View Full Version : All New!!!!!
audiofreak38 03-05-08, 04:29 PM As some of you may know I recently had to dismantle my ht due to my roof leaking. It turns out that I will be moving into a new home in about a month. As such, I have began to put together a good set-up. So far, I will be using the Polk Rti6's for my fronts, the Csi3 for my center, and the Rti4's for my rears. Hope to soon have the Fxi for my back surrounds but first I plan on getting a sub. I also have just ordered an Onkyo 705 receiver which will be here very soon. As always, my budget is tight like most others here. My new theater room is actually a small bedroom that measures a bit over 12' long and just over 7.5' wide with a 7' flat ceiling totaling about 706 ft. ^3. The room is kinda small and is enclosed. Have been thinking about the Infinity SW-12 which can be had for $400 at Vanns and usally cost $800. There is no doubt that sub would pressurize that room quite easily but not sure about the musicality as well as the extension capabilities. Still working on ascertaining that info as we speak. So, been looking at the Hsu and Outlaw offerings. My question is would it be better to go with (2) very capable 8" subs like the STF-1's or go with a single 10" like the STF-2??? Better yet, how much better would a VTF2.3 do in a room that size?? My preference is on musical performance albeit tight, punchy, accurate, well articulated bass that offers distinctness in the transient response. Of course, dynamically capability as well as good extension for ht is also essential. I honestly do not care if the sub does not play down below the low 20's at all as I am NOT after an SPL machine (quanity) but rather quality that has some SPL capabilities. One thing is certain, physically speaking, dual 8" subs would be easier to place in such a small room. So, please chime in and help me out. Feel free to offer some alternatives as I am all ears. Would like to keep things no more than $500 or so. Lastly, if you have any experience at all with the Infinity SW-12 please elaborate as to your experiences with it and how does it compare to some of the more common recommended subs out there. Please do not recommend SVS because other than the Ultra 13 or even the SB12 Plus I am not interested nor can I afford either of them anyways. Thank you for your time.

Yeah this is a worthy contender BUT just can NOT get past the finish. I am not looking for furniture grade BUT I do want something decent looking. Thanks for the recommendation though. Have any other ideas?

I don't blame ya on that finish....it's a finish you definitely want to hide. I completely ruled them out on that alone also. Hsu and Outlaw's offerings (which you should consider also) are acceptable in that respect.
I would go with a single 10" for starters. You get enough extension (sub 30Hz) to be satisfying with almost any HT material you throw at it, and it has the headroom to fill your room adequately.
Yes, duals would theoretically provide more even response, but you do have to experiment a lot with placement to find the best spot for two subs now instead of one. The VTF models are basically like the STF but with added bass extension tuning option, the STF by itself offers very clean output over its useful range and wouldn't lag the VTF in terms of sound quality alone.
Are paragraphs already a thing of the past?
I would never read an OP like this.

You are right. I just bought a VTF-3 MK3 a few weeks ago, and it looks so good and classy that my wife even loves it. HSU makes really classy looking subs that don't look out of place. We also have an Onkyo 705 as well, it is a perfect marriage with HSU subs. Infact it is the #1 recommended aV reciever by HSU.
My room is 4480 cubic feet and the sub is quite perfect in it. The VTF-2 MK3 would be perfect in a room the size of yours. Enjoy.

Hey warp good to hear from you. Yeah, the eD finish does pose as a problem for me and I dont even have to deal w/a WAF. I am not knocking them, but just simply stating that the finish is NOT for me. I am strongly considering both Hsu and Outlaw. I also am thinking about getting a Velo Minivee 8" sub with a 1,000 watt rms amp. Everything I have read about it has been very favorable. With that much power it would easily pressurize my new room AND give me that ultra quick, tight, punchy bass that I crave. Thus, the Velo may not tear my walls down per se but that is not my goal anyways. Do you believe the Velo would outperform a Hsu STF-2 OR an Outlaw LFM-1 Compact in my new room? The small footprint of the Velo would also help w/placement as the room is kinda small.

Sorry, guess we all get carried away sometimes. Perhaps in the future I will try to write better. My bad.

Hey blue and thanks for posting. Yeah the 3.3 was a charmer for sure. The 2.3 is tempting to say the least. Who knows what I will end up with.
