View Full Version : Do bias lights cause any heat concerns?

I installed a couple of bias lights (13 inch GE that I saw recommended in another post) behind my almost three week old 5010FD last night. I was amazed at how much a difference it made! It really did add to the 3-d effect and clarity of what was already a fantastic picture. It helped my eye fatigue significantly as well. I would have stayed up all night long watching it if I had not had to work today!!

However, I did notice that the lights added heat to the back of the unit. Not "blistering hot", but definitely warmer than before. (I should probably mention that I did not put the lights on the unit itself, but on the wall behind the unit...I had room to do this, even though my unit is wall mounted.) I am a little concerned about the heat, and was hoping you guys could comment on it. Is there any chance of the added heat from bias lights creating a problem with a plasma set?? I definitely don't want to take a chance if anyone has had any problems with this, even though I love the looks of the light and what it does for the picture.

I use an Ideal-Lume by Cinemaquest behind my 110FD. Never noticed any heat buildup. In fact the fixture runs quite cool, but it's designed for that purpose. Heat is never a good thing for electronics, so you may want to put a little more distance between the back of the set and your lights if the panel is hotter with the lights on then off. Other option would be to try and use just one light.
