What a game! Finally making my way through this masterpiece and just took some time to run around. I still think this is the best "experience" I've ever had in gaming from the sights and sounds standpoint. The grass rustling, the thunderstorms, the long quest. It's all been so worth it. Oh and I tried to post in the oblivion thread but mistakenly hit enter and it created a new thread so cut me some slack

great game. I really wish they'd adjust pricing on the marketplace DLC though. It's ridiculous that shivering isles and knights of the nine are still $40 together when they are included with the game of the year edition.

hey you ever do that quest where this guy sends you to help his 2 sons kill those goblins? They were wrecking us, and the sons wound up getting killed. So what did I do? I used a feather potion and ran back into town. The big goblin bezerkers followed me into town. There were people running away and goats and dogs running! It was great. Then the guards came out and wrecked these things for me. I still have never seen anything like this in a game.

I haven't gotten into Oblivion at all, to be honest. Which is weird considering that I usually love that type of game. Maybe I need to give it another shot. Of course right now World of Warcraft is ruling my life...so...

Same here.

I was a big EQ player, then WoW player..and after about 30min into Oblivion I got bored and have yet to play it again.

Its a popular game..but I would hardly call it the best next-gen experience.

I liked the game as well and got all 1250 points. I have a character with 100% chameleon and what is basically a one-hit kill dagger. It felt like Predator in ye olden days.

... And here I thought the best "next gen" first-person experience was provided by BioShock!

hmm. It may be. But it is still not as huge as oblivion. I'm not here to say "best graphics" or "best sound", it's the immersion and the overall package, if you get me.

agree. I would go as far to say that it is the best "game" i have ever played. Granted, not best graphics, or sound. But total, in all, the immersion and fluid story line kept me going at it for more hours than I can even remember. Yep. Best. Game. Ever. At least for me :D

Except for the repetitiveness (another cave trek?) and load interruptions, it was a great experience. Still lots of ground to cover. I took some time off to furnish my newly bought castle! :D

Definitely one of my fave Xbox 360 titles so far. I keep it in my 360 and it's what I play most of the time. I have four different characters that I'm progressing through the game.

I'm with you. I started playing Oblivion and lost interest. Which is weird because I loved Morrowind that I played the crap out of it for over a year. I had all the mods for the game. Warcraft is just a lot more interesting since I am playing with other people. Oblivion just seemed so barren.

I created a spell to boost their attributes and make them mostly invisible to keep'em alive during the fight. I later created an even more powerful version for the Battle For Bruma. Escort missions can be a pain.

As for riots and near-riots in the cities, just wait til you hit the Market district when the undercover Dawn sleepers break out after you; I went invisible and watched as the guards and citizens took on the would-be assassin.

Also, in another town I was walking by when the guards suddenly went wild, chasing and attacking one of the locals. After they killed it I checked and only found a loaf of bread on the Khajit. Apparently they killed it for stealing a loaf of bread.
Tough place, Cyrodil. :-)

Makes me want to go give Shivering Isles another run-through...

Yea wiskey, i actually saved the boys in the garden. Didnt wanna find out what would happen if I didnt, but thats freakin cool that the goblins followed you back. Oblivion was and still is a fantastic game. I beat the main quest and 3 guilds but never picked up my dragon armor :O

well it sucked because the father didn't give me anything after he learned his sons had been killed. So I helped the punks for nothing...I think I'll be paying the father a visit again now that the leader of the Dark Brotherhood has given me the powers of a vampire. I had thoughts of smacking him in the head with my warhammer at the time, but thought better of it. You just don't go sending people on quests and not rewarding them. There's a principle here. He will pay with his life. I hear everyone about this game and how they just couldn't get into it. I actually returned the game because it was consuming so much time, then forced myself to buy it when it was 20 bucks new and just keep chipping away at it. I don't think I've played a game in my life that is as deep and involving as this one. World of warcraft I have never played, but playing with other people must be insane fun. I could see myself becoming like Cartman in Southpark with this game

If you'd saved them, thus successfully completing the quest, you woulda gotten a very nice sword.
In Oblivion, you get nice rewards if you succeed but failure doesn't earn you much.
As i said, its a tough place.
Surviving isn't enough; you have to actually achieve.

You serious? I would have gotten a nice sword? I wonder if the father uses that sword...we'll find out soon enough and I will take it from his dead body!

Yup! A frost effect sword.
But its a family heirloom.
Killing him won't get you the sword.

Damn, that pisses me off. I guess I gotta be more careful with some of these missions. My current weapons really suck too. I could have used it.

Start making use of the save system. Save prior to your quest and reload if you fail so that you can try again.

yeah, it's the Chillrend
it causes weakness to Frost, then inflicts Frost damage

easily the best weapon I received, early on in my quest. it saved my life many times when the enemies became tougher. I got it so early, that I didn't know how (or have anything) to recharge it.

Unfortunately, it's many of the other players in World of Warcraft that make it suck :)

I have sunk a lot of hours into Oblivion and it's expansions. I liked it very much, but there was nothing about the game that screamed "next gen" to me. I was far more blown away by Gears of War and Mass Effect.

Well, it might not be built on the Unreal 3 engine like the two games you listed and it may not match more recent releases in "eye-candy" looks, but it is a deep, high-quality game that met two tests of "next-gen"-ess when it was first released *two years ago*:
1- It is a game simply not doable on last-gen boxes (or the Wii, for that matter)
2- At the time of its release, the PC version required a video card costing more than a 360 Pro.

It beat Gears to market by 6 months, you know, and most people who got on release were still playing it when Gears came out.
And, as the OP points out, the game still holds its own with people coming to it fresh two years after release. That is pretty good value for a *current* generation game. :)

best dollar value in gaming for single player. Can't beat Oblivion for that. I got 110 hours or something into it, and still haven't finisihed it or started the expansion packs.

I think for a game like this though, that it requires or consumes so much time, that if you played the WOW's, or EQ's of the world, you look at Oblivion as kinda of a task, that you already invested time into a game like it, and as a result you don't have as much patience in it.

I took a break from long RPG's for a while for that reason. Then I turned on Oblivion and fell in love. I got to admit, at first it didn't grab me, but once you get into the main story a bit it sucked me in...then there's the never ending side quest and if you like exploring area's....no other game beats it.

Best Next Gen experience? Not sure, what is "next gen" anymore? Best RPG, Best adventure, best money spent on a game yes.

Don't get me started on that GOW....I should have rented it and not bought it, with the maybe 8 hours of time it took to finish it, what a waste of money.

Oblivion to me was one of the best "next gen" experiences I had along with Crackdown, Mass Effect, and Rock Band. I include Rock Band in the "next gen" just because it is better IMO on the 360 than the PS2 in many aspects.

Nope......

Mass Effect> Oblivion
Bioshock> Oblivion
COD4> Oblivion
Halo 3> Oblivion
Gears of War> Oblivion

Ofcourse its all IMO. Oblivion is a great game though. In fact, those are the only Next-Gen games I consider to even be in the same league as Oblivion.

I liked Oblivion well enough, put in over 200 hours. Still though I thought it was a bit of a let down after Morrowind and Daggerfall so I can't call it the best game experience. It is definitly (to me) not the best "next gen" game experience. As a near launch title it was awesome, but surely there have been games that are far more impressive graphically and sound wise. There has not yet been a world as open to wander around in this gen, but I cant really consider that "next gen" since morrowind had the same thing and it was done better IMHO.

Heres hopping the boys make Fallout 3 even better and then follow that up with an even better Elders Scrolls.

Children children!
Those games are not really comparable!
Oblivion is a sandbox RPG while Mass Effect is an Action RPG. Siblings but not rivals.
The others are shooters with story (Bioshock, Halo) or just plain shooters (COD4, GOW).
Might as well compare SUVs to sports cars...
Can't we all just get long?
:D

If you *really* must compare such diverse games, at least have the decency to state your criteria; eye-candy, immersion, playability, story (if any), online experience, whatever...

And howzabout we retire next gen unless we're talking about the 2011-vintage XBOX? After three years its pretty obvious we're talking *current* generation games.

Now, off to your corners and wait for the bell to ring...
