View Full Version : wife destroyed MK sub - need replacement

Sigh, my wife was showing off her new yoga pose and lost her balance and crashed into my MK V90 powered sub and sent it careening into the wall and snapped off the line input connectors.

It's been a very reliable unit and is just a touch splashy which works well for theater for my taste.

I am guessing I'll need to replace it if I cannot repair the input terminals.

It's been so long since I shopped for any HT gear I have no clue where to look or what to look for.

I obviously want something that will give a similar sound to my MK. I am open to any and all suggestions except those about replacing the wife too. ;)

That post had me laughing out loud. I know it's not as humorous to you because your sub was damaged, but seriously, I'm just picturing it happening and it's hilarious!

If it can't be repaired, what would your budget be for a new one? How large is your room, what are your listening habits, etc. Check out this thread and answer the questions, and we'll have some great suggestions for you.

BTW, I really do feel bad about your sub, but the showing off a new yoga pose, losing her balance, and sending the sub "careening" into the wall was just too much! Best of luck in getting it fixed, but again, read that thread and give us some specifications and I can assure you you'll get some recommendations :).

I will say this, with most of the sub suggestions on here you won't have to worry about that happening again. The sub will be so big and heavy that your wife would just bounce off of the sub. :)

You can consider yourself lucky..With her being so directly responsible for the death of your former sub, you will not have to put up with her opinion on anything when shopping for a new one.

exactly right. Now she can't say no to buying a new toy. She encourage it...this time.

eD A7-900? She'd have enough room to do Yoga on top of the sub... :D

Hmmm after that, I'd consider replacing the wife and keeping the sub. Although replacement costs would be sky high.

Seriously sorry to hear about that. The connection terminals should be an easy fix though, if your willing to take off the amp from the back of the sub to do the repair. I realize M&K is no longer in business but connection terminals are pretty standard. I would go to parts express.com and see if you can find replacement parts, it should be a very easy fix.

Since she's clearly lacking in balance, I'd hate to see what happened if she fell off the A7-900. It's a far enough fall that she might not be doing to well after hitting the ground from so high up

In that case, a conquest lying on its side. Should be a fairly safe yoga platform with some nice vibration features.

WHA?!?! SHHHHH! He NEEDS a new sub! He's getting a free pass from the wife!

What in the hell? This thread is awesome. I can totally see my wife doing something like this. Or my kids for that matter. I had a son dump a 44 ounce pop on some speakers because he was using it as a toilet for his stuffed pet monkey while I turned around to see what the baby was doing.

I have downfiring SVS subs. They are built like a tank and I'm glad for it with the kids around. There is really no way they can hurt them.

Sorry to laugh but man that is an awesome story.

Well, some of these replies have had me laughing as well.

It is a pretty funny story when you get right to it.

Budget is not a huge consideration. Let's say around 1K or so. I honestly don't remember what I paid for it to begin with.

Obviously, if I can fix it that will be cheaper and I like the sound I get out of the current unit so no reason to get a new one if it's repairable.

My concern/wish is to keep a similar sound. The room is about 15x30. I have the current sub about halfway between the mains and the listening position.

The sound out of the MK is not super-tight. It's just a tad "splashy" or "boomy" and I've liked that for movies and such. It certainly has plenty of punch. Perhaps in the dozen or so years since I shopped for a sub things are different and maybe I'd like a "tighter" sub now if it had more power and kept the same "punch".

Oh, and yes, she is fine. Just feels bad about wrecking the sub.

Oh, and I don't need a "free pass" to get what I want. If I want to buy a new sub, I'll buy it. We are both pretty easy about that kind of thing. She buys what she wants and I buy what I want and no arguments. :)

Just a reminder. This needs to be a powered sub. It also needs to look nice as well as sound nice.

jvgillow - I looked at the eD sub and it has that pro audio "carpet" look that just does not look real good in the house.

Jayrader - I've looked at the SVS's on and off over the years and it looks like they have come a long way as a company since they started. Their mid-range subs seem to have a nice balance of musicality and punch for theater, at least on paper. They also look nice.

I am more than sure that he helped her up.
Oh, by the way, how is the sub doing?:D

Get down fire big box so your wife can pose whatever she likes and is capable of doing.

Just post a picture with your wife on top of your new sub with a Yoga pose and that will be sexy :)

I'm confused, I assumed you meant you needed a replacement wife, not sub? Which is it? ;)

RayZorFist

Well, sub may be repairable but, of course, this has opened up the option in my mind to look at a new sub and I've been looking.

@sdobrien - need new sub, not wife. :)

@1stHD - something like the SVS subs?

@BluLover - nope. I ran over and held my sub in my arms as I disconnected it from the outlet. I let my wife pick herself up. :D

like the one on the left. So she can practice Yoga on it. You don't get table dance on an ottman but get Yoga dance on Subwoofer :D enjoy.

You're just not thinking straight.

She destroyed your sub, so that means you get to purchase something like a ULD-18 or F113…

After reading a bunch I'm coming up with a couple for consideration.

The AV123 MFW-15
The SVS 20-39 PC-Plus
The SVS PB-12-Plus

I'd appreciate any insight.

I would throw the solidly built HSU VTF-3 MK3 in for your consideration.

Interesting thought, I would like some new mains.:p

How about an Outlaw LFM 1 Ex? It's probably equal to the HSU 3.3 (without a turbo)

I have the LFM 1 plus in a 3000 cf room, it'll send the animals scurrying, our teenage daughter running downstairs screaming about the thumping, and I don't even watch movies at reference levels. It's also wife friendly, with smooth painted sides and a smoked plexiglass top. I had to stop her from using it as an end table.

That combined with no one asking how the wife was after falling have made this my favorite thread ever.
