View Full Version : Looking for that "Thump" (Placement and Sub questions)

Hey all,

I recently have been building a small HT piece by piece. I started with my Amp (Onkyo 705) then bought bookshelves (User S520s).

So next logically was the sub to fill in the low frequency. My friend was selling his HSU STF 2, I had heard it, liked it, and bought it off him.

I have a TV small room, almost exactly 12 x 12, and I thought a 10" sub would provide great sound in here.

Now that I have placed it in my room, I am no so happy with the sound. It is not clean, I feel I am getting a huge bass gap between the bookshelves and the Sub. Not only this, I have completely lost any real “punchy-ness.” It just sounds tuned way to low.

I have it set to cross at 80hz with the speakers, the crossover on the sub is out, I have played with the gain, and still sounds like I am having a huge bass gap.

I am thinking either placement is the issue, or possibly the sub just doesn’t play well up to 80hz. I’m not sure.

It’s Impossible to make a real assessment without any pictures, So I’ll try to post some up tonight.

My real question is, is this sub tuned too low? If I am expecting a sub to hit hard, is this not the sub for me? It gets great extension, but I want something that will hit bass drums with authority.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks all.

This could very well be a room issue, not an issue with the sub. You may have a dip in your response due to room issues. Try experimenting with placement (a lot), and the phase control of the sub.

I think so too, and hopefully once i post the pictures people will be able to give me more insight.

Also, is it normal to loose the high end bass of a sub due to placement?

12x12 is trouble. The vtf-2 is fine up to ~120hz so it's probably a room issue. Can you measure with something?

Trouble? lol In what ways? Is this a known poor acoustic size?

Also, it is a STF 2, not VTF. Change anything?
