I recently bought a 980 from Amazon. After using it for a while, i believe that the transport is quite noisy. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it normal?

Noisy all the time? Or only when seeking or playing menus and intro material?

You might try asking this in the 980 thread.

I'm not sure how noisy it is during actual playback, i will give it a good listen tonight.

My Oppo 980 is very quiet during playback. But at loading it is very noisy, like a cheap mechanical toy. I think that is normal. It is no highend player. But fair priced, so live with it. The most annoying with the Oppo is that it is so slow in loading.

By the way I also had a Denon 1940. That was not quiet during playback, I could hear it 3 meters away, but ok at loading.

Also had a pioneer 600. Really quiet and cheaper than the Oppo (here in Europe). Had also HDMI 1.3 with DSD out. But a nogo beause of problems with jpg photos.

My unit is making vibration/audible seeking noises. Is this normal?

If you are hearing audible noises from the DVD player when inserting or ejecting discs, when at previews or the menus of a disc, or when manually skipping chapters/titles, then the noise is normal. If, however, you hear noise during the actual playback of the main film, then your player is defective and should be replaced or repaired.

no noise while playing but yes it is extremely slow. Takes for
ever even to start CD's but at $169+S&H and the sound quality
I can wait for a few extra mins for it to load.

Just one comment. The (analog) sound quality of the Oppo 980 is for some reason in general overvalued here on the web. The cheaper Pioneer 600 is just as good. The only real advantage is the HD-JPG.

Thanks everyone. The noise is only during loading and seeking. During playback, it is pretty quiet. Should we expect the 983 to be the same way?
