Who knows the answer to this question? Does the HC9 and the earlier models in its series, have a standard HDMI output jack or does this go through a proprietary module that has to be purchased separately? Sony's still cameras that have HDMI outputs, need to have a special $40. connector, that isn't furnished with the cameras.

Steve, the HC9 uses a mini HDMI port that is inconveniently located under the battery! This means you must remove the battery and attach the cam to an auxiliary power pack for playback on your HDTV. Not very convenient.

I'm also finding the picture of the Sony SR12 to be significantly better than the SD9.

You can get a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable from monoprice.com for about $7. I bought one and it works great.
