I have a Mits HC-1500. Today the electricity to the house cut off due to weather and then came back on within 10 seconds. I noticed when the power to the house came back on my projector turned on. I have it running thru a surge protector and wondered if this could cause the problem. I am afraid if I'm out of town and power cuts off and on to the house the projector might boot up and run the whole time I'm gone. Can anyone tell me why my projector may have done this. Do i need to take it out of the surge protector and run it straight to the wall outlet? What I'm trying to say is what could cause my projector to turn on when the power to the house cuts off and on like this?? Please help. Thanks

Get a UPS.

Line Interactive
Good for brown-outs and black-outs
700VA or more

A surge suppressor won't help when the power cuts.

APC and Tripplite are reputable brands to look at although they are not the only ones. I use a 1200va unit from APC that cost me about $130. The reason you want to get one with the VA so high is that the watts available are not as high as the VA, usually 60 to 80%, and startup draw from the PJ will require 2 to 3 times the total watts rating of the PJ for the battery to support it properly.

You can usually find something under $100 at a local store and maybe less online but the shipping can be higher due to weight.

By the way to help me further decide what size I need. What all components do you have on your 1200va from APC

I have an "InFocus" that does the same thing. Since it is mounted on the ceiling, it is not convenient to turn off the AC switch. Plus they recommend you turn off power with the remote control, so the fan can continue to run to cool it off. Later, if a power interruption happens, the projector comes on, using up the available lamp life. It is a design flaw. My solution is to remember to unplug it after the lamp cools off. A surge suppressor won't help, as recon said. One idea is to plug it into a timer. You set the timer for, say three hours of viewing time. After you finish viewing, you turn the projector off with the remote control, then a little later the timer cuts off removing all AC power until you set it again. A UPS may solve the problem... it depends on how long the power is off. UPSs only last an hour or so, depending on their size.

look at settings on your HC-1500 there could be a way to keep it off after powers out

Yep. that's the best bet. I keep my projector on shutdown at 15min. That way, you know if it ever turns on, it'll go off again.

thats a good idea, I might just look at the settings to see about it shutdown in 15min. or as Ron says just unplug it after use.

I have only my PJ on the 1200va. I have my sat receiver and sound system on a separate 1000va unit.

Even if you set your PJ to turn off automatically after 15 minutes, the real problem is the restriking of your lamp immediately after it shutoff. This can blow a lamp early. If you are not using the PJ, its easy to just unplug it to prevent an unwanted startup but what if it is running when your power blinks off and back on?

I don't risk it regardless of low percentage of happening.

I've had it happen twice since I went to my setup and continued watching for a couple minutes one time with the power off.

My Infocus 4805 did the same thing and once ran for 24 hours because of a power outage while I was out of town.

I normally had unplugged it when I knew I would be away for a period of time, but forgot to that one time.

Another option is a battery backup surge protector.
