As suspected the Blu-ray industry (both hard & software) smell the big money after the dead of HD DVD.

Loss of competition rarely means good news for the consumer & that certainly is true in the recently called format war battle. Blu-ray could remain very pricey for some time to come. Average retail prices of Blu-ray players showed little impact & the majority of devices on the market are under a slight upward price curve, TG Daily found.

Why do people expect prices to just fall now when HDM is still in it's infancy. Toshiba really left a lot of deluded people running around with unrealistic expectations. If you're not willing to pay the premium to be an early adopter, wait it out on the sidelines until Blu-ray reaches mass adoption levels, if it ever does. I loved the low prices of the HD-DVD hardware as much as the next man, but as exhibited by Toshiba closing shop for HDM, it was unrealistic and could not be maintained this early in the game. Prices aren't just going to drop down to bargain bin prices now that Blu-ray is the only game in town so stop expecting it.

Wait, I thought blu ray was competing with downloads, SD DVD, VOD, sock puppets, transmitted video over brainwaves, etc... Which is it? Blu ray is going to fail because of too much competition, or there is no competition?

Hardware manufacture's will compete now that there's only one format, but it'll take at least a year for them to ramp up production of 2.0 players. Movies will take time to go down in price, unfortunately.
