Why would you send a 480p signal to a 720p projector on purpose? The Mits has a decent scaler, but nothing spectacular.

Because the Oppo do not upscale via component out. ( I do not have HDMI cable yet). Also I was trying to make a "fair" comparison (the sp4805 is connected via s-video 480i, the HC1500 is ceiling mounted and It will be to much trouble to remove it and mount the sp4805 so it can be connected via component out.

It is the same as buying a Sanyo Z2000 and send a 480p signal instead of 1080p.

If you want to compare, need to send 720p signal.

You cant do a "fair" comparisson with two differant projector! The only way you can compare these is to feed them their native signals and show which one looks better. Repost new pics after you get your hdmi ,,other wise try getting a vga cable and playing 720p movies to hc1500...

However, your pictures would be beneficial for me if I can compare your best performance from 4805 vs. the best performance from HC1500 :D :D

I understand the limitations, but I thought that things like color, brightness, and contrast shouldn’t change much setting the oppo from 480p to 720p, right..?. I guess I can expect a improvement in sharpness, but that will be difficult to show with pictures anyway. Also I believe that most people that are upgrading from a 480p to 720p can expect a improvement in sharpness (especially with hidef sources) but it is difficult to know how others factors like standard def. sources (DVD) and color, black level and contrast, will this new "inexpensive 720p" projectors will perform…, at least that was how I felt, after all DVD is still a very important source for movies.(I guess). So with this comparison, you can expect a improvement in areas like color and brightness with the 4805 and sharpness with the hc1500, and even so the sp4805 does not look bad at all. (By the way I own both projector, I upgraded from the SP4805 to hc1500) and just thought that if some one is in the “same boat” and is expecting a dramatic difference between this two projectors (at least with DVD’s,) this pictures may help.

Mardelgo I upgraded from an InFocus IN72 (the 4805's son) to the HC1500 and I noticed what I expected to notice...

Roughly the same contrast and shadow detail.
More brightness with the HC1500 (900 vs 1600, that's easy)

And the biggest of them all, I don't care if it's SD, HD, Blu Pu, or whatever...

Sharpness. Resolution. Clarity. Detail. SDE.

All of those are improved upon with 720p, sitting 10' back from a 100" screen (previously 11' from a 92" with 480p and massive SDE).

SDE is the #1 annoyance I have with projectors, then black levels.

The IN72 had great black levels (for it's price) but the 480p SDE was annoying from day 1.

480p signal to both. Looks the same.

You are using a S video connection to the Sp4805 while the HC1500 is using component !!??

and the 4805 has 2200 hours on it VS 150 on the Hc1500.

If this is true the Hc1500 has nothing on the Older 4805 when it comes to PQ performance.

cheers

BMCreider, I am thinking of selling my IN72 in order to upgrade to a HC1500 and I was wondering...

1) How do the black levels in the Mitsubishi compare to those of the InFocus?

2) Some reviewers in Amazon say that the HC1500 is does not scale 480i sources well, so it seems you really need an upscaling player if you want to watch regular DVDs on this unit... What is your experience?

SDE (Screen Door Effect) is the reason why I want to upgrade... it distracts me while watching Star Wars.

That's correct. I did this comparison with my HD1000 over a year ago. The HD1000 essentially matches the 4805 in PQ while offering 720p resolution. At the time that was a great deal as many 720p projectors struggled to match the 4805 in color accuracy, brightness, etc...

Black level was slightly higher on the HD1000, although the 1000 was overall quite a bit brighter than the 4805 due to the aging bulb in the 4805 (had a few hundred hours on it, less than 1000). So some, maybe all, of the higher black level was likely due to the brighter bulb. The 1000 does have a white segment in the color wheel, so it's likely it can never quite match the 4805 though.
