View Full Version : How do I make a room into a 100% batcave without using 100% cotton velvet? reio-ta 03-08-08, 03:04 AM . William 03-08-08, 08:10 AM No such thing as 100% but you can get 99.9%. (http://www.greentechforum.net/category/news/2008/01/22/carbon-nanotubes-create-blackest-material-on-earth/) :) krasmuzik 03-08-08, 02:41 PM What is wrong with the black FR701 from Guilford? It is a coarse polyster weave - no sheen - like burlap without the flammibility. And you can tell by the fabric name it has all the acoustic fabric ratings so you don't have to worry about anything. When you are talking about optimizing ANSI room contrast - even a mid gray or dark neutral color will work. A mid gray paint would reflect 18% - times that by three walls to bounce off around the room before getting back to the screen and you are at 0.5%. A good fabric weave soaks up even more than paint. Prometheusbound 03-08-08, 11:40 PM I ended up with the black cotton velvet. After all the looking I did it suited my taste the best. I did all the sewing myself! The velvet was a little more but when you buy in bulk you can work out a discount. I got 40% knocked off. dangc 03-09-08, 01:38 AM I am trying to figure out what I want to use too. Anybody using black felt? DennisLJacob 03-10-08, 12:49 AM where did you get your black velvet? and what sort of price? dangc 03-10-08, 12:58 AM Felt isn't a good choice. It's not as saturated black as velvet. It's not very durable, it falls apart after a while. My grandmother was a pre-school teacher. The stuff fades and becomes thin. Thanks, that is good to know. I could see how it would not be very durable. dangc 03-10-08, 02:51 AM I hadn't come across this stuff yet. Thanks for the tip! I may go with this! This is some good stuff. Totally blackout and no sheen. Cheap too. If you order over 50 yards, you get it for $4.05 per yard. http://www.rosebrand.com/product271/Duvetyn-Black-FR.aspx?tid=2&info=duvetyne Duvetetyn is very durable. My only complaint is it usually isn't fire resistant. But this stuff is! Prometheusbound 03-10-08, 11:58 AM I actually bought it mail order through Joann Fabrics. It was $18.00 / yard. The fringe I bought at Walmart for $2.00 a yard. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3615&PRODID=prd52781&source=search kevivoe 03-10-08, 12:42 PM The best yet. http://www.fpi-protostar.com/flock.htm BIGmouthinDC 03-10-08, 01:06 PM Black GOM around screen and over the top: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC01006.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC01010.jpg some construction details here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=837848 Tryg 03-10-08, 02:00 PM Trunk liner is about as good as it gets for soaking up light. It's like heavy porous felt. It can be very inexpensive in bulk. Tryg 03-10-08, 05:22 PM I'd google "felt trunk liner". you should get all types and grades. even sticky back. I saw this http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/felt-fabric/rainbow-felt/rainbow-felt-black-felt-.htm I buy huge rolls of the stuff at a local upholstery warehouse for $5 yard 72" or 60" inches wide and up to 1/4 inches thicknesses.
