View Full Version : Canon HG10 Hardware heaven - Software misery

It seems that Canon and Corel/Ulead are directing me down a path of least resistance - to spend more money for software that I assume would actually work.

Corel/Ulead "GuideMenu" will not install either as part of the auto install or by the .exe on the cd.

The wizard was interrupted before GuideMenu could be completely installed.

Ulead MovieFactory 5.6 SE cannot import any DVD content without crashing. I used the Canon backup utility to get a scene to the hard drive on the PC. I then try to import using MovieFactory and get...

ImportDVDApp MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

This application does not seem eligible for any product patches or updates as it is oem.

You may have an SE/Suite version (OEM). Please see the information about patches and updates at www.corel.com/support

This url leads to no where. When I searched further, I found a support matrix that did not include 5.6 SE.

Last hope for MovieFactory, a clean reinstallation. I am not expecting much and am not happy to have to follow this complex set of instructions for an older version ...

MovieFactory Clean Remove (http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/prnt_adp.php?p_faqid=761251&p_created=1178207763&p_sid=Fz1jQ7-i)

Can anyone spare me a massive ache here? Do these apps actually work? Is it worth the effort trying to debug unsupported software? I would happily pay under $100 for something that would minimally (successfully) import from an HG10 (or read the backed up) folder contents) and play hd content on an athlon 3200 winxp machine.

Hey Nick, you actually don't need any software to transfer .mts files from the cam to your PC. Simply browse the mapped drive of the HG10, select, and copy to your preferred directory. The most significant problem with the provided software is it does not correctly reassemble spliced files during transfer. So if you shoot >17 minutes of HXP footage, the cam will split the file(s) due to a 2GB filesystem limitation which you then have to manually reassemble with the copy /b command; otherwise, you'll experience dropped audio and two dropped vid frames.

Because the software doesn't reassemble during transfer, there really is no reason to use it (unless you have to have the <datetimestamp>.m2ts format.

For your AVC decoder, I'd suggest choosing the CoreAVC Pro or Elecard product. Both of these software packages are very highly regarded. If you're looking to do any significant editing, you can't beat using a real, commercial NLE like Vegas (Pro), Edius, Avid (Pinnacle), etc. You can download trial versions of most of these NLE's. Just try them out and see which one you prefer.

If your PC is not up to the task of editing AVCHD footage, you can convert to an intermediate file for editing and then render out to whatever format you need from any NLE, not just ones that edit AVCHD footage. Personally, I use Cineform's NEO HDV both to boost editing performance and to remove 3:2 pulldown since I'm shooting mostly 24P with the HG10. It's a great product that is quickly becoming the industry standard. Vegas Pro even includes Cineform's codec for free (although that version won't remove pulldown for these consumer cams). If you're shooting strictly 60i, then that's a $250 piece of software Sony is giving you for free. Something to think about...

Seems the problem with the bundled software is that it (any of the apps ) amazingly don't run on an athlon xp based system. Mines an xp 3200.

I just plunked down $99 for Ulead VideoStudio, like a fool. Somehow I thought the hg10 file format would be readable by videostudio, using the videostudio HD power pack, which adds support for the AVCHD format.

Not even close. On the camcorderinfo board, I just found this:

First of all, as of today, October 25, 2007, as far as I know, there is only one program that recognizes the Canon AVCHD file format, the files that are created by the HG10 that end with M2TS or MTS, and that program is Ulead MovieFactory 5.6 SE that comes on the Ulead CD with the camcorder.

Do you know something different about this Canon file system?

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 11 is what I use and it works great once you figure out how to use it correctly. I use an HG10 and edit on a Centrino Duo laptop. It's a little slow, but it works

Obviously, that is dated information, LOL. Most NLE's will edit AVCHD footage, regardless of which cam shot it. Like I said, I'm editing HG10 footage in Vegas Pro 8.0b build 217 with no probs whatsoever. Also, like I said earlier, if you immediately convert out of the AVCHD format to an intermediate, which I strongly encourage you to do, then any NLE will edit because you're no longer editing AVCHD footage. You're simply using the AVCHD format for acquisition.

Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus is supposed to handle AVCHD, and it has a "proxy" mode that allows it to work better on slower machines. I am considering this one because I have an Athlon XP machine. It's also fairly inexpensive compared to Vegas Pro. I haven't seen any other editors that have an equivalent to the proxy mode.

I found this site while looking for a solution to my problem with Ulead DVD Factory 5.6SE. I also have a Canon HG10 but have not been able to burn a single DVD since the program that was included does not work. I can open it, transfer files, etc., but when I click "Next" to move to step 3 and actually burn a DVD the program locks up tight. So tight that I cannot close the program even if I use Task Manager. Wierdly, when I open Task Manager, Movie Factory is listed twice. I have tried to close one at a time and both at the same time but nothing works. My only option is to manually shut down my PC using the power button. I would be happy to just buy a program for burning (right now I don't need to burn AVCHD DVD's since I have nothing to play them on). I have read some of the suggestions above but most of it is over my head, including the suggestion to convert out of the AVCHD format. This is my first camcorder that I bought to take videos of the new baby. I have a fairly high end PC (Dell XPS 720) so I would not think that would be the problem. What is the simplest solution for a video neophyte.

The simplest would probably be to pick up a Canon DW-100. Check Canon's site for more info on that product. If you want to walk down the NLE path, then just download some trial versions and see which one you like.

Wow hubsm, checking out those specs on a Dell XPS 720 its kind of shocking that it would lock up when trying to burn a DVD. It must be has to be a software issue. I hear that the latest Nero works real well. Man avchd is a real hassle right now. Your in a good forum read all the Canon HG10 threads I know u can work this out with that XPS

Sorry to ask this, but I had to reformat my computer and I've lost my Corel Application Disc. Would anyone mind uploading the cd contents online so I can download them? Or maybe just emailing them to me instead. All I really need is the GuideMenu program on the CD. I've tried calling both Corel and Canon, but neither of them can help me. Help! I'm desperate!

I also posted this message on the general HG10 thread. I hope that's not considered spam... =P

I have the exact same problem going on now (and it's why I just joined the forums). I also have a Dell XPS, and my symptoms are exactly the same as yours. Were you ever able to find a solution?

TIA,

Software I have found that works great with the HG10 and AVCHD
Pinnacle 11 Ultimate and now version 12 (Best low price choice available)Lots of editing features and transitions, easy to use....
Nero 8 (limited editing options but still very stable)
Vegas 8 - very expensive( New HD menu and bluray options coming in update this summer) Only for the hardcore user such as myself...

Hi, I've lost the Corel Application Disc for my Canon HG10. Can someone upload contents?

And/or can you let me know what is a good software (to give me good HD quality) that I can purchase?

Apparently both Canon and Corel don't provide the HG10 software anymore (I tried calling both) :(

It can use the MTS files directly without any conversion. Here is a link to one I posted last Spring. PowerDirector can output the movie in several different formats. I prefer to keep the output in MTS or M2TS and Motionbox.com accept uploads in those formats. Of course it converts them to Flash for viewing on their web site but they still look pretty clean because Motionbox doesn't compress as much as some of the other hosting sites such as Vimeo.
