I just got back from tweeter to look at a pioneer elite 1150 up close, and I hated it. It looked fuzzy compared to the pro 110fd, and the panasonic TH-50pz77u. Is it possible that they just had the settings weird, or a bad hookup? Or am I just seeing the 720p, 1080p difference. I was looking at it at 10 feet, with a comcast feed, and a bluray feed. everyone says the elite pro 1150 should look better then the panasonic, but the text on the espn, and discovery hd logos were almost blurry.
I Would love to get it, but this demo really turned me away.

Can't wait for the first person to blame the feed :D

The text looked blurry because of the overactive edge enhancement. You need to get the remote and turn down the sharpness. Believe it or not, this fixes all the jagged edge problems that are apparent on this display using the store settings.

I think they (Pioneer) set the 768p models up so it appears that the extra resolution makes a dramatic difference when it is actually a subtle effect.

Panasonic figured until they'd catch up with Pio they'd include on-board proprietary disruptor processors that are specifically designed to interfere with the VP of Pio panels and make them look fuzzy. :D

Or it could be the Feed ;) and then there's the other conspiracy theory that Panasonic has disruptor data packets that seek and sabotage competitor panels. Tomorrow Pio with expose Panasonic for what they've done in leading to their demise - but then again why not blame George Bush. :D

Just a bit of levity with nothing much new coming on the scene - plasma is providing for much excitement whereas RPTV threads have become a ghost town of sorts and that never ending lull after CES.

To each their own but that 77u is no comparison.

Always trust your eyes and buy what looks best to you, wether it be Pioneeer, Panasonice, Samsung or others. Disregard what "everyone" says, because in most cases the "everyone" you are referring too are just giving you their biased opinioin based on which brand they have purchased. And you know what they say about opinions!!

a quote from the HT mag. they compared the 768P Pioneer to a 50" 1080P pany plasma:

Much has been said about Pioneer's new KURO line, but when it comes down to it, the praise is much deserved. They really are that good. They aren't cheap, but if you're looking for the best picture quality in a flat panel, this is it. For that matter, you'd be hard-pressed to get a more addictive image in any TV, regardless of technology.

When you say "up close", just how close were you? If you were under 8 feet
away, then you were likely too close. Also, you have to play around with the
settings because often the default settings look like crap. Further, if it's set
in 'dynamic' mode, then it'll look really bad. I've seen an 1150 and it looks
really nice with the proper settings and viewing distance. I didn't like it at
6 feet away, though.

i should try another store then, maybe they are "uglying up" the 768p 1150's to sell more 1080's?

Strangely, I've found a few elite 'dealers' that don't have the greatest feed,
regardless of the brand. Alas, I was upset at BayBloor Radio for using an
upconverted DVD player (instead of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) for their Elite TV's.
I can't remember what the pannys were set to, but they were from a different
source (HD Cable or something), but even the pannys didn't look so hot.

Why not get a 1080p set?

forya
03-06-08, 09:17 PM
I was at tweeter and they had the panasonic on the left the 1150 on the right and the 110fd just under the 1150. They said they used component video inputs from a digital cable box, and blu ray player, and they all came from the same source. The 110fd was definatly the best and the panasonic z77u was next, followed by the "not very clear" 1150.

I doubt it. With the transition that Pioneer is going thru and the fact that 1080p sets are pretty much all over the place now, it would make sense to get those 768p sets as prettied up as they could and get them out the door as quick as possible. The longer they stay in those stores, the deeper they will have to discount them to get rid of them. And Tweeter isn't exactly in the best shape itself as a company.

forya
03-06-08, 09:51 PM
neither is pioneer, with both company's doing bad, maybe they will have to slash and burn almost to squeeze that extra cash out just to stay afloat?

I went to another store in Allentown Pa on my way home from work today, and saw a 1150 next to a 110fd and They both looked great, so I bought the 1150 for 2,299. I have to wait 2 weeks for my construction to get done to try it out. But I got a PS3 with it.

Congrats! MSRP pricing is only allowed here are the rules.
Besides if we wanted to keep it honest you should mention the total price taxes etc ;)

What store did you go to? Audio Images?

That would have been my next guess. :)
If you ever find yourself near the area again and haven't been to Audio Images, you should stop in.
It is just north about a mile on McArthur Rd. from the mall.
Great guys and awesome equipment.
They only carry Pio. plasmas and PJ's.(no lcd's or crappy plasmas:))
They also have nice audio equipment that runs the gamut.

I will, I might be looking at some audio stuff. I did buy the 1150 at tweeter already though. I don't get up there that often for work, but I might go up to a show at the crocodile rock next friday

roman:

in tax free NH I can pick up a 1150HD at $2180 total because I did a price match and I was going to pick it up on Monday in a station wagon.

If the 5020FD is $3500 or less by the end of the year... and if this will be my only TV for years to come... shouldn't I wait it out seeing that I will be getting 1080P and a brighter Plasma than the 1150? It would be good to know how much brighter the 5020 will be.

and because the 1150HD is an elite... will it have better color accuracy potential than the 5020FD?

In your case you probably could wait it out. I had a flood in my basement, and am currently looking at a 1988 27in crt sdtv, so I needed something now. If I could wait I probably would, because even if the new models arn't all that, the 1150, and the 110fd will be that much cheaper

I picked up my 1150HD at Tweeter in Delaware last Sunday. Trust me, there are so many settings that you can make it as Dim or Bright as you want it to be. I find new features on this set every day.

I've had this set for a week now after trading in a 55"sxrd and I couldn't be happier. I feel like I'm seeing all my Bluray movies for the first time with this set as compared to the Kds55a2020i was using. I truly can't see how anyone could complain about the picture on this set-at least if it's set up correctly. I've never seen blacks this deep on any television before. The colors are also so close to being real to my eyes that it truly feels like I'm watching thru a window at times.

Well, that's no good. When I had the opportunity to see the 1150, I was completely blown away by it, but then again it was being fed PoTC on the Pioneer BD player via HDMI. In fact it looked just as good as the 110 next to it receiving the same signal from 9' away.

How did you do the price match? What store did you price match to? Which Tweeter in NH was this at? I would love to get it at that price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

:D
At first I wouldn't have believed it. It probably is not common but at least one major B&M retailer in my area does "tune down" their 720p and "tune up" their 1080p displays. In one case (both Panys) the two displays were in torch mode but the 720p had all detail enhancements cranked to the max as well. The lousy text was the first thing that everyone would notice and of course the salesperson would then reference the 1080p which cost significantly more. I went back at a more quiet time and that is when I was able to check the seetings to see why there was such a difference.

Personally, seeing any display at a major retailer doesn't have much influence over me unless I can adjust the settings, preferably with a source (IE: DVD) of my choosing.
