1080P listed under the high definition category and 480i listed under the standard definition category on the back of the HD DVD that aren't combo discs? For example, I decided to buy Pan's Labyrinth on HD DVD since it was 30% off at BB along with having a coupon for another $5 off. Anyway I notice on the back that it had the 1080p under high def. and 480i under standard def. I'm not understanding this since it is a HD DVD only and can only played on HD DVD players so how could it be 480i for standard def????

I noticed other HD DVD ONLY titles listed this way as well. I could understand it if they were combo HD DVD players with both high and standard def. on the DVD. I can't believe I'm asking this question at this point but what the heck.......would like to know more out of curiousity.

Okay.........so that's the only reason they list 480i under standard definition is due to all the extra material on the disc being in 480i while the movie is in 1080p..........makes sense. I'm glad this is all it is. I guess some are upset the extra material isn't in 1080p either but not me. I care more that they do the best job possible with the high def. transfer for watching the movie in the best HD experience possible.

Good to know............thanks

well for the sake of accuracy unless you are watching a movie shot in 1.78:1 aspect ratio, the movie you watch will never appear in 1080p. In the case of movies released on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and shot with 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 aspect ratio (the majority), you will at best get 818p or 1920x818p to be precise.
