Hi there, I'm new to this forum, but found it while googling to try to find info on Sony Trinitrons not starting up properly. Seems like you guys know a thing or two about Sony TV's, so here we go...

I haven't found any posts with exactly the same symptoms as mine, but close. Its a 20" Sony Trinitron (model KVT25SN81, which seems to be a really random model).

Its just started exhibiting a weird semi-random startup sequence, ONLY FROM COLD. When it eventually starts, the picture is fine, and it will re-start no problem. But when turning on from cold, it hisses a bit, then standby light will come back on and a pop/click sounds from the speakers. It will go through a series of standby light on and off's, while the speaker pops, as if its trying to turn on, but falls back to standby mode. Then after about 20sec of this, a picture may come up for about a sec, but it is a bit distorted and flickery, and then it disappears, and another pop into standby mode. Eventually, the picture will come up, and stay on.

I've read a page about the Sony Blink codes but my standby light blinks are accompanied with speaker pops and don't really look like its trying to flash out a code. But I think I have seen a re-occurrence of 3 cycles of pops/blinks, and maybe another of 7. Does this sound like proper Blink Codes to someone who has seen them before? Or is it just going through attempts to start-up and shutdown?

I havn't pulled the back off the TV, cos I don't really know what to look for. Leaking capacitors seem to be a common fault in many of the devices I've diagnosed lately, so I guess that could be a remote possibility.

Thanks for any help on this matter... I really don't want to see another CRT in the landfill if I can help it!

Chris

Oh nevermind, I've fixed it. Took the back off, disconnected the main board from the other boards/wires, resoldered a few dodgy looking joints, blew the dust out, put it all back together, and bobsyouruncle it worked!

I think it was either a loose connection on one of the plugs/sockets on the main board, or a dry solder joint.

How this helps someone else with similar problems. Don't dump your old TV until you've at least tried to get it going!
