I'm working on my construction of my media room, and am trying to find a lower cost solution to insulating my media room. I've read to use blown in insulation vs. batts. I also have read to add a 1/2" fiber board underneath the drywall to further reduce the sound (figure it would add another $2000)...

What other solutions are out there as I will be starting this part of my project in the next weeks...

Thanks for any advice -

I am using a blown fiberglass insulation in my room, but I am building the room at the same time I am building the house so I am just doing it all at one time. If you decide to use blow-in, avoid using the cellulose that uses water to activate the adhesive. That type of insulation is prone to molding.

The general consensus here is that is even better to use double layers of drywall if you are attempting to control the low frequency rumble that will escape to the rest of the house.

The fiber board (Celtex Soundstop board) runs About $10-12 a 4x8 sheet so you must be talking about an installed price.

Just a head up, it is exactly the same composition as the celotex building sheathing product (see Lowes). The sheathing product has a thin sprayed on waterproofing coating (tar) otherwise it is exactly the same. Once it's in the wall it doesn't make a difference so use the cheapest.

About the fiberboard, you wouldn't have happened to read about it in the online Home Theater Book, that is mentioned on this site would you?

Usually double drywall with Greenglue in between is the chosen method here.

I've read that there was an ancient civilization on Mars. :D

Sorry, I couldn't resist. But seriously, listen to the other folks here. You are getting good advice.
