View Full Version : AV123 x-plosive
D_Strasse 03-06-08, 11:43 AM Have read recently of the magic AV123 and Mark Seaton have been cooking up and was interested in people's opinions of the new x-plosive sub. I also realize it hasn't been released.
In looks to be a extreme package and seems to perform outstandingly. My question is where do people think it will stack up?
Obviously, it is only a 10" active woofer ( and passive 12") but it sounds to perform much ahead the pb10-NSD. Do people think it will match a pb12-NSD, or is that asking too much. It is supposed to go cleanly down to 20Hz, is this enough? (Might be a dumb question, but I've never owned a true subwoofer).
For pre-orders they are knocking off $100 for black and $50 for a wood finish. Is this a deal too good to pass up?
TIA.
mojomike 03-06-08, 11:58 AM I'm sure this is going to be a terrific and beautiful bargain-priced sub. I'd be confident that Seaton wouldn't dare allow it to sound like crap, but at this point it would be pure speculation as to how it will compare to a proven performer like the PB12-NSD.
It's going to be a good-looker. That's for sure.
Davidt1 03-06-08, 12:14 PM It looks like a really nice sub, but it's not cheap considering their 15'' high-performing sub can be had for $499. It better performs better than the competition for that price. I hope it has the equalization thing their older subs had.
mojomike 03-06-08, 12:27 PM I'd bet against it having eq.

The MFW-15 is $599 unless you buy 2 in which case it is 2 for $999.
Thus at $399 you are saving $200 on the X-Plosive which for many people is a lot of money especially if they are using the X-Plosive in a small room.
In my case I have a X-Plosvie on pre-order for my 8x9 room.
I doubt seriously there will be any built in EQ at this price.
Ron Temple 03-06-08, 01:44 PM Like the MFW 15, I expect it to be a superior product at a bargain price.

I have a pre-order in as well, but am just not sure if it is enough in my 2600ft3 room. But at ~$450 shipped (in Palisander) it is almost $200 cheaper than a PB12-NSD. And it supposedly outperforms the PB10-NSD which definitely isn't enough.
If it just so happens that it isn't enough juice for the room I can cancel the pre-order when first details come trickling in (hopefully). Figured it was worth the risk at this point but am definitely interested in other's thoughts.
heaneyj 03-07-08, 11:17 AM sorry for the noob question - do you have to call them to pre-order? the website doesn't seem to let you order one.
With $100 off black for a pre-order, does that make it $299 -or- is the real price going to be $499 when it is released?

You have to call and then the pre-order price is $299 + shipping, which sounds like a crazy deal if you can wait and have a smallish room.
My only concern is that a 10" will be underpowered in my 2600 ft3 room. Really debating whether to go this direction even though I have a pre-order in.
Edit: As for wait, I was told to expect it to ship in May.
CADOBHuK 03-07-08, 12:33 PM will it beat the 12" a2-300 that goes for $375 shipped?

Not sure, but in all honesty eD's are seriously ugly units. They are serious values for sure but I have significant reservations about putting something that looks like it belongs in a truck bed in my den.
I know that this doesn't bother some (or maybe a lot of) people but I am having an issue with it. And while my WAF is not a "big" factor she does have her limits as well. I mean she already has agreed to let me go with towers over sats so she should get some credit. :)
That puts me back towards this unit (possibly 2), an MWF, or maybe an PB12-NSD. I realize the mwf totally outscores the NSD but it is still quite respectable and for a sub noob like me most likely more than sufficient.
Decisions, decisions.
CADOBHuK 03-07-08, 12:59 PM I could never get the "more than sufficient", "you can't go wrong with either" etc stuff. I bought a7s-450 as my first "real" sub and a set of scanspeak revelator-based speaker kits as my first real speakers. And my income is way below "middle class". I'd be ashamed to say what it actually is.

Don't be ashamed of small income levels unless you're capable of earning more and are just lazy.
It is our responsibility to buy as much audio/video gear as possible no matter how much we spend!
Play louder, go lower, install 7.1 and hope they develop 10.1, buy those ultra high $ interconnecting cables, they're impressive. A 120 inch PLASMA is NOT too big!! Can't wait for 2090i HD
I . . . . can't . . . . HEAR YOU . . . .
D_Strasse 03-07-08, 02:09 PM OK, after much back and forth, I have cancelled my pre-order for this sub.

And changed it to an order for a black MWF. Jess at AV123 said he expects it to ship at month end. Here's hoping he is right.
CADOBHuK 03-07-08, 02:10 PM Good choice. It should be more than worth $200 extra.

I know it will be, my only "concern" is that I would have that "overpowering car bass" feeling. I mean I can't stand that crap, but Jess at AV123 assured me that that wouldn't be the case and he seemed more than knowledgable.
I am pretty excited at this point. Just glad I can stop messing with this decision.
Thanks again all.
ninefivezero 03-07-08, 03:06 PM Just don't run it at 20dba hot and you won't have that type of sound.

ninefivezero,
Could you elaborate a little, I am kinda a noob in the sub arena. Thx.

He means it will only play as loud as you turn it up. Invest in an SPL meter, calibrate your mains and surrounds, and only run your sub 3 or 4 db's "hot" (meaning only 3 or 4 db's louder than the rest of the speakers), and it will not sound like a 17 year old's Civic with the trunk full of speakers and his head full of bong residue.

Just the scene I'm looking to avoid (although back in the day that image would have been more appealing :D).
And thanks for the breakdown. Now to get me a SPL meter....
Jess Quintana 03-07-08, 04:41 PM Hi Guys,
Just poking my head in. The $299 introductory price for the $x-plosive is now gone. They are $399 in Satin black, and a bit more for veneer.
We are trying to stamp out as many MFW-15's as we can, and the x-plosive has no ship date. This product is still in development. I was hoping for May, but don't think this will happen.
It's a great product at a great price. check out the press from RMAF in October.
Cheers!
Jess

Sean Parque 03-07-08, 05:15 PM Oh, on the release date for the x-plosive - we do have an internal ETA but we are just not publishing it. Things happen, parts get delayed, whatever... so we don't want anyone sitting and waiting for a particular date. Once it is done and perfect, it will be released :D
Thanks,
Sean
Whoa, Jess is in the house. :)

Hey Guys,
Didn't mean to confuse anyone, and maybe I should have been more clear with the "expected to ship" part.
I would like to "check out the press from RMAF" but i dont know what that means... so ill just ask a few questions about the x-plosive versus the ufw/ uls 10s that are on the way from china...
Will they have the same specs? are the amps both 500 w with eq built in? which would av123 consider the better "performer" overall? Thanks for the input!

I think RMAF stands for Rocky Mountain Audio Fair, but don't quote me.

The x-plosive and the ufw/uls are completely different designs and are each sure to have their own certain advantages. The x-plosive is a very efficient, low powered ported/passive radiator hybrid and the ufw/uls is a relatively high powered, small sealed sub. I'd expect the x-plosive to have more deep bass output in the 20hz area, but the ufw/uls should have a good deal of mid and upper bass punch.
Sean Parque 03-10-08, 02:01 PM If you go to the av123 home page and do a search (upper right hand corner) for the word RMAF, the first link will take you to the page you seek (sorry, we can't post links to our site here).
Thanks,
Sean

Sean Parque 03-10-08, 02:06 PM Adding to what Mojo said, the UFW/ULW subs are designed to get the tightest, deepest bass we can from a VERY small enclosure ~13" cube at a reasonable price. The x-plosive is a larger, dual driver box. Has less amp power but that is not relevant as the custom driver is *very* efficient. There is a paper on the AV123 site called "The truth about subwoofer amplifier power ". Since I can't link, you will have to dig to find it :)
jacobms1 03-10-08, 02:55 PM Anyone know when the av123 forum will be back up?

I believe there was a server change over yesterday, and it took a while for the new server to propagate. Most people were seeing the forum again by last night from what I understand. Please check again and hit refresh on your browser.
daman4799 03-10-08, 05:12 PM Still having problems here too. I'm using a Mac maybe that is the problem.
Later, Daman
