View Full Version : Where's the bass? Is something wrong?

I just setup my first 5.1 HT system (all PSB Image series speakers and an PSB 6i sub). They are all connected to an old Marantz AV500 preamp receiver. This in an open basement room roughly 12x16.

I am not hearing the bass that I was hoping for. I barely hear any bass when listening to a CD and only a little bass when watching a movie.

This is my first HT and I really am not sure how to configure things. I currently have all the setting on the sub set to the default settings (volume, crossover, etc).

I have the sub connected to the receiver with a single RCA cable. I don't see any settings on the receiver that allow me to specify speaker size, etc.

There is "Bass EQ" button on the receiver that has the following values: "Off", "3 db", "5 db", "7db" - What should I set it out?

Could my problem be the old Reciever just doesn't send the Bass to the sub?
Would it help to use Speaker Wire to connect the sub instead of the RCA cable?
Would I get a drastic improvement when I upgrade my Receiver?

Thanks for any help.

Spend some time going through the home theater 101 thread. It should have all the answers you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply. I did spend a lot of time reading the "Setting Up Your SubWoofer 101" but a lot of the information was related to configuring your receiver and it appears my old receiver doesn't support those type of configurations. I'll try the "home theater 101" thread next.
