Hey all,

Just picked up a new Denon 3808CI and I want to slowly start replacing my 10 year old speaker setup. Currently I have no sub, and I think this is my best bet for the first piece.

Since I have to spend quite a bit as I have to buy a whole new setup eventually, I'd like to stick around $500 or so.

In this price range, will I get a good quality sub? As much as I'd like to get a killer sub for a couple grand, the fact is, I'll never really be able to utilize it fully as I live with 3 room mates that will cry up a storm if it's up to loud. Still, I definitely want a quality sub that has some power.

I'm open to all suggestions, but I'd like to try to match up a full set of speakers by the same brand if possible.

Thanks all!

Hi Dasbean. For around $500 bucks, look into the usual internet brand suspects: SVS, HSU, eD. Check http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=989316 to help you get started. Don't be concerned about matching the sub brand to the other speakers. It is meaningless.

My advice would be to up your budget to $600 (with shipping not included) and go for either mwf-15 or epik knight. Thats the price point where "serious" subs start, imo.
But if you must stay under $500, I'd go for ed a3-300 (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=102&osCsid=834ec1c9a5bba48881ff6ec456c1c818) with the upgraded ov.2 driver. I'm pretty sure it's the most powerful sub for that money, sound quality wise it's close to the top too.

what is the difference between the 13kv. 2 and the 13ov.2? Longer throw?

Yeah I can go up to $600 if it's indeed worth it ... are there any others around that range I should start looking into?

Thanks for the info

at $600, those two are the best..you might consider the ed a5-350 for $715 with free shipping, but mwf-15 got rated higher..the knight hasnt been tested yet but owners impressions are very good on it
