View Full Version : Army of Two won't fill the entire screen on my Kuro! Help!

Just got Army of Two for PS3. Hooked up to my 50" 720p Kuro via HDMI, the game won't fill the entire screen - it leaves a 1-2inch border around the screen. This is pretty annoying, but it's also a big deal because I'm playing on a plasma and don't want uneven wear.

I've played around with settings on the TV, PS3, and game - nothing works! None of my other PS3 games have this problem.

Can people post up and tell me if they have the same problem with this game on their HDTVs? If most don't have the problem, is it possible that my game disc is bad? If you've got a Kuro and this game, especially, please post!

Sounds like they added underscan to the game to get a bit more preformance out of it. There probably isn't much you can do.

Thanks for the reply. Is this typical of some games? None of my other PS3 games have this problem, so I'm just really surprised that this game would be like this. I keep hoping that it's just a bad disc...

Anyone else have any first-hand experience with Army of Two on their HDTV?

It is common with Wii third party games and most PS2/cube games, but this is the first I have heard of this on an HD system. I call laziness on the Dev's part for this one. (I don't think that the 360 version has this problem, the Dev was just lazy and took the easy way out to get it running on the PS3.

Geez, that really sucks. I'm surprised that this issue hasn't really caused much of a stir.

I'd love to hear if anyone has some first-hand experience with this game on their HDTV (borders or no borders).

If the PS3 version has this problem and the Xbox version doesn't, I'm going to swap for the Xbox version - those borders are really annoying!

You could rent the 360 version and check it for yourself.

There are a few pics in the 360 pic thread, and it fills the screen. Ign reviewed it and said there were no differences visually, I guessing they didn't actually play it, like usual.

Or played it on a display that has a lot of overscan. Most review sites don't have the latest and greatest displays to review games on.

i have it for the PS3 and on my SONY KDL-40V3000 there are no black boarders. what you're experiencing has to be due to a setting somewhere. i played a bit with the screen settings on my tv and they are all correct (Full pixel, normal display area, etc.). same with PS3. look through all your screen/video option settings.

I assumed it had to do with settings as well, but...

1) All my other PS3 games (and the XMB) display perfectly (without borders)

2) Even after playing around with the settings, the only one that fills the screen is Zoom, which obviously looks bad and isn't usable.

i'm thinking pendrag0on hit the nail on the head. after looking into this a bit i think the answer is that game devs assume all tv's will overscan the image. i *believe* your tv is displaying the image properly and mine is automoatically stretching the image to account for this? someone correct me if i'm wrong cause i would really like to have a better understanding of this.

Know knows, searching around and I'm not finding anything. The PS3 Ign review is just the 360 one copy and pasted with a few changes(sixaxis), and all of the screenshots in the 360 thread, on Kuros no less have it displaying full screen, with no complaints of stretching. Could be a problem on his end too.

Was just throwing it out there since there is some shots in another thread for him to compare to.

Also why would they assume all TVs would overscan the image, but no other developer would? That makes zero sense, especially since Overscan isn't a problem for most people.

There are "TV" settings in the options menu. In addition to the differences seeming to change some of the brightness, I have read that it changes the size of the image as well. I have the model before yours, turbo, and am not having any issues that I have noticed. Connected via HDMI. If I remember right, "Natural" was one of the settings someone said to try to alleviate the borders.

Not even on my 37w3... Fill does not work ok... I see boarders around about 1" thick. The game was created with Over Scan In mind, and my Westy is a 1:1 Pixel screen.

P.S I will try other modes within the game. I'm supprised the game does not feature any settings.

This is not the only game that underscans by default. On default settings, I had a small black border on my Sony KDS-50A2000 when playing MLB 08. Luckily, the AV settings in the game enable the image to be stretched and moved, allowing the black border to be eliminated.

Warhawk does the same thing on my 1130. It can easily be adjusted out through the settings menu in-game.

Which is why i am surprised that this one does not...

Thanks for all the replies guys. I took my disc back and got a replacement - that didn't fix things at all, same border around the screen.

I've tried toggling every possible setting on the TV, the PS3 and the game with no success.

I feel like I might have one last chance to fix this - I'd like to get my PS3 to output 1080i/p to the Kuro and then hopefully the image will fill the entire screen. I've tried de-selecting 720p from the display settings on the PS3 (and leaving 1080i and p checked) and starting up the game, but that causes the game to default to 480p. Do you guys know of anyway to force the PS3 to output 1080i/p and not default down to 480p.

Obviously, the Kuro can accept 1080i/p signal, but for some reason the PS3 chooses 480p instead. I can't de-select 480p from the display menu of the PS3 (it's greyed out). Is there some combination of settings on the TV and the PS3 that will get this to work?

Thanks for all the help guys - much appreciated.

Well i believe Army of Two only displays in 720p, and it doesn't have 1080i scaling programed, so with that game it'd be impossible to force 1080. I may be wrong, but i think i read somewhere it doesn't scale.

I've played a few games that have the boarder. Rockband for one seems to have the same underscaling problem. You may be able to have less of a noticable difference either by using zoom funtions of the display or some displays of the option of turning cropping on/off and on ussually clips the boarders of the image that's displayed (so you'll get a kind of zoomed effect).
