heythere 08-05-09, 03:21 PM Heythere nathan 118. It was so easy to do right off the camera. Just click on the file name twice and rename it. But I just added the name of the scene for example sunnysunday right after the file name "DVM002sunnysunday". My thinking is if I go back and take the sunnysunday out I might be able to get it back. Another thing is I copied the SD version of clips to a DVD and played it on my DVD player. It flickers. Plays on my PC perfectly but not on my DVD player. Can this be corrected? thank you.. heythere
rtalley55 08-07-09, 08:27 AM I would appreciate any insight to this frustrating situation. When viewing still images on the camcorder, they look fine. i.e. faces are bright. When the images are trasferred to my PC (via the Sony software included with the camcorder), they appear much darker. Faces which looked fine on the camcorder screen are now much too dark.
I know that there are tools to lighten the images on the PC, but that is a time consuming process. I would prefer that the image as it appears when taken would be what we get when we transfer it for printing on the PC.
I would greatly appreciate any insights to this situation!

I would turn down the brightness on your camera LCD so it more closely matches what you're seeing on your PC (assuming your LCD there is calibrated correctly). So assuming your PC is fine, turn down the brightness on your camcorder lcd, and then you'll get a better representation of how it really looks.

Yah, if all you did was add to the filename, take it back off. Weird that it won't even show up on the camcorder though with a different name. Might be breaking some kind of cataloging or database something or other the camera is doing with the files. No idea.
How exactly did you make the dvd? What rogram? Flickering usually sounds like the field order is wrong. You want top field first, not bottom. Otherwise, there's just something wrong about how you're making the DVD that it isn't compliant.
Sounds like PMB will fix both your issues. Why aren't you using it?
jmorisey 08-08-09, 10:55 AM I do this using:
Sony Vegas Pro
Exclaibur plugin for Vegas
ReNamer
If you drag the clips directly from the cam to Windows explorer then the original time/date shows up in explorer as "date Modified".
I use ReNamer (a batch renamer program) to rename the clips with the "date Modified"
Import the clips to Vegas and use the "quick labels" option in Excalibur to create an overlay time line of each clip name (in this case the clip name is the time/date) complete with region markers.
Use the "export regions as subtitles" script (supplied with Vegas) to export the overlay time line as subtitles to burn with your disk.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I can't figure this out...
I have the Sony Vegas Pro 9.0a 64bit demo and a excalibur demo. When I use the quick labels, I am not seeing my time stamp.
Any help would be GREAT!!!
Thanks,
Jon
brewer09161987 08-08-09, 04:51 PM it seems whenever i take videos at night that the video shows fuzzy. does anybody have any clue why it does that

It's artifically brightening it using "gain" and ruining it. Go into the video settings and pick "twilight" mode. This will use zero gain. Or, use the front knob and turn the exposure down. Your video will get darker, possibly too dark to use, but it will look proper. Just get more light.
brewer09161987 08-08-09, 07:42 PM it worked. thanks a bunch. any suggestions on a light?
brewer09161987 08-08-09, 07:56 PM and a microphone too

- Select your main track and highlight the first event on that track (this is important)
-open quick labels and position the text box to your liking.
-make sure "transparent background" is checked
-then go ahead and click the go button (the quick label button)
cdninsw 08-10-09, 09:12 AM Hi guys.
We are going to be shooting some "on location" soon for a web music video show. I need to plug a handheld microphone into the hdr-sr11.
I've tried plugging Shure Beta 58A (dynamic - XLR) and a Shure Beta 87A (condenser - XLR) into the HDR-SR11 mini mic jack. Got NO sound.
Tried going through a mic pre-amp, still no sound.
What is the proper way to connect a "regular" microphone into this camcorder?
Thanks so much,
Roger:confused:
nathan118 08-10-09, 12:47 PM and a microphone too
I personally don't have an external light...but I don't think anything that would attach to a camera would matter much. I just try and turn on as many lights as I can, open the blinds, that sort of thing.
As for a microphone, I have the sony made external, the ECM-HGZ1. It works really well, and eliminates any handling noises the internal picks up. It will only give you stereo though, instead of the internal surround, but that doesn't bother me. Here's a link (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11038016&tab=featuresTab).
If you're in the market for accessories, I would really look into a wide angle lens. I have the VCL-HG0737C, but they don't make it anymore. It's made by Sony, and it's great...so I'd check out the wide angles they make now that will fit 37mm.

It offers the choice (switch on the side) of either being the centre track in a 5.1 surround (the other tracks are picked up at the camcorder) or being the sole collector in stereo. It works by bluetooth and has a good range of about 20 meters or so. One downside is that you have to be careful to turn it off so that you don't use the batteries and the mic pick-up means that you have a grey golf ball sized box on top of the camcorder.

Yeah Nathan118. I didn't use PMB. Now I'm trying to import from xternal to PMB to make a DVD copy but can't. Even after registering it on PMB. Now the files are SD files and all have the logo of GOM player which I use to play them. Is that a problem, automatically having SD files to play with GOM player so that they don't import to PMB. The reason why I don't use PMB is it take way too long. thanx heythere
heythere 08-11-09, 09:55 PM Whoever told me to drag and drop off computer because it takes too long using PMB is a real bad idea!!! Now I can't even make a DVD disk because they are no longer available off my smart stick. Yes I have the files on external hard drive but they are no good to upload to my PMB.PMB does not recognize the file.It looks as though you'd have to use PMB to create a playable disk. I don't know what to do now. How do I create a disk off my external hard drive. I can play them perfectly on my PC but since I can't use PMB or Nero program,I'm running out of options.
Gone Cruising 08-12-09, 01:49 AM Hello, I am hoping anyone can help. I purchased an HDR-SR11 on 5/17/08 and everything was perfect. I recently re-formatted my pc today and went to install PMB (have done this several times over the past year with no issues) This time my SR11 screen shows "preparing" and is stuck on that.
I tried re-installing Vista 32bit 2 more times, same issue. I tried to see if my pc would detect the camera like it always has and nothing detected, nothing for a removable drive in my computer. Hit USB connect and still shows preparing. Tried all USB ports...still nothing.
Tried the SR11 on 3 of my other pc's (XP and Vista) and still does the same. Sony wants $311 to repair. The camera works fine other than no detection by any pc.
Is there something im missing?
Thank you for your help...I have a wedding to video next weekend....

heythere 08-12-09, 03:06 PM Have you tried to unhook all the hardware hooked up to your USB and Firewire? of course other than your camcorder. I had the same problem with recognizing the camera. If you have other such as external hard drive hooked up, unhook them first. See if that works to resolve your problem. take care. Now help me with my issue. Can't make a DVD....Help heythere

What is GOM player? I know PMB doesn't play nicely with haali media splitter (used for mkv files). Maybe your problem is a software problem? Get rid of GOM player and see what happens.

We're talking about different microphones. The ECM-HGZ1 is a shotgun microphone that only works on the hotshoe...it's not bluetooth.

That's strange. I would say try updating PMB and try a different USB cable. Are you using the little "base" where you set the camera on it? You can just try a regular usb cable with a mini connector.
Otherwise, are you using the internal hard drive or memory sticks? What you can do is use the memory stick, and then when it's full, plug that into a USB card reader that accepts memory sticks, and PMB will recognize it and everything (that's what I do). Would definitely be cheaper than $300.

I think August is talking about the HW1 or HW2 mic (wireless blue tooth mics on hot shoe)
heythere 08-14-09, 02:55 PM Yeah Nathan118. Problem continues. Tried to make a achvs disk by but it stops at the 82% point each and everytime. Was able to make a SD disk successfully but this 12 minutes file stoped playing at around 7th minutes. Remember I'm able to play them right off my external hard drive but making a copy seems almost impossilble. The MTS(HD) file, unchanged file name I was attempting to make last night just stoped at the 82%. I don't know. If I'm able to play all the files right off my external Hard drive off my brand new laptop..dual core p7350 I'm purchasing from a HDMI port into a HD TV I'm fine with it. I know the reason I can't play HD file off my PC now is because my PC is old and sluggish. what do you thanks. heythere

Can you make an AVCHD disk with a brand new video file (just to determine if it's because you renamed it or because of PMB or something)? I haven't used PMB for anything other than importing, and unfortunately Vegas isn't being very helpful either!
heythere 08-16-09, 12:45 AM I will try with footage I have on my camcorders hard drive. They are so big I think so I'd have to just shoot a smaller file. A few minutes file. Let you know how it works. It's so strange when making a HD disks. Always stops at 82% point. Do you think my PC is just damn slow. It is after all 5 years old. Pentium 3 or 4. thanks have a good one. Heythere
kemp707 08-16-09, 12:23 PM Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am EXTREMELY GREEN when it comes to video and copying/editing. The extent of my video experience pretty much has been using my normal digital camera to take quick videos and saving them just like all the other pictures.
I purchased the HDR-SR11 about a year and a half ago when my wife became pregnant with the hopes of getting some very good quality videos. My sister got married a few weeks after purchasing the camera and thought that would be a great opportunity to test out the new unit! ....... I have failed miserably at trying to save the files and convert them so she can see them.
I've tried and tried and tried but each time I run into some new problem that sends me scampering away. But now Im at the dilemma....... I haven't deleted any of the clips for fear that I have not done something right while saving them... but now the handycam's hard drive is almost full!! And im not really in the mood for buying a bunch of SD cards :)
Anyone have any suggestions for these problems?
1) I have saved some of the older files to folders or locations that I cannot find anymore or someone has deleted on accident. But I have not deleted them from the camera (can still watch them on the camera screen). But when I try to redownload them the program does not recognize they are there on the camera anymore. Is there something within PMB or the camera I can toggle or set to re-save these videos?
2) Converting the files to something most people can watch on their computers as well as being able to post the videos on blog sites and/or youtube. Is this something PMB can do? Or do I need to get another software program?
3) Using PMB to browse through saved pictures and videos..... some of the old saved files no longer show a picture within the file... just a white box with a big X in it. File name is the same just cant open the picture or movie anymore. Uhhh... help?
4) it seems now that multiple file names have popped up for just about everything... pictures and videos... even double folders. All just within PMB but looking at them through windows explorer everything looks normal. One of the folders shows pictures or videos... the other folder shows a bunch of blank file boxes with big X in the middle. How did those duplicate folders show up and is there a way to get rid of them without damaging the true pictures?
Like I said earlier I am super new to video stuff and am just looking for something very simple to use so that I can save the files from the camera to my computer, maybe do minor editing to cut out the junk, and save them to a format most people can view who do not have special video programs. Any suggestions for software I should use that's not going to cost $1000?
I sure hope there is something out there easier to use than this PMB program! Or Im in serious trouble. Maybe I should use a camera that doesnt record in AVCHD?? Or go back to my old trusty digital camera.
KingCobrasvt_99 08-16-09, 09:31 PM BUmp... sorry guys im trying to get my post count up so I can start a thread.

I have gotten somewhere, I think... I have figured out the QuickLabel process, but it just shows a new event that is blank. I am trying to get thhe original Date/Time from the .modd file, is this possible, or do I have to manually put the info in?
I Like how it is there on the camera, I just wish there was a simple way to copy it over.
bigbarney 08-17-09, 06:05 PM Quick labels has the ability to automatically copy the NAME of the clip(s) to the time line. What you need to do is get a batch renamer and rename all of your clips with the time/date.

From within PMB (and without the camcorder connected), go to File and Register Viewed Folders. Ensure that you see listed the directories on your PC where you know that the m2ts files are.
In PMB, when you see the white box with a big X, it means that you have deleted/moved the file to another directory. If you click on the box, PMB will ask you to delete the management file information from the PMB database. You should say yes and this will clean up PMB's registry. (This will not delete the actual m2ts video clips.)
You should then connect the SR11 to your PC, start PMB and choose File Import, Handycam Utility and then Media File Import. At this point, you should see all the clips on your SR11 as icons. Import those that you want to your PC to a directory registered with PMB.
If you want to create a DVD to play on any TV (Standard Definition resolution), in PMB, go to Manipulate, DVD-Video (SD) Creation and follow the instructions.
kemp707 08-23-09, 11:29 PM thank you!!!! that worked! I was always afraid it was going to delete the files but looks like its just a tag within the program.
appreciate it very much!
Hello,
Where in the menus will I find the shooting programs where I can select Twilight mode? Thanks,
rhulett 08-25-09, 06:56 AM I can't find the disks that came with the camera, so I downloaded PMB from Sony's website. Did what it was supposed to do, and did successfully make an AVCHD dvd that looked really good.
I've looked back through, alhough not the entire thread, and I've seen Vegas mentioned as well as Pinnacle. I can't afford Vegas, and the reviews on Pinnacle aren't the best. I downloaded a trial of Ulead's Video Studio last night, and it seems very confusing, and failed to make a video that would play in the bluray player. It seems slow, playback of the video off the camcorder seems choppy, but it did look like a decent entry level editing software.
Anybody else have any other recommendations for software, preferably in the $50-$100 range?

Vegas Platinum has worked great for me so far. I've only edited short clips, because rendering is painful on my P4, but it seems to be able to do anything I'd ever need. It's also not very hard to jump into and do basic things, and once you start getting into it more advanced features aren't too bad either.
odiggity 08-28-09, 08:24 AM I have also been using vegas platinum and been happy with it. I think they sell a bundle with dvd architect and cinescore plugin (which is a joke, it is useless)
la_panza 08-28-09, 02:17 PM Hello all, apologize for the silly question, I can't find a way to delete videos and pictures from the camcorder's hard drive while it is connected to the PC.
PMB utility shows me how to import stuff, but not how to remove it from the camcorder once imported.. I tried to delete files directly on the disk, but this removal is dirty, an "empty box" still stays there.
Acting directly on the camcorder to delete old material works, but it's uncomfortable...
is it a clean file managing tool that does sometning more than importing?
please help
rhulett 08-28-09, 03:23 PM Thanks guys for the replys. I'll check out Vegas Platinum this weekend.

To SR11 Owners... Try recording something loud e.g. Formula 1 race, live music band, in car video, etc. The camera will always get a buffer overrun error. See this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1021935
It would be interestig to hear from others who have had this problem.
Cheers!

Only had that happen once. Now I turn off the drop sensor in loud environments. Seems to work because it hasn't happened again.
heythere 09-07-09, 04:20 PM Heythere. A question for you. Are you able to play your HD files(MTS) on DVDs in your DVD drive? Is it necessary to have a Blue ray player to play HD. I have a pentium 4 with 2 gigs memory, very old. Everytime I attempt to play my HD files, my PC simply shuts down. thank you. Heythere

You'll need a blu-ray player to view HD. One cool thing is you can burn AVCHD to regular DVDs and watch in full HD (on a blu-ray player). That's good because DVDs are much cheaper than blu-ray discs, but of course DVDs will hold much less video.
There are other options to view the m2ts files, such as the western digital media player which will play them directly off a usb hard drive.

Newer machines running Vista along with programs like nero (with HD pack) will play HD from a avchd disk in a normal dvd drive.... but with the machine you have I wouldn't even suggest trying to add a blu ray drive. With a p4 and 2 gigs ram the machine would do nothing but struggle either way.
I would do as a707 suggests and look at something like the WD media player. They're about $100 at best buy (or similar) and will play directly from a hard drive.

Trigger_Happy 09-10-09, 08:45 PM I have a problem with microphones and this camcorder. I love the HDR-SR11, I love it to death, but when I plug a microphone into the microphone jack, I only hear sound from the left channel. I intend to cover events with commentary and I don't want to edit 100+ videos just to balance audio. Is there a way to fix this?
In case anyone wants to know, when I plug something like a two ended jack (like the ends of a headphone), there is stereo, so it's not the input. And it's definitely not my headphones or the TVs fault, because you can only hear on the left side on anything.

Is your microphone mono? A "one ended" jack? That could be part of it. If you can record with the internal, and get stereo output, then it's gotta be your mic. I use a mic on the hotshoe, and it records just fine. That's my best idea I guess...
Fuzzybear50 09-10-09, 10:50 PM I have an SR11 that apparently has a damaged Mini-HDMI stud, I assume this originated from the weight of the HDMI cable and the poor Sony design location of the mini hdmi. I can see HD video through the Mini/HDMi cable but the video has splotches of red/green through out the picture. I tried another cable and a different HD Tv with the same result.
Anyone experience this problem? Any ideas where it can be serviced at?

I attended the 2008 Montreal F1 race and did some filming with my SR11. The only time I had this error was when all the cars pulled away from the grid as the race started. I think the combined sound of 22 F1 cars going full throttle simultaneously was just too much for the camera.
For the rest of the weekend however, the camera worked fine, during race, even with multiple cars passing directly in front of me. I was sitting about 20 rows back on the grandstands facing the pits.
If it helps, I'll post this in the other thread as well.

Trigger_Happy 09-11-09, 01:32 PM Is your microphone mono? A "one ended" jack? That could be part of it. If you can record with the internal, and get stereo output, then it's gotta be your mic. I use a mic on the hotshoe, and it records just fine. That's my best idea I guess...
Thank you, I checked and as it turns out every microphone just so happened to be mono. Such a small detail I completely forgot about.

I looked on the sony site and most of them are expensive, and although i dont mind spending the money i dont want to spend all that money for a lens if its not worth itI bought the Raynox 5050 and while it's a good lens, I regret the choice. To my eye, there's too much prism on the edge. (Then again, a friend said that I was being too precise when I pointed to the corners of a PS3 playback on a LG 1080p 46in screen of a Raynox 5050 recorded SR11 AVCHD file. IMV, it wasn't the LG screen. It was teh Raynox.)
I have learned that the SR11's native lens is fine for outside shots, if camera angles are used well. For inside shots, a wide angle lens is useful/required. I'd choose the pricier VCL-HG0737C 70mm Sony lens. It's not so wide as the Raynox 5050 but probably a better choice.

I've got one of the Sony made .7x lenses, and it's great! Check back of a few pages and I made a few posts about it. Let me know if you can't find it.

Hey folks I seem to be having the same problem here. I have the issue when looking at both the HD and standard def files from my camcorder. I've added some screen captures to show the example.
I'm running a Intel Core 2 Quad with 8 gb of ram, an Nvidia 9800gt with 1gb of memory all running in windows vista 64.
Is does not seem to mater what i use to play the files, which codec packs i use I get the same results and the same (interlacing) issues that you can see in the images. Let me know if anyone has been able to fix this or has even seen the same issue.
Thanks,
Jason

odiggity 09-21-09, 08:12 PM the signal is 1080i, so the data is already interlaced. i don't think you can correct for that. have you tried using a tripod? you should notice a reduction. You might also try rending to 720p, some of the codecs can do a decent job of de-interlacing.
But that was a major bummer for me after I bought the camera. i thought i would be able to run it at 720p, instead of 1080i, but no such luck.
i have been using sony vegas and render to 720p and it seems to be OK, i haven't notice the level of interlacing that you have. Do you have any short clips you can share? is it just when you pull stills, or is it noticeable all the time?
obricko 09-21-09, 09:16 PM I get this result regardless of the format that i record the video in. I even get the same result with mpg in SD from the camcorder. I'm also a bit confused because I've view avi hd in 1080i and i get beautiful playback. So i'm confident of my pc's ability to play hd content, it's just the content from my video camera that I have issues with...
And yes it's noticeable regardless if it's moving or or paused. however it's more noticeable when it's paused.

Well i've reinstalled the PMB and used that to look at my footage... and it looks great in there... I guess, at this time... Sony has the only codec that is capable of playing back this footage.
I've heard rumors that Windows 7 will built in codecs for playing back AVCHD footage. Can anyone confirm this?
JimmyJazzCA 09-22-09, 07:28 PM AVCHD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Windows 7 will be able to import and play AVCHD video natively, having files with extensions M2TS, MTS and M2T pre-registered in the system. ...
nathan118 09-22-09, 07:39 PM There's nothing wrong with your recorded video files...the problem is with your playback. Deinterlacing mpeg2 has gotten fairly easy....but deinterlacing AVC is still hard to do.
On the computer, your best hardware option is going to be Power DVD. I've never really used it, but it should be able to harness any hardware decoding your graphics card might have.
Otherwise, everything else is decoding using software, which usually just sucks. The best software decoder is CoreAVC (and use Haali media splitter). This looks the best to me...don't see any interlacing artifacts.
You have to think about what you'll be using to do most of your viewing. I have a PS3 and a Popcorn Hour A-110 which both do hardware decoding of AVC in an m2ts container. But there shouldn't be anything wrong with your files.
Don't know anything about what windows 7 will support...but built in hardware acceleration would be awesome. Hope that helps.
soonerfann 10-06-09, 01:24 PM PMB is now telling me it won't write my files to AVCHD. I am getting this error message.

What are you guys using instead of PMB for disc authoring?

Soonerfann,
I am getting the same error "0070-8012-8013-0000C01B" when I try to write a 1.8 Gb AVCHD file to DVD.
When I try a small 170 Mb file the error does not appear.
Did you find any clues sofar?
Or anyone else?
scorpionkill 10-14-09, 02:46 PM Hello.
Anyone else using a 35MM DOF adapter with their SR11? I use a Jag35Pro vibrating DOF adapter with Canon FD prime lenses. I have a set of Cavision 15mm rods, a follow focus, Redrock micro lens gear and a Matthews M25 tripod. I love this set up and love how the SR11 allows me to flip the LCD by using a magnet to trick the magnetic LCD switch.
I edit all my footage with Pinnacle Studio 12 (just ordered 14) on my HP Quad Core PC.
Anyway just seeing how many of you also use a DOF adapter.
mmoskon 10-15-09, 08:15 AM Scorpionkill what follow focus model do you have?
I'm sure this has been covered in this million mile long thread, but i'm not seeing any great solutions.
What process are you guys using to archive your old footage, particularly with Apple FCP, or iMovie?
Copying the contents of the entire camera into 1 folder doesn't seem like a great solution. I currently have around 40 gigs of .mts files, which is a bout 5 months of footage for me.
If i copy all of that in one folder, i don't see how to efficiently go back and arrange it into events or dates, or some structure that makes sense.
Not only that, for the other 6 months prior, i was just copying the .mts files from the camera, organizing them in folders as needed, and using voltaic to convert when i need to edit something.
Now that i'm using Final Cut Pro, which has faster and better log and transfer conversions, voltaic is even more of a pain.
I've seen that Toast 10 will create a disk image of the avchd files, but i was hoping to avoid dropping another $80 just to be able to organize my clips so that i can easily access them in the future.
Anybody using FCP figured out a good work flow for this?
Ideally, i would love to create my own folders on my mac, stick the .mts files that were part of that day of shooting and be able to access them later via fcp.
Thanks!
For those of you on macs who have been frustrated with how amazing the footage from the SR11 looks on the camera and how crappy it looks when you put it on your computer, i have 3 words for you...Apple Intermediate Codec.
I tried just about everything out there not wanting to drop the $1k on Final Cut Pro. After i year of frustration, i bit the bullet and literally bought FCP just so i could use the ProRes intermediate codec.
What an amazing difference. The footage looks so much better now. The deal is that AIC (which is what you're forced to use with iMovie and FCE) really butchers the quality of the file when it does it's intermediate conversion.
Dunno if anybody else has been frustrated with this, but i can tell you, FCP is significantly different with this camera.
nathan118 10-24-09, 12:13 PM I'm happy to report that I'm now running Windows 7, and not only are the .m2ts files from the camera recognized, but they are HARDWARE ACCELERATED! Windows 7 is using my Geforce 8800 GTS to hardware accelerate the interlaced AVC, and they look awesome!
talbain 10-28-09, 12:46 PM I'm happy to report that I'm now running Windows 7, and not only are the .m2ts files from the camera recognized, but they are HARDWARE ACCELERATED! Windows 7 is using my Geforce 8800 GTS to hardware accelerate the interlaced AVC, and they look awesome!
how do you know that?
nathan118 10-28-09, 06:12 PM Because my eyes can tell the difference between software deinterlacing and hardware. I used to use CoreAVC to software deinterlace, and this looks even better.
Well I tried to prove it...and I'm not sure I can. I can't find a single app to monitor GPU usage on an nvidia card. So instead I looked at CPU usage on my Quad-core 2.4ghz...
An xvid file took about 5% cpu. A 720p MKV (with AVC inside) took about 15%. A 1080i mpeg2 file took about 10%. The .m2ts off my camera took about 25%. So it's definitely using the cpu for something....but I would expect a LOT higher to deinterlace 1080i AVC.
I've played with deinterlacing both 1080i mpeg2 and AVC quite a bit, so my eyes are pretty good at what looks right (hardware decoding) and what looks close to right (software decoding).
Any other ideas on how to find out for sure? I'll do some looking...
talbain 10-28-09, 07:39 PM i ask because i know there are specific applications that will take advantage of hardware acceleration for dvd playback (windvd 10, powerdvd), but yours would be the first account of 1) windows media player using it and 2) the hardware acceleration being applied to avchd files
nathan118 10-28-09, 09:15 PM Right, and I think the new stuff built-in to windows 7 is what's harnessing the GPU. Here's some info on Media Foundation.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb970511(VS.85).aspx#format_support
But this would be a TON easier for someone to test who has an ATI card.
talbain 10-29-09, 02:35 PM are you referring to directcompute in dx11? if so it's definitely not enabled yet for wmp
nathan118 10-29-09, 07:15 PM I'm referring to Media Foundation....it's replacing Directshow filters.
nathan118 11-06-09, 12:38 AM Wanted to add that I have PMB working fine in windows 7. Installed 3.0, and got it upgraded to 4.2. Works fine.
I watched a few more files of the camera in windows 7...and it's strange. It will be butter smooth...but every now and then it stutters a little. So I don't know if the drivers/implementation are still early, but I'm not sure what it's doing.
Anyone with an ATI card able to try this on Windows 7 and report what the GPU is doing?

I have this light and it is adequate. It uses the cameras battery, since it doesn't have its own, which gives you 50% life when it is on. It is onyl good upto say 10' max, but it really helps reduce the noise when shooting indoors at night with ambient light.
I believe the shoe that it mounts to is a standard connector.

The difference is in 1440 the pixels are squares that get stretched to a rectangle on playback versus 1920, where it is a square, there are more pixels to get the 16x9 aspect ratio.
Does it mean any change is quality of picture or ratio (dragged pic) when played in 16X9 HD TVs ?
I have HDR-SR11 camcorder and 46-XBR6 HD TV. For the first time, a week back, I connected both using a miniHDMI cable and played the video without any issues. I tried to change few setting like change Movie REC from HD FH to HD SD etc on camcorder after this first run.
But when I tried to play again, since yesterday, I am getting ‘Invalid Signal'.
HDMI cable works fine, and using component cable, I can play Videos on TV from Camcorder, but issue is when I try to play using miniHDMI cable.
Can anyone please advise on what could be wrong ?
You help is much appreciated.

simple sam 04-07-10, 11:34 AM Hi there.
I would like to edit raw footage from my Sony HDR-SR11 in Premiere Pro CS4, but am unsure of what Presets to use when I am initially opening up a Project. I filmed at AVCHD 16M (FH) (1920X1080), and I am in Canada.
Here are the options:
1. AVCHD 1080i25 (50i) Anamorphic
2. AVCHD 1080i25 (50i)
3. AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic
4. AVCHD 1080i30 (60i)
Anyone know which one to choose? I'm pretty sure it's option #4.
Cheers,
David

NewTek's SpeedEDIT 2.0 It's the fastest video editing software I've ever seen. Definitely not immune to crashing, but it makes up in speed of performance and creative capacity what it lacks in reliability. Plus, is saves every click you do so if it crashes, you just restart it, go back to the project & click 'Redo All Operations' & its back to where you left off.
simple sam 05-08-10, 12:57 PM Hi there.
I put up a post a couple months ago regarding the presets to use for my HDR-SR12 footage, and I have a couple more questions....
I am editing my footage in Premiere Pro CS5. I filmed at AVCHD 16M (FH) 1920x1080. When I click on the footage and choose properties it shows:
Image Size: 1920 x 1080
Pixel Depth: 32
Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - 6 channels
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - 6 channels
Average Data Rate: 1.8 MB / second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
My options for presets are:
1080i25 (50i) Anamorphic
1080i25 (50i)
1080i30 960i) Anamorphic
1080i30 (60i)
1080p24 Anamorphic
1080p24
1080p25 Anamorphic
1080p25
1080p30
I have been choosing 1080i30 (i60) up til now, but when I export to MPEG-2 DVD the video has an awful trail behind any motion and the quality is not so great.
I also tried exporting to High Quality Progressive and the quality was good and there was no trailing effect after any of the motion. That led me to think that I should be using 1080p30 as the preset, but there seems to be more people that believe the HDR-SR12 is not progressive.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
David
simple sam 05-08-10, 01:04 PM One other question....

nathan118 05-08-10, 01:30 PM One other question....
Is it best for me to record at SD when I plan to burn to DVD? I'm having a lot of difficulty converting AVCHD to a nice quality SD for DVD.
David
My belief is that you might as well record at the BEST recording possible, and then downconvert. I've never done any actual tests on this, but I'm not sure why you wouldn't be getting a good quality for SD. If there's a "trail," it sounds like a field order problem. I agree, the 1080i60 choice is right for the preset, but what are your mpg output settings?
And the camera is absolutely not progressive. Your progressive output looked good, because well, it was progressive, which makes me think you had a field order problem when you exported non-progressive (I don't export anything progressive though, because it never looks as smooth as the original interlaced).
So either your preset has the field order backwards, or your export has it backwards. Try messing with that.
simple sam 05-08-10, 10:36 PM Hi nathan118
Thank you so much for the quick response. I've been having trouble getting an answer that applies directly to my situation, so I greatly appreciate it.
So I did what you suggested, and here's where I'm at...
There are no options to set the field order in the presets, so I played around with them in the export settings. Upper has the worst results, lower isn't bad and 'using source setting' isn't bad... but they can be quite 'square-ish' around the outlines of a person's body. I'm not sure if I'm describing it well, but it's like the old atari video games - they had a squareness in the graphics - that's what it looks like sometimes, particularly with lots of movement.
I'll give you more info to work with. I chose non-anamorphic for the preset. I chose the quality to be the highest, with the box for 'Use Maximum Render Quality' checked. VBR, 2 Pass, Target Bitrate 7, Max Bitrate 8.
I have left the box for 'Use Frame Blending' unchecked and the Display Format has 'Drop Frame' checked, rather than 'Non Drop Frame'.
I have also left the box beside 'Render at Maximum Depth' unchecked.
Thanks again. I hope this helps!
Cheers,
David
simple sam 05-09-10, 08:00 PM Hello again.
So I have adjusted my settings in many different ways now... lowered the quality from 5 to 4, raised the minimum bitrate from 2.8 to 4, checked 'Render at Maximum Depth' and the artifacts are still there.
Are you absolutely sure that my video is not progressive? Because all exports I have made with interlaced settings have artifacts and the progressive video doesn't have them.
I've attached screenshots of my sequence settings and export settings, if that helps.
Thanks!
David
simple sam 05-09-10, 08:01 PM Oh, and the sequence settings confirm that the field order should be set to 'Upper'.
Thanks again.
David
August1991 05-11-10, 09:57 PM One other question....
Is it best for me to record at SD when I plan to burn to DVD? I'm having a lot of difficulty converting AVCHD to a nice quality SD for DVD.
DavidI have played around with this in various ways. (For testing, I use Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0, a PS 3, a Samsung 1920x1080 60Hz screen, a no-name DVD player and an old CRT screen.)
In general, to get best SD results while being able to archive original HD files, I record in 1080i (HD) and then render to wmv at 1280x720 30p. I then import these files into Architect to produce the SD 720x480 DVD discs. This process takes take time and means converting into the wmv Microsoft format and then out of it. I have found however that this produces the smoothest SD moving image, playable on any DVD player. (It also conserves the 5.1 sound - still playable regardless of DVD player sound system.)
Another alternative is to use PMB to render the original m2ts file to a DVD disc but then you are severely restricted in editing.
IMHO, the main weakness of AVC-HD now is editing files.

Sorry David, haven't been back in a long time!
I'm not sure why this is so complicated. Under mpeg, there should be DVD presets. Those should work just fine. If you're using the default 1080i footage off the camera, just pick widescreen NTSC. It should be fine.
How are you playing it back that makes you think there is something wrong?
I'm a Sony Vegas guy...so my knowledge of Premiere is zilch.
gbaldes 09-27-10, 12:51 PM Hi all, I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered already. I'm using my SR12 to film football games which results in 90-100+ clips about 8-15 seconds in length. When I combine them all using latest version of Nero Ultimate and its "Smart Rendering", the resulting video in the file seems to hang from time to time (although the audio continues). The video eventually picks back up and gets back on track. It's almost as is Nero's "Smart Rendiner" is having problems with the file break between some of the clips. The same thing occurs if I burn directly to DVD. I've tried two other editors (Corel, Pinnacle) but they don't seem to "Smart Render" and as a result the quality is reduced. Any ideas on how to combine these all these clips cleanly without re-rendering?
Thanks Gary

When I combine them all using latest version of Nero Ultimate and its "Smart Rendering", the resulting video in the file seems to hang from time to time (although the audio continues). The video eventually picks back up and gets back on track. It's almost as is Nero's "Smart Rendiner" is having problems with the file break between some of the clips. The same thing occurs if I burn directly to DVD. I've tried two other editors (Corel, Pinnacle) but they don't seem to "Smart Render" and as a result the quality is reduced. Any ideas on how to combine these all these clips cleanly without re-rendering?
Thanks Gary
Well to answer my own question, the best way to "clean" the clips before combining them is to import them from the camera using Sony's latest "Picture Motion Browser" software that can be found on their website. The software allows you to import and combine them cleanly, although you have to write the results to an AVCHD disc to get a combined file. I guess the software cleans up any mess left by the camera when recording.
paul.s67 10-05-10, 10:02 AM Soonerfann,
I am getting the same error "0070-8012-8013-0000C01B" when I try to write a 1.8 Gb AVCHD file to DVD.
When I try a small 170 Mb file the error does not appear.
Did you find any clues sofar?
Or anyone else?
Can you try a DL DVD? Seriously ...

2x is needed to get by the errors (under diff circumstances, but maybe urs as well).
johnny124 10-05-10, 02:43 PM Hi all :)
Wondering if anyone could please help - just uploaded some footage to my pc, turned off camcorder (SR12E) and then turned it back on to record. However, LCD or viewfinder won't come on, and the red light above the pro duo slot flashes twice slowly, then around 7 times quickly. I guess this is an error code, but does anyone know what it represents?
Thanks :)
breckorbust 10-14-10, 08:33 PM hey there ,
i recently purchased the sr11 and i need some advice,
i use sony vegas for editing,
so i import a file to my computer, It looks full HD when i watch the raw file, and its only about 10mbs in size.
how can i render in vegas pro for the video to look the same as the raw .MTS file? if i render it in higher qualities, the file comes out as over 3 gigs!
10mbs to 3gigs? i dont understand how that works.
but im basically asking how i can render it to look the same as the raw file
cococake 10-28-10, 10:20 AM I bought a Sony HDR-SR11 last year, and really love the HD video quality, but there are two things that are really bothers me. First- " how to remove the date and time stamp from my recordings?" another question I have is " what is the best way to upload video to youtube or facebook?" usually it would say that my files are too large to upload.
Thanks so much for helping me out, so I can continue love my sony camcorder. :)

If you don't get an answer here, I suggest you ask your question in one of the Sony Vegas forums at Sony Creative Software.
If you are using Vegas Pro, this is the link:

If you are using Vegas Movie Studio, this is the link:

Explain that your camcorder records in 1920x1080i AVCHD and state the output target medium that will be your end product (DVD disc, Blu-ray disc, youtube, etc.).
Vegas can retain the original quality of your clips (or close enough you won't detect a difference) and maintain approx. the same file size. You just need to get the Vegas project properties and render settings to match what you want to do.
After being told that this forum is the best place to post my discovery, I would like to tell you guys about a recent project of mine.
I recently bought the HDR-SR11 and being the gadget junky that I am, I had to open it up. By removing only four screws I had access to the HDD. This really got my imagination going. It uses a ZIF connector, and there are solid state (SSD) drives out there that use the ZIF connection. Could the SR11/12 be converted to a solid state camcorder?
Well, I got a Samsung 64GB SSD from the big internet flea market, item 150263664824 (I cannot post URLs yet due to being new here, but this is where I got it and I don't know where else to point you. These are $1300 drives, so it was a good deal. After having it overnighted, I had the drive swapped into the SR11 in under 10 minutes. Now the moment of truth!
Oh no...a c:13:02 error! So I go ahead and format the drive through the on screen menu. The error is still flashing, so I power cycle the camera. The error is gone! I now have 467 minutes of recording time in Full HD, 948 minutes HDHQ, 1151 minutes HDSP and 1465 HDLP.
So there you have it. The first SSD solid state camera in the world, to my knowledge. Battery life should improve due to an SSD being flash-based, because there are no moving parts. Response time of the camera seems a bit improved because the disk does not have to spin up to be accessed. Any noise coming from the HDDs internal movement will be eliminated in videos.
I recently upgraded my HDR-SR11 to 64GB SSD (PhotoFast G-Monster v4) and it works great. Everything is much faster now, no noise from the drive and no more issues with buffer overflow when in loud/shaking environments.
I have pretty much brand new Toshiba 60GB drive that I pulled from SR11 if anyone needs it.
Try reducing the burn speed from the settings. You need to manually change it to the speed that is specified on the disc that you are trying to burn unto. In my case, it was 4x. I changed it and now it works.
anyone uses a 35mm adapter for sr11/12?
I have an Sr11 and I want to build a rig for it. Anyone has a pics of their rig, can you post the links? thank you in advance.
