I stive to reach the "novice" level. If I can make sense of it, anyone can. wallace rabies_70 03-10-08, 11:53 PM It's on Curt's site, but its Graham in Australia that sells it. I found it to be extremely helpful. I've only set up three projectors from scratch, all my own and after watching this and going through step by step, I am still glad I paid the money for it. Reading about how to set one up and then seeing someone do it only helps. Yeah 40.00 for a blank DVD would be expensive, but you're paying for the guys experience and I thought it was a fair price for what he gave me. IMHO newbieDAN 03-11-08, 01:41 AM Have you ever had a quote for a 'professional calibrator' to come out a setup a projector Raster? you'd be up for many many hundreds of dollars. $40 is laughably cheap IMHO. And yes I do have it, and yes they've used my 'review' for their advert, doesn't change the facts thats it's an insight into tricks-of-the-trade, that your never going to be exposed to unless you've paid the $100's entry fee. Good marketing, good product. kal 03-11-08, 09:55 AM Link to the reviews: http://www.curtpalme.com/SetupDVD.shtm Official thread on the setup DVD: http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4346 I had Graham send me a copy of the disc so that I could check it out. I just realized my own review isn't listed there so I've added it. Here are my thoughts on it: "Just got my DVD and am about 1/2 way through it... Not to boast but I've set up my fair share of CRT projectors (different models, different types), and have written a lot of the content for Curt's site here so I didn't think I'd learn much from the DVD, but I wanted to see what it was all about since everyone's saying good things about it. The first thing that struck me was: GRAHAM REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF! Wow! Good work! What I didn't expect was that it's not just a DVD that explains "what do I do" but also goes into the "why is it done" and "what's the story behind this" and the "what's the historical reason for that". Again, good job Graham! The topics are items that I have a good handle on, but you know what? Watching someone else with a ton of CRT experience set up a projector from start to finish is really refreshing and eye-opening. They don't always do things the exact same way as you so it's really interesting/refreshing. Watching it felt like I was sitting around having a beer with Graham talking shop. I'm sure Curt and the other techs would get a real kick out of this! The last thing I didn't expect was for it to be entertaining! Graham's a funny guy! Now this is by no stretch of the imagination a comedy or anything, but I found myself chuckling along half the time as Graham and his friend talked/cursed about all things CRT. Again, good work Graham! P.S. When's the director's cut or special anniversary edition coming out with the bloopers? :)" - Kal (curtpalme.com webmaster) ecrabb 03-13-08, 03:56 PM ( how do you copy protect a DVD ????? ) Graham, in a practical sense, there is no such as a copy protected DVD anymore. When DVD first came out, you could encrypt the disc with CSS. For better or worse (depending on who you are) CSS was cracked years ago. Since then, CSS encryption isn't even a speed bump on the way to copying a DVD. People who don't understand value and want to steal will get the job done. Copy protection mechanisms serve only to inconvenience the legitimate users accomplishing nothing with respect to the stated goal of preventing copying. Why any studio would even bother to pay the CSS licensing fees anymore is beyond me. Raster, pony up the cash and buy the disc ya cheap-skate. You're buying information and education, not just a DVD. Remember paying $120 for a book in college? This is like that, only unlike the book, you'll feel good about the money you spent. I certainly did. SC raster 03-14-08, 12:57 AM Yes Dan i had a pro installer do a complete setup when I first got a PJ. He helped hang it from the ceiling, run cables in the attic, mount it, set it up etc. It really looked great. That was a lot of work. We had to lift it up on a vaulted ceiling. It was like $350 but he was there a long time, and came back a few weeks later to check the settings. Since I was new to the crt field, it was money well spent. SC remotebandit 03-14-08, 03:17 AM Ohh well , back onto the topic , the DVD goes through ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING and if Graham got a bit excited and went a bit over our heads on things , the other guy in the video ( Mathew ) brought it all back to the noobies so yes it does cover it for everyone . I thought i was pretty cluey on my G70 and knew 90% of what the DVD mentioned but theres a section on Astigmatism settings , after playing with that setting , my G70 improved noticably as i finally got my scan lines to focus on all colours to the same width hence perfect convergence and if you dont know what that is , Graham explains what it is and how to set it . Like everyones saying , its a cheap price to pay to improve the projector . :) Adam PS ... For that price you even get to see Mathews dad do a cameo for a lunch call .... absolute classic ... lol armstrr 03-15-08, 10:13 AM is this dvd particular to sony guys or would ehome guys get some use out of it...it would be nice to do a version specific to ehome, no? also, i think a friend of mine said he bought one a while ago and it was pal. does he have nstc versions or do you need a region free player? kal 03-15-08, 10:28 AM is this dvd particular to sony guys or would ehome guys get some use out of it...it would be nice to do a version specific to ehome, no? also, i think a friend of mine said he bought one a while ago and it was pal. does he have nstc versions or do you need a region free player? You need to take a look at Graham's order page: http://www.curtpalme.com/SetupDVD.shtm All the answers are there: "I have a Barco 808s and an Ampro 4300 and if like me you are quite new to CRT and have never really gone under the hood, get this DVD. The setup is for a Sony, but the principles are very much the same I could say, astig is really difficult for me, even after people explain it, once you see it done it helps a lot though. On my Ampro I really needed a hand with astig! The step by step procedure is thorough, you don't feel like you have missed out on anything, this DVD is worth every penny, pence or cents." - Incova "I thought I'd just chime in and say that this DVD is a great piece of work! It's geared at Sony projectors, but could actually be very useful for any novice who is about to set up any CRT for the first time. Many basic principles could be understood quickly by viewing this DVD! Recommended!" - Arioch "I can highly recommend this DVD for a beginner. Even though it didn't relate to my [Marquee 9500] Ultra's or a blend... it did make it more comfortable for me to see someone else with experience at work, which seemed to bridge the gap for me and give me enough confidence to start doing things and knowing that I was on the right track." - Gino This DVD is region free and recorded in PAL format on a DVD-R. Any player made in the last 5 years should not have a problem playing this disc (including players in North America or other countries where NTSC is the primary format used). |
