just got my magnavox upconverting dvd player today.

i set this in the setup menu.

1080p on
widescreen on
hdmi to dvi
progressive scan on
enhanced RGB on

now i have only watched 4 movies so far and i noticed that beowulf looks awesome as does the movie azumi import from japan.

then i tried black hawk down and leprechaun 1..

i noticed a huge amount of grain in both movies its so bad i have to turn down sharpness and its still there.

my setup is like this..

20.1 widescreen monitor spectre naga 2 1080p HDCP..was $180 on sale!!
magnavox hooked up via HDMI-to-DVI to spectre monitor set to 1080p
audio out hooked into hometheatre system
sharpness set to 1 on spectre lcd monitor

now my question is this is.. it normal for some dvd's to look like absolute crap but look ok on a regular tv hooked up via composite cable the yellow cable from the 80's??

is it my setup or do i need to run some sorta display configurator?

whats up with this grain and why didnt i notice this before?

btw 1080p mode thru hdmi is awesome!!! i cant wait to watch finding nemo.

Grain (lots of it) is inherent in Black Hawk Down. Same with other movies like Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Miami Vice, 300, etc. I.e. its intentional.

Does that monitor have the ability for you to send it a 1:1 pixel count so that it can sync to your video card? It's a 1680x1050 monitor, so it would need to convert the signal you are sending it at 1920 x1080. Try several resolutions in the player, such as 480p and 720p, and see what it does with that.

Turn off enhanced RGB unless your monitor has to have PC video levels. Don't forget to calibrate, too.

yes it can lock onto either a 1080i 1080p i checked this by pressing the info button on the lcd monitor.

1920x1280 is the resolution it said as the source..

even though this a pc monitor it has no problems using any resolution thats high-def.

i personally did not believe it could hit 1080i or 1080p but it did must been an unmentioned feature??
