My Dad was hooking up his new surround sound to his Vizio and he said that he could only get sound coming out of his surround sound system while watching movies and not actual TV.

In the manual it said something about using optical cables to get sound from the speakers while watching TV. Is this true?

I have a PS3, Onkyo 605 receiver, and I'm most likely getting DirecTV HD DVR. I was planning on running HDMI from all of my stuff into the receiver and then one HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Will this work for getting sound from all of my speakers for everything (watching DVD/Blu-Ray, watching TV on DirecTV, playing PS3)?

He would need optical cable connects from a cable box to a receiver in order to hear DD5.1 sound if his receiver doesn't have HDMI. It won't sound as good as dvd but still better than 2-chanel.

In your set up, it works as long as the receiver has enough HDMI inputs.

Cheers,
TP.
