Price range?

The Oppo 980 at $169 is well-liked here. I've been pleased with mine.

Bill: Thanks, I was looking at the Samsung dvd 1080p, the Pioneer 400 VK, the Panasonic DVD S53K. What do you know/think about those players?

Once again,
Thanks!!!

Forget Samsung 1080p7 as its Zoran chipset is bad. Panny is average as it's Panny's proprietary chipset. Pioneer 400VK uses Mediatek and is very good for $100 or less. Philips 5982/37B is your best bang for buck ($60 with 1080p, Mediatek, DivX, Region Free, USB drive support, pillarboxing)--sometimes you can find refurbed at Phillips website for $40 shipped:

Here's something to think about: A fix pixel TV converts all inputs to its native resolution . So in this case they are are converted by the plasma to 720p or most probably to 768p. So if the DVD player converts your SD disk ( which is 480i ) to 720p then there are lots of processes involved. ...from 480i to 480p to 720p then back to 768p . Why not just output 480i and let the plasma do the rest or output 480p and let the Plasma do the rest if you feel the deinterlacer of your plasma is not as good as your DVD player.

OPPO DV-980H is a good player for you plasma TV. Since the DV-980H is also capable of outputing 480i, you can comapare the 480i resolution (let your TV does the upconverting) with the 720p resolution (DVD player does the upconverting). I tested this on my Sony XRD, OPPO player does much better upconverting job than TV does.

I am also thinking of getting the 980H for the following reasons:
a) Does a better job deinterlacing than my Panny Plasma Pro panel. I will output 480p
b) Can handle regionfree PAL . I will output PAL when the DVD is PAL encoded so that the Panny will display it with more resolution lines than NTSC ...also one less conversion process
c) Can play VOB, DVIX , etc encoded video clips
d) 7.1 channel analog output
e) Decent price for all these features :)

Your last sentence confuses me a bit (not too hard to do sometimes). You said, " why not just use 480P output and let the plasma do the rest.....quote "if you feel the deinterlacer of your plasma is not as good as your DVD". Should it have read: "if you feel the deinterlacer in your DVD is not as good as the one in your plasma"???

Seems to me folks are saying, if possible, let the TV do the..."picture improvement" for lack of a better word. BTW which, in your opinion might have the BETTER upconversion technology, .........the Pioneer 400V DVD player OR........the Panny TH50PX80U???

What I mean is for you to first try 480i from your DVD and let your plasma do the rest. If you feel that your plasma does not do as good a job of deinterlacing as your DVD player then set your dvd player to progressive scan and output 480p . Let your eyes be the final judgement of whether 480i or 480p is better. I don't have a Pioneer 400V so I cannot comment on that player. I know that my Panny 58PH10UKA does not do a very good job deinterlacing . The Toshiba HD A2 does a much better job. So for SD DVDs I output 480p . To my eyes 480p is every bit as good as upconverting to 720p or 1080i for SD material and I think sometimes better . Ofcourse for HD material I output 1080i .

BTW , you can call Oppo Digital and buy a refurbished 980H for $135 plus $12 shipping .This makes this a very good deal .
