My trusty Oppo player has died. Coax audio output is dead and I can't run the descrete outputs from the back of theater to the front.
I have a PLV-70 PJ with DVI input. Can I pick up any DVD player with HDMI output and get some sort of converter plug to go HDMI to DVI?
Recommendations?
Thanks,
Gordon

Yes. Monoprice is a good place to start.

Thanks for the quick replay, Cal!
Monoprice has a great selection of adapters! A quick google search showed them to be pretty common, so maybe Radio Shack would have them too. I did not realize DVI and HDMI were so compatable that a simple/inexpensive adapter plug was all I needed. All new players seem to be HDMI and I've been "out of the loop" a bit since my original install. In the interest of expedience (to see a movie tonight), I'll just grab a player from Costco and an adapter from ratshack (if they have 'em) and should be back in business!
Appreciate it.

Does the DVI port on your projector support HDCP? If it doesn't, the DVD player won't pass the video to your projector.

Uh-Oh..... I don't think so. I REALLY don't want to go back to component. :(

What are my options? I found an Oppo OPDV971H on Ebay. Are there any current models out there that output DVI and will play nice with my non-HDCP projector?
Thanks,
Gordon

if u end up being able to use hdmi-dvi, try a one piece hdmi-dvd adapter cable; a one piece reduces the possibility of connectivity problems u may encounter with 2 pieces, ie hdmi cable AND a dvi adapter.

There is a firmware hack which removes HDCP from the Oppo 981: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=832356
It was originally intended to allow component upscaling on the 970, but it removes HDCP from the HDMI ports on the 970 and 981 as well. The hack does not work for either purpose on the 980.

Another Oppo 970HD or hacked 981HD will do you just fine. Of course, HTPC is also another good option. HDCP stripper is also available. BD/HDDVD will need HDCP unfortunately unless you strip HDCP from HDMI/DVI. If you want to chance it, look for Bravo D1, Momitsu v888, Avel Linkplayer, Buffalo, Zensonic, or Helios.

Bill,
That hack looks amazing! Thanks for the link, but since the method and terms used are mostly over my head, I'll probably just try to get another player that has non HDCP DVI output. I have a very low tolerance for software frustrations.
Huey - thanks for the suggestions.
