I'm facing the death of my Epson Home Cinema 550... convergence problem, need LCD aligment and found a buyer that don't mind seeing some redish tone on right side.

I previously had a Benq 6100, a Optoma HD70 and the Epson 550... and now don't know which one to pick... Lumens aren't my top priority but have to be at least 1300. I love sharpness (PC is my source) and black as real as possible. I'm in search of a good value for money, 1000$ would be nice but if 1400$ means this is a keeper for a while...

My choice are:

- Obviously a Panasonic PT-AX200u brand new at 1400$ tx-in

- Optoma HD65 at 1100$ tx-in. Can't find a decent review! At 1600 lumens this should be a steal!

- Optoma HD72 on ebay (should go for 1000-1100$) 1300 Lumens, known to be sharp.

- Epson Home Cinema 720 at 1400$, 1600 lumens, high contrast 10000:1

I've read a lots of review... maybye too much in fact. That's why I'm asking you guys... My head is too full and can't search everywhere on the net for a bit of info... Thanks

If you liked your Epson, stick with them. The HC720 is no slouch and you should like what you see.

For your info I'm located in Montreal so won't be such a deal to buy from USA.

About the Mitsu HC1500, it's doesn't seem good on shadow details

I've read some comments about the Optoma hd65. Raindows are that bad? I can't find a place in Montreal for a demo! I've seen the Ax200u and the Epson... but the HD65 looks great on paper!

Get a DLP. And this is coming from a Epson 720 owner. These projectors have convergence issues. They've sent me 3 new ones, and my latest is the best one yet, but still not perfect. There's a red push on the left side of the screen only noticable on scenes with a lot of white in it. For example a Hockey game.

Epson got a real problem with this... can't believe it! My Home Cinema 550 had the exact same trouble. I'll read the thread on HC720 to see how many people got this problem.

It is all about expectations and choices. Personally, I find most of the 720 projectors are good units. Panasonic, Epson, Mitsubishi, Infocus, etc. are all great projectors (relative to what satisfies your requirements).

As "eightninesuited" mentions, the Epson 720 is built like a tank, with decent components. Most of the folks on the forum receive decent units (we hear about problems only from people who know how to communicate through "forums" :D). I have received a couple of units myself, but overall I think it is a great price-performance buy (rebate, free-bulb, my performance expectation - all this can't be beat!). I think the problems arise due to lack of proper quality control, assembling, tuning things to spec, etc.

You will need to decide your course of action, if you buy it from the Epson store, they give you a 30-day no-questions-asked return (as long as you use the unit gently :D). I chose this option, and overall I think I am satified with the unit. If you prefer a unit with more lumens, and film like quality, a Panasonic would serve you better. But again, this is all relative (your perception of "film-like" may be different from mine :D).
