)
I loved Farcry on the xbox360 (but maybe people only thought this game sucked because they already played it on PC).
Ok, I don't know if I remember this correctly, but I played through ET for Atari and didn't think it was that bad (I was like 8-10 at the time). It was years later that I became aware that it was pretty much universally despised.
I definitely don't remember thinking it sucked. I'm sure it does though, but through my faded, fuzzy memories through the eyes of a child from 25 years ago, I seem to remember liking it.
I had exactly the same experience. The game itself was very straight forward. I seem to remember even completing it. Wasn't it just a glorified version of some other old atari game called "quest" or "adventure" where you guided a dot around looking for keys and dragons to kill.?
sirjonsnow 03-05-08, 08:44 AM ET was nothing like Adventure.
ET was nothing like Adventure.
oh well excuuuuse me . It was only about 30 years ago:rolleyes:
bonanza bros
out of this world
Out of this world was NOT a bad game! The graphics were actually revolutionary for the time.
saunupe1911 03-05-08, 09:48 AM All the Power Ranger games, especially the one of SNES and Genesis. Seeing those Zords were awesome back then.
Tenkaipalm 03-05-08, 10:21 AM +1 for Enter the Matrix and Friday the 13th.
Here are some I remember playing like a madman when I was a kid:
On computer (very old computers), it was always a mad race at recess in school to play Oregon Trail. It was like christmas when you got to hunt and shoot a buffalo.
Double Dribble on the NES. There was a spot on the court where you could nail half court 3 pointers all day long. My brother and I would go back and forth launching them, SWISH!
Friday the 13th. Horrible game, yet I kept on playing. It scared the ever loving crap out of me every time I saw Jason coming at me.
benjamin-benjami 03-05-08, 12:05 PM All the Power Ranger games, especially the one of SNES and Genesis. Seeing those Zords were awesome back then.
that is right for some reason i loved the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers also...

Hey, I was just saying they weren't the same, not putting you down or anything.
There was a game for Coleco where you played as a dragon. You had to gather eggs for extra lives and gems to make your stronger or breathe a longer stream of fire. Most of the game was underground, but there was also an above ground section with blue skies and I remember swarms of bees. There were a few "boss" monsters, though they weren't big, and the last was some kind of witch or hag. It got more difficult each time you defeated the witch, but only like three levels of difficulty before resetting.
I always liked the Coleco version of Mr. Do, but I don't know how true to the arcade it was.
Coleco had a Smurfs game too.
crackedwriter 03-05-08, 12:42 PM Battle Tanx both 1 and 2 for N64. Sooo much damn fun. Post apocalyptic global battles around the world by radioactive tank gangs over the few remaining women on the planet. Setting off nukes in Paris totally destroyed the Eiffel Tower and the city. Endless hours spent in multiplayer...

YES! And I thought I was the only one.
JasonSuave 03-05-08, 01:54 PM EDF....Earth Defense Force 2017
No way. This game got decent reviews. And the coop aspect made the game completely playable.
JasonSuave 03-05-08, 01:57 PM scene it for 360
This game definitely doesn't suck, based on its reviews. Also, the popularity of this game has accelerated, long after its release. In fact, sales were horrible a few months ago, but once word spread, they've picked up. Plus, regardless of any reviews, this game is a HUGE crowd pleaser.
the red worm 03-05-08, 02:02 PM I have a special place in my heart for Def Jam Icon on 360. I don't know what it is but that game was really fun for me.
Sundull 03-05-08, 02:23 PM I have to admit, I have always like the Dynasty Warrior series.
I've liked all the Dynasty Warriors games, mostly because I got caught up in the history. I also really liked Dynasty Tactics and trying to get all the alternate endings.. I liked Dark Cloud, and it got really good reviews.
pbicich 03-05-08, 02:32 PM Tough. Dont have time to play anything "bad" now days, but since im oldish, its got to be an old game, and looking back at what we played the most that clearly sucked then and now was a game called Beauty and the Beast(Intellivision). BADBADBAD. And i guess for this century, Devil May Cry 2 apparently sucked(so ive read), but I played that enough.
assasyn 03-05-08, 03:10 PM Ooh ohh, I have another one. Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi.
I also loved the G.I. Joe game for SNES.
BMaugans 03-05-08, 03:19 PM Three games on the original Xbox come to mind:
Bloodrayne - the first one. The second one was the biggest pile of poo ever. One of the few games I completely finished.
SSX: On Tour - WAYYY more fun for me than SSX3.
Wakeboarding Unleashed - I still dig that game out from time to time.
On the 360, I loved Kameo, but I'm confused because I thought the game got good reviews and most people that I know that actually played more than ten minutes of it loved it.
Surf's Up!
This game didn't really have a lot going for it, but my son and I love playing it. They didn't try and re-create the movie in the game. They basically created a surfing version of SSX, and it is actually pretty fun.
joshuavern 03-05-08, 04:08 PM I could name any number of Master System games that I loved out of simple ignorance to the alternatives of the time, but one that people consistently dog that I find suprising is Rastan. Sure it didn't look or sound as good as the arcade, but it didn't look or sound bad either. Plus it captured the gameplay feel very nicely.
styxx_78 03-05-08, 04:13 PM Wario Woods on SNES. I evenmodded my PSP to get an emulator that would play it just for this game.
I have probably beaten teh single player at least 50 times.
krimson 03-05-08, 04:43 PM Enchanted Arms. 1000/1000 achievements, and even went through that big bonus dungeon and beat the boss so I could use him in the end game fight sequences. Everybody seemed to hate the game, but I liked the battle system and thought the inane banter between the characters was amusing.
How about Zero Wing? All your base...LMAO.
Thoraudio 03-05-08, 05:21 PM Really old school here..... howsabout The Dark Crystal for the Apple IIe? My uncle had a giant piece of paper gridded out.

YellowLight 03-05-08, 07:25 PM Wasn't it just a glorified version of some other old atari game called "quest" or "adventure" where you guided a dot around looking for keys and dragons to kill.?
Adventure on the 2600 was kind of oddly addictive, although by any objective measure it really sucked. Same with the Missile Command implementation.
I still remember mapping out Zork... (Don't remember if it was called Zork yet at that point or if it was still Dungeon. It was on a PDP-10.) Many long nights, many sheets of paper. Fun. But it didn't really suck. :)
formulanerd 03-05-08, 07:57 PM Out of this world was NOT a bad game! The graphics were actually revolutionary for the time.
i agree, i dont remember a whole lot of publicity or talk about it, which is why i listed it.... one of the first games ever made that creeped me out.
formulanerd 03-05-08, 08:01 PM Enchanted Arms. 1000/1000 achievements, and even went through that big bonus dungeon and beat the boss so I could use him in the end game fight sequences. yikes! horrible game... i tried really hard to get into it, maybe 5 hours or so but man is it bad.

I read the gamespot review before I bought it, It was 7.x. I guess a 7 isnt a bad game, but I would normally never buy a game rated a 7. I bought it, and I love it.

It took me like 70 hours but it was well worth it to get to play with the genocide gun. Keep it up!
chadly25 03-05-08, 08:39 PM No way. This game got decent reviews. And the coop aspect made the game completely playable.
You think a 6.9 or a 7.1 review is decent? Don't know about you but if a game scores in this range I typically won't rent it much less own it.

Come on now, i think we are talking aweful even for the time. Im 39, and if you are this old and played this in 1979-80 no way was this a game that sucked!!!! When you got to the end of this and the invisible chamber it was pure bliss(again for the time)
pbicich 03-06-08, 01:08 AM Where is Carmen Sandiego? It was a good seller though
She's in my basement:eek: just kidding must be the Captain Morgan speaking:p
Posty-McPost 03-06-08, 01:47 AM Agent USA...pointless but strangley addictive
slowfaller 03-06-08, 03:36 AM Elevator Action on the NES. Completly mind numbing but I played it a lot.
Alien Action on the Genesis. Side scroller like Streets of Rage but some levels put you into a first person mode and you'd use the dpad to move a recticle arounds shooting aliens.
killakaipo 03-06-08, 06:29 AM Micheal Jacksons MOONWALKER! the arcade version.

I remember the HOnky tonk man shot these guitar notes out of his guitar that messed you upYep, lol.
adventure on the atari. Aweful, but for some reason i kept playing it.Erm? Adventure was probably one of the most interesting and sophisticated games on the VCS for a long time. All my friends and I were endlessly hooked by its open and random nature. Getting swallowed by a dragon and then being carried around the kingdom by the bat, while still in the dragon's stomach, was hilarious. It was a great design for its time, and I think it's still fascinating to play today.
greenjp 03-06-08, 11:53 AM I've got a couple. How about Q-bert? The core gameplay wasn't bad at all, but did it ever end? From what I could tell when you got to a certain point the levels were sorta randomly generated and became impossible to complete. Or at least impossible for my 7 year old self :p
RC Pro-Am was great, except for the fatal Q-bert like flaw. I could never win the races once I got the upgrade to the fastest car. I could do great with the car just below it, but the computer cars just got too fast once you stepped up to the fastest model. I'd have to purposely avoid running over the upgrades on the track.
Neither of those games "sucked", but it definitely sucked that there seemed to be no way to finish them, if there even was a finish?
There was a very similar game to RC Pro-Am that came out later, Rockn Racing or something, that was excellent. The first game I remember that featured "real" music, Paranoid and Highway Star I believe were part of the soundtrack.

rainman64 03-06-08, 01:15 PM I couldn't get enough of King's Field back on the PS1. It was almost universally panned, but there was just something so unique and creepy about it. I threw it in about a month ago and it still has somewhat held up. I just can't get used to the controls now after years of dual analog sticks.
This would be a great next-gen franchise to remake for the 17 of us that would buy it :D
Funny, but I loved that game too.
All my friends hated it tho, and they stopped coming over, 'cuz I was spending hours wandering around looking for a key or shield or armor....

Ikari Warrior 03-06-08, 03:52 PM Sticking with just 360 I enjoyed Shadowrun, Soldier of Fortune Payback, Bulletwitch, and Earth Defense Force 2019 quite a bit.
SubSolar 03-06-08, 07:27 PM Another vote for Shadowrun. I was addicted to it in the summer, then got into Halo 3 , then Call of Duty 4. Recently start playing Shadowrun again after half a year of not to touching it. Probably my favorite game ever!
Morkeleb 03-06-08, 11:29 PM Hahaha you're kidding right? I thought that was universally known as the worst game on Xbox. I think OXM gave free copies of that game to their letters of the month as a joke.
Anyways I would say Shadowrun. That was seriously an amazing game I can't believe it got such a bad reputation it's one of the most balanced online shooters ever and it actually took skill:eek: maybe that's why everyone hated it.
There was also this game on xbox called Enclave that I thought was a blast but I don't think anybody but me bought it haha.
No joke as the title says, games that sucked that you loved. I even finished the game and enjoyed doing it. :p,
stewdadon 03-07-08, 12:45 AM E.T. for Atari it was my first video game. Oh well.
Also, Altered Beast for Gensis. I'd play that game any day.

No it was quite an interesting little game : much more involving than most VCS games.
Its interesting looking back though just how much effort of imagination it actually took to find any of these games rewarding or enjoyable. Lots of those games are mind-numbing in the extreme: a simple card game or chequers would with hindsight be a hugely more enjoyable experience ( and I'm speaking as someone who played games right from when they first appeared)
Lets face it most of them from an actual activity and task perspective are about as enjoyable as a root canal but in your head playing a game where you were conceptually slaying dragons and running around castles was a really novel and exciting "idea".
Its not difficult to see how the text only adventures were actually regarded as deeper more immersive ( even more exciting) experiences than your average : move dot about and avoid dots fired by other moving dots until the end of time type of thing ( oh yeah and your dot is actually a knight/powerful starship, flying crab monkey...change as applicable).
Back then a huge part of the essential attraction in playing video games was that you were playing " video games". The whole idea of interacting with a bit of high(ish) technology was like something out of a sci-fi story made real. I can even remember the excitement induced by some of the box covers of the atari games : you almost had to keep the cover with you to remind and fix in your head what the on screen dots were representing !
Video games were pretty much a fetish ! Rather than a genuinely enjoyable experience.
I guess that whole willful suspension of disbelief is something people can't necessarily appreciate looking back with a contemporary perspective.
SNES...Secret of Evermore. I've played through that game almost as many times as FFVII, and enjoy the hell out of it every time. The fake B-movie references, alchemy system, and variety of locales make it very enjoyable to me. And come on, you get to play as your dog if you want. The game was pretty much universally panned as a horrible effort by Square, and considering the timing of it's release (Chrono Trigger had just come out) I can't blame the critics for not liking it. Still one of my all-time faves though.
guyutemsg 03-07-08, 04:11 PM oh here's one I couldn't remember, but it just came to me.
Star Voyager for NES ... man was that game terrible. I could never figure out what to do. I landed on some planets ... looked around and took back off. Flew around space some more. What the heck was that?
I use to play it all the time, never so much understanding more than the basics. Sometimes there was an alien on a planet, but still no interaction. You couldn't walk around. I really had no clue.

unclepauly 03-07-08, 11:59 PM I think The Outfit for 360 was a really fun and addictive multiplayer game. That game got shafted bigtime. I loved the quasi-rts/third person shooter gameplay. It's BS hardly anybody plays it online. I think it's way more fun than C&C3 because of the third person shooter aspect.
BMaugans 03-08-08, 12:09 PM Faery Tale Adventure on the Genesis. It was crap, and I knew it was crap while playing it, but for some reason I enjoyed it.
You should track down the sequel that came out for the PC a few years later - I still consider it one of the greatest RPG games of all time. It was just as good as the old Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Neverwinter NIghts games and predated all of them.

Leo_Ames 03-08-08, 07:36 PM I'm puzzled why some of you consider games with no endings as being poor.
The point for the first 10 years of videogaming in most cases was to play for high scores. The point of a game like Asteroids isn't to beat it, but to play for scores, and as a result many of the best games of that era are still fondly remembered since there's always incentive to return to it.
This is unlike many modern games where once you beat it, you probably won't return most likely since you already did all there was to do. Two distinct lines of thought with different strengths and weaknesses, but as the success of games like Geometry Wars shows, I think there's still room in 2008 for playing for high scores.
unclepauly 03-09-08, 12:23 AM and fun.

Leo_Ames 03-09-08, 08:33 PM River Raid is beatable, when you reach a million points, the score changes to exclamation points, and gameplay ends.

Leo_Ames 03-10-08, 12:43 AM Why do you call Toobin' a sucky game? Has attractive graphics and interesting gameplay. You can still find some on location earning money after two decades. I still play it pretty regularly since its challenging and fun, especially with 2 players.

And more recently, I'd say Pimp My Ride. I know I'm the only person that liked that game. Seemed kinda like Crazy taxi to me.
unclepauly 03-16-08, 01:54 AM and Crazy Taxi was awesome. Now I gotta check out Pimp my Ride. God help me.
formulanerd 03-16-08, 02:16 AM and Crazy Taxi was awesome.
you tried the simpsons road rage clones? pretty fun if you like crazy taxi.
ET was so horrible how did you not get sucked in...i hated that game every time I played it but for some reasaon i still sat down for hours a day with that game....lol...
ChrisFB 03-16-08, 09:32 AM Cyber Speeway for the Saturn - lots of fun and good soundtrack
Rambo for the Apple II - text adventure game a la Zork. Could never beat it but everyone I knew quit long before I did and thought it was a major letdown for a big title. We were all kind of amazed they did it as a text adventure at that point as most games had moved beyond that.
Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari 2600 - frustrating but provided many hours of entertainment even beating it a few times. I find myself thinking of it occasionally and wanting to go back. ET was pretty bad though, very C- level game for what should have been a marquee title.
Countermeasure for the 5200 - I don't know that this was hated but I was the only one who I know of that played it a lot. I also actually liked the 5200 controllers which seem to be universally hated on the net today.
Mario Brothers for the 5200 - Great co-op game. Probably not hated but certainly not noteworthy from that era.
Autoduel for the Apple II - This is another that wasn't really hated but never got anywhere close to the popularity of Origin's other titles like Ultima. I thought this game was flat out fabulous and one of the first "open playground" type games where you could really do anything you wanted and pursue whatever areas of the game interested you. I always thought a MMORPG version would be a huge success but I think they tried something like it a few years ago and it didn't do too well. Not sure whether it was implementation or idea.
And although not panned I'll throw up a big booyaa for some old time classics like Wizardry, Ultima, and Bards Tale.
studiotan 03-16-08, 03:17 PM i agree, i dont remember a whole lot of publicity or talk about it, which is why i listed it.... one of the first games ever made that creeped me out.
Out of this World was AMAZING for it's time. I loved that game and it's considered a classic. You may not have seen much publicity for it because in most parts of the world it was actually called Another World, I think it was only called Out Of This World in the US.
They recently released a 15th Anniversary Edition (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/anotherworld/index.html).
To the topic, does anyone but me remember Yuu Yuu Hakusho for the 3DO? http://www.gamespot.com/3do/action/yuuyuuhakusho/index.html I think it was only available as a japanese import. I picked it up in some store because I liked the cover. Me and my friends all thought it sucked horribly but we played it for hours on end :D

yeah, remember those swarms of bugs that would chase you to the ends of the earth? Not sure, but I think that game was made by the same people who made ET. So frustrating...
lol what a mess:

munkyxtc 03-17-08, 11:54 AM This game definitely doesn't suck, based on its reviews. Also, the popularity of this game has accelerated, long after its release. In fact, sales were horrible a few months ago, but once word spread, they've picked up. Plus, regardless of any reviews, this game is a HUGE crowd pleaser.
Agreed; this is a huge hit when you have guests over...sure, it's not something I'm going to sit down and play by myself but I never intended for that. Trust me, if you have non gamers over this will suck them in.
MurphyDK 03-17-08, 12:23 PM Desert Strike for the SEGA Genesis...
Conflict Desert Storm (Where you can get shot by a tank and a teammate can revive you)
Fishing Derby for the Atari 2600
and I second the Jaws one as well...
NeonMcGurk 03-17-08, 05:22 PM Does anyone remember the Peen and Teller Video games (I think for either Genesis or Sega CD) that had a completely realistic bus driving simulation from Las Vegas to LA. It took several hours to complete with nothing to do but drive the bus. Does anyone know what i'm talking about?

Cygnus311 03-18-08, 10:05 PM I don't know if it really counts because it got good reviews but I loved Viva Pinata. One of the best games so far this gen IMO however most adults would breeze right over it on store shelves.
jdm roxorz 03-18-08, 11:28 PM Conflict: Desert Storm
bland graphics, it had horrible controls, and even worse AI for the 4 man fire team you were part of. That said, it has to be one of the most fun games I've EVER played COOP with a buddy of mine. We ran through the entire campaign together and had a blast. You could share ammo, medical kits and whatever weapons you picked up which made for some cool fire fights.
me: %*!#$ I'm on my last mag!
buddy: I've got extra, cover me and I'll drop some at your feet!
good times! I purchased Conflict: Vietnam hoping it would give us the same kind of fun but we were severely disappointed.
sounds just like me and my buddy. we loved those games!
spinoza_43221 03-19-08, 03:51 AM I just wanted to mention that plenty of people still play shadowrun.
You can still find a match anytime you want and I have even found there is
an 'adults' night on wednesdays.
If you never played the game you should give it a go.
I don't see anything on the horizon that matches the gameplay that shadowrun gives. Excellent game
+1 from me as well
saunupe1911 03-19-08, 09:48 AM Mario Paint - The concept was very innovative, but I couldn't draw at all. I played the bee swat game mostly
asudog1080 03-19-08, 04:12 PM Jurassic Park on Sega CD.
That game was the hottness back in the day!
CaCHooKa Man 03-19-08, 07:35 PM i loved shenmue 1+2 and skies of arcadia for the dreamcast and earthbound for the snes. i beat all those games multiple times. my friends still make fun of me from time to time saying that im the only one that ever played those games.
ChrisFB 03-19-08, 08:56 PM yeah, remember those swarms of bugs that would chase you to the ends of the earth? Not sure, but I think that game was made by the same people who made ET. So frustrating...

There was something to do with the parachute too toward the end of the game. I remember having to jump off and fly into the cave maybe avoiding a branch or something. Crazy game. Thanks for the vid - brings back memories. Teetsy flies suck.
unclepauly 03-19-08, 10:13 PM i loved shenmue 1+2 and skies of arcadia for the dreamcast and earthbound for the snes. i beat all those games multiple times. my friends still make fun of me from time to time saying that im the only one that ever played those games.
I played Shenmue1 and thought it was pretty good. Especially for the time. The action sequences were a little sparse and the game world wasn't actually all that big, but something just kept me playing it. Story and atmosphere was the best at the time.
crispytreat 03-20-08, 01:04 PM i loved shenmue 1+2 and skies of arcadia for the dreamcast and earthbound for the snes. i beat all those games multiple times. my friends still make fun of me from time to time saying that im the only one that ever played those games.
Skies of Arcadia was a great game. I am a sucker for a decent RPG.
whiskey > work 03-20-08, 01:20 PM these are all good games by the way
xXBatmanXx 03-20-08, 02:47 PM Wow, had to clean out the cobwebs to think about some of this.
I made a list before I got into it, and had ot laugh at some of the similarities to my list, and some of them are just outright "what the heck - really? That game is a cult favorite and was awesome then as well".
My List with comments:
Bubble Bobble: No bones about it - sucked, but was fun. Never ending.
Faery Tale: I can't believe someone else mentioned this. I recently bought NIB copy for $10.00 to play again. One of the hardest games of all time.
Two Worlds: I love this game to no end, not sure where all the hate comes from.
Treadmarks: What a craptastic game.
Rocket Jockey: Hard as nails, great game in my eyes, didn't go far. Before it's time.
Bad Dudes: Laughably bad.
Delta Force: Great co-op game, but was so so bad.
Soldner: I thought it was great, but it didn't live up to it's hype so it was abandoned
Hidden and Dangerous: For the life of me, I spent a ton of time on that game, but didn't get far at all. It has some weird following, but it sucked big time. I admit it, even though it was so hard, even the 2-3 maps I could beat were a ton of fun in co-op.
/edit: Almost forgot one: Wizards and Warriors: OMG! I downloaded it, and tried again all these years later. omfgwtfbbqsauce! Hard game. Love it. I remember spending TONS of hours on this game and not getting very far. The era before FAQs and walkthroughs....some games were nigh impossible. This game, was on that list.
/edit over.
Not sure why these games are on people's lists:
Burger Time: Considered one of the best of all time.
Out of this World: Way before it's time, cult following. I still like playing it.
Karate Kid: I thought this did well (from memory) I spent a ton of time, very hard game.
Carmaggedon series: These are considered some of the best ever. (last game was bad)
Joust: ??? One of the best of all time (Balloon Fight was also sweet)
Elevator Action: ?? Actually my favorite game of all time. Have multiple copies for my NES, even some unopened ones. :)
T&C Surf: I think this did rather well. I thought the game was pretty easy, although simple, was still very fun.
I echo a lot of what Leo_Ames said. (yes, I am ALSO very popular at parties :))
Classic gaming is actually my passion.
Other than Elevator Action: Ms. Pac-Man, Mr.DO!, Tron, Joust, Krull, and Robotron (Food Fight) are probably the best games ever made. Period.
scottro 03-20-08, 02:49 PM My girlfriend still makes fun of me playing Shenmue to this day.
"Do you remember that day...the day of the incident?"
"HEY RYO!!!"
DJ Nupe 03-20-08, 04:45 PM Superman Returns for the 360. It got trashed but I loved playing it......until I sold it. :-)
Atari 2600: Pac-Man, E.T., Adventure, Plaque Attack, Football, Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man, Haunted House, Boxing
Some of the worse games ever and I loved playing them. But hey, the old Atari games were $5 a piece back then. So it wasn't all bad.
krimson 03-20-08, 05:33 PM Mario Paint - The concept was very innovative, but I couldn't draw at all. I played the bee swat game mostly
Haha. I was never that amused with this as a kid, but it turned out to be an awesome party game in my early 20's. I should REALLY remember to clear the memory on that cartridge in case it ends up in the hands of a child one day. Oh the horror that would be.
whiskey > work 03-20-08, 05:58 PM someone said Oregon Trail. I oughta smack you for even saying that gem was a bad game, but I won't. I'll just pretend....
formulanerd 03-20-08, 06:09 PM i think i had a paint game too, but it was for sega.
whiskey > work 03-20-08, 06:24 PM Hey, anyone remember a NES game called Anticipation? One of the greatest board games of all time. So much fun
Leo_Ames 03-20-08, 10:58 PM Bubble Bobble: No bones about it - sucked, but was fun. Never ending.
Why do you say that? I've never seen anyone that ever played Bubble Bobble that thought that.
Why would you say that about Adventure and Haunted House? They're two great classics.
formulanerd 03-20-08, 11:44 PM anyone ever play the adams family game? cant remember if it was for nes or snes.
whiskey > work 03-21-08, 09:19 AM anyone ever play the adams family game? cant remember if it was for nes or snes.
that was for NES and it was very fun from what I can gather
crispytreat 03-21-08, 10:37 AM that was for NES and it was very fun from what I can gather
I remember the snes version, I really enjoyed that one.
SuperGrafx 03-21-08, 02:03 PM Hey, anyone remember a NES game called Anticipation? One of the greatest board games of all time. So much fun
Yep, I do.
It was actually made by Rare Ltd. That's something I wouldn't mind seeing remade for XBLA.
Viper187 03-21-08, 02:10 PM Genma Onimusha - I've been playing it forever. Everyone bitches about the controls, but it's a sweet game. I wish I could find something newer that could keep me entertained for so long.
formulanerd 03-29-08, 07:03 PM BMX XXX - Xbox
where else can you find a good BMX game, create a slutty character, stare at her thong while she rides, crude humor, AND collect money to see REAL videos of REAL scores girls REALLY naked.... in a video game?
