I just purchased a Mirage Uni-Theater and am trying to decide on a good sub to use with it. Should I be looking at one of the Mirage Sub's like the Omni S10 or is their something else I should consider? I would like to stay at the $350 or below level. I am able to get the S10 for $350 which is why I was considering it. Thanks in advance!

The S10 is a pretty good sub for its size compared to other retail subs, so you could be very happy with it.

You could also consider the Hsu STF-2 for under $380 shipped (http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html) which would be a better choice than the S10

There are some other budget choices like the BIC H100 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=794393) which offer a lot of bang for buck and still very good sound quality

How big of a room are you trying to fill. Often, all of these subs are more suited to smaller rooms.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was kind of wandering if I should stick with Mirage for the subwoofer to match the Uni-Theater. I don't see many people posting about the Uni-Theater let alone what sub they are using. I am floored with the sound quality when I set it up this morning even without a sub. I actually had a H-100 in my old setup but sold it about a year ago. I was actually thinking about purchasing another one for this setup. The Hsu is definitely an option even though it is a little out of my price range.

No there is no reason you have to stick with Mirage. I'd go for the Hsu, the Mirage second. (The BIC I have no direct experience with)

Thanks for the advice. I need to research the HSU as it is pretty close to my price range.

I was going to purchase the S10 today for $350 but they sold the last one and won't be getting stock for 2 weeks. The only reason I was wanting this sub was because of the price (compared to $500 everywhere else) and the fact that it was the Mirage brand. So should I be looking at something else? I could wait the 2 weeks but I already have my uni-theater setup and would really like to find a sub for it. I thought about the Mirage S8 sub but worry about it not being enough. We have a medium size room so I can't imagine it being a problem. I have an orb audio setup with their super eight sub (also 8 inches) and it is more than enough for our living room. Of course the super 8 might be engineered a little bit better. I have not been able to find much info on what people with uni-theater's or omni's are using for a sub if they don't go the mirage route. My budget is $300-$400. I looked at the HSU's and SVS's but I am not sure which way to go. Would an STF-1 or STF-2 be enough for my living room? Would that be a better option ultimately over a mirage brand sub? I even noticed that Outlaw Audio has one in my price range but didn't know much about them. Sorry for so many questions but I think my mind is telling me I need the Mirage brand sub because of the uni-theater (which I know is not the case). I just wish I knew what other people are running with the uni-theater. Thanks again to anyone that replies.

You could buy the equivalent Energy sub (the sister brand of Mirage). They are actually identical in specs and performance. They use the same drivers and same amps.

Outlaw subs are very much equivalent in performance and sound to the Hsu brand because they were designed with Dr Hsu's consultation. The form is different but they have nearly the same volume and drivers.

I think you would be very impressed with a STF-2 or a similarly priced Outlaw LFM over the Mirage S10. I would not place any weight in matching the brand sub to the Unitheater because all you really need to do is get a sub that blends well with the main speaker and the Hsu, Outlaws are also very capable of that. There is tons of advice that people in this forum can give you to help you set up the sub.

BTW: I own a Mirage S12 (which is discontinued), so I don't give out the advice of Hsu and Outlaw lightly. The Mirage sub is very good and I continue to love it, but I'd say a the price of $350 for the S10 is reasonable but not really a great deal. So don't feel that bad that you didn't get in on it

I noticed that about the Energy subs but they seem difficult to find and their version of the S10 is about $500 normally also. To me the S10 is not a great deal at all at $500. Do you think the S8 would be a mistake to even consider? It would cost me about $325 which is why the S10 at $350 was a good deal. I am a little worried about how loud it would play before distorting. I have two children under the age of 2 so the days of cranking up the sub to outrageous levels are over :). Of course that may be why I have been happy with the orb audio super eight sub. I have that sub cranked up just half way and I have to turn it down a little every now and then. That may be because it is a great sub though. I have definitely heard 8 inch subs that were horrible and would distort fairly quickly.

the 8 inch is designed for small rooms only. I actually owned the S8 first and it cost me $199 brand new at the time. It was fine for a 12x8 room, it sounded pretty good though for its size, but I would not recommend it for any normal sized HT room.

If you have small kids, maybe you should consider a downfiring sub even more so the kids don't jam their toys into the driver

Then I am definitely ruling out the S8. Thanks for the info on that. That is actually a good idea regarding the sub. My wife actually reminded me last night that our new baby will probably be leaning on the sub and putting her snacks on it :). My son (who is 2 now) used to do that with my old acoustech sub (it had a softer cloth front on the sub). I was very paranoid at the time that he would punch a hole in the grill . Of course I worry about that with the Uni-Theater also but it has a harder grill. Can you recommend any good downfiring subs?

All of the Outlaws are downfiring.

Outlaw LFM1 Compact would be a great choice

Thanks! I just noticed they had a B-stock model with free shipping for $349 so I may go that route. I believe the new one is $399 plus you have to pay shipping.

Just curious, how high do you guys place your Uni-Theatre? Would it sound "muddy" if being placed too low?
